I have a T reg golf STDi 90BHP which has developed an engine cut out. It first manifested itself as a mild engine/revving vibration just on the point of coming to a standstill whilst decelerating - once the car is stationary the engine idles ok. This vibration seems worse when the engine is warm. I have had ECU electronically checked and it shows no fault codes. Fuel filter also changed. During the last couple of weeks the engine has just cut out about 5 times when driving. The revs suddenly drop and the engine cuts out. Upon restarting the ignition the engine fires again OK.
I have had acouple of local garages take a look and both say it is a problem with the fuel system.
Sometimes the car runs like a dream and other times it feels really lumpy with no power. Any ideas gratefully received Read more
Three petrol cars in the family.
1. Subaru Forester XT - does about 10,000 miles a year of mixed driving.
2. Subaru Forester (old shape) - does about 6,000 miles a year of mainly suburban driving, but some motorway work.
3. Suzuki Wagon R+ - does about 4,000 miles per year of suburban driving.
So, the Subarus have black exhausts. The XT (Turbo) has a load of soot on the inside and dribbling over the edge. The other is not so different, and they have both beenon 260 mile round trips to Wales this weekend with at least 200 miles on fast straight roads.
The Suzuki exhaust looks like it has just been replaced by a new tail pipe - its spotless. Whats going on? Is this the sympton of another problem which also causes poor economy and what can I do about it. BTW the older Subaru passes the MoT without fail. New one too new.

The whitey colour was lead dioxide from leaded petrol. Hence you no longer get that.
The black is just the soot emissions from the engine condensing on the side of the tailpipe. A low emission engine still produces a reasonable amount of soot (carbon) when burning. It's simply because while our combustion is currently good, swirl isn't always perfect so at less than maximum efficiency and reasonable gas flow speed you get some incomplete combustion resulting in the soot.
A quick question:
If a set of ignition leads with a specified resistance of 5K Ohms, all increase to 6K Ohms would this be enough to stop the engine starting when cold, but perhaps keep a hot engine running?
Thanks in advance

Just for information. The resistance of carbon leads depends on the car and the make of leads. a Pug 106 has 1.2 to 1.5 per 300mm ( ft ) and of course the resistance of the lead is proportional to it's length. Regards Peter
Deos anyone have any experience of or knowledge of either the AXR Crossbone (www.axrdistribution.com)or the luxury (!) Carbone version? I seem to remember reading a test review in one of the UK papers on the Crossbone which slated it for having scarcely any suspension and being pointless but I can't find the report online. The UK importer mentioned on the French website doesn't have anything on AXRs on its website.

Drink-driver, 14, flies into rage after sentencing
A 14-year-old drink-driver punched a prosecutor and threw a jug of water at magistrates as she was jailed.
Leanne Black, of Thatcham, Berkshire, flew into a rage at Newbury Youth Court after being told she faced four months behind bars for driving offences.
Before the drama, the court took the unusual step of saying Leanne could be named due to public interest.
When she was 12, she is thought to have become Britain's youngest drink-driver, and was disqualified for two years.

I think this subject has run it's course.
Most people have had their say and voiced an opinion - most of which is more related to parenting and discipline rather than motoring itself.
Also, the people concerned have already had their 15 minutes of fame elsewhere in the tabloids, etc...

Does anyone have any recommendations on "any driver over 21" 17-seater minibus insurance.
Our church bus cover is up for renewal, and the premium has shot up by 70%...

Quick question. If I buy a car which does not have any tax but has an MOT and I have insured it, whats the legal position on driving the thing home?
Obviously in a perfect situation I would tax it straight away, but as you now have to have an MOT and insurance documents with you in order to buy a tax disc, this isn't always possible. (Insurance documents need to be sent from the insurance company).
Any ideas?

Book it in for an M.O.T. at a testing station near your home and drive it there bonus if it passes full MOT still cheap enough to get it home if it fails and legal...cheers...Keo
Being a non-tech head, just a question I'm sure someone can answer for me. Is it possible to fit a 2.0 Peugeot cylinder head onto a 1.8 bottom end or must it be a 1.8 head also? Apologies if it is a daft question. TIA Read more
Put the question on www.bba-reman.com/forums/ and Cyril will be along shortly and answer your question. Regards Peter
Hello - I'd really welcome some opinions on my 'next car dilemma'. For the first time in my life I have a bit of cash and I'm looking to replace our current car - a SEAT Cordoba 1.8 GLX.
Budget is up to £6k. I want something reasonably fast which seats wife + 2 kids comfortably and has decent luggage space. Would love a few luxury extras, primarily leather seats! We only do about 8k miles/year, 3k around town the rest touring/social. Looking for a car that we will keep for 5 or 6 years so long term cost/reliability is a concern.
We've been really happy with current car and my head says get another SEAT. Either a Leon or Toledo, probably 1.9 diesel, with as low mileage as possible and drive it until it starts to get 'tired' like our current car has..
My heart though would love an Alfa - 156 saloon or sportwagon.
Any views on the pros and cons - and suggestions for other cars (quite like the Saab 9-3 but reliability issues put me off) would be very welcome.
cheers Read more
How old are the children? There is not much room in the back of the Alfa unless they are still small.
I reckon if you drive the Alfa, you will fall in love with it. They are getting better, the only real problem now are the dealers. If you can find a good independant dealer and the car is out of warranty, you will be able to run it cheaper than you think.
Last thing, if you buy an Alfa and it has alloys, replace the locking wheel nuts. Mine got seized on and took hours and several broken tools to remove.
Today I went to look at a 99/T Mondeo 1.8td glx estate with 103k at a small 2nd hand dealer. The car has had 2 owners, has a full-ish service history up to 87.5k and then nothing after that...am i right to be concerned about this as i thought these older diesels need regular (6k miles) servicing. Obviously the dealer is offering to do a service before it is sold and it also needs a new (re-con) alternator which will be done.
The sticker price is £1995 which I said was a little dear compared to what parkers guide says...£1995 for the same car with 60k miles.
So here are my questions....
1 - What price should I try to haggle for? He's shown signs of giving me a year warranty with lloyds but thats it.
2 - Is the service gap a worry?
3 - When I asked for the last owners phone number he said he didn't have them. Is this correct or is he hiding something from me?
I'd quite like to speak with the previous owner to discuss the servicing gap.
4 - Any minor/major problems with mondeo's of this age?
This will be the first car I've bought and I want to make sure I've covered everything.
Thanks in advance for any advice. Read more
Pour scorn an ridicule if you like but the Mondeo TD of this vintage is quite a relaxed and capable cruiser on a motorway around 70,80 mph.
I know this 'cos I used to own one.

Garage has diagnosed a worn dual mass fly wheel - he says that Bosch issued a warning about premature wear of this component? Does anyone have experience of this or know if it was covered by a VW recall. My car has done 68k. How much does it cost to have this fixed. Only had the car three months should I go back to the dealer? Ta
