Hi all,
First time poster, long time reader!! I just wanted to share a recent experience I have had with getting a trade-in price for my Seat Leon, and ask some questions. Its 6 years old, and in decent shape - needs a bit of work, but nothing major. Went to a local VW dealer (I was looking at a 2.0 GT TD) who offered me £3500 for my car. Laughingly all they'd offered me was 6 months road tax and a mat set - mines still got 8 months road tax on it so I'd lose out there as well. I had checked Glass's, Parkers, and What Car, all of which had it around the £4500 - $4800 mark.
When I mentioned this to the salesperson, they stated that Glass's valuations were a joke, and they were quoting retail value rather than trade-in values
Out of interest, I went to a SEAT dealership who said they would offer around £5000 for it, give or take the negotiating on the cost to change and stuff - I told him what VW had offered, and he nearly fell off his chair!!
Anyways, I wanted to ask the question about how accurate are tools like Glass's, Parkers, etc. and why are VW so way out? Also how do you deal with a salesperson that just won't budge on the cost to change? Read more
Although the Seat and VW are closely related, your always going to get less if your swapping franchises. Most dealers sell very few non-franchise cars.
In your case, it could be the VW and Seat dealers have different policies - the VW may send all 5 yr+ cars to auction, whereas the Seat dealer might be quite happy to try to retail a 6 yr old car, especially one that's a Seat.
I wonder what the auction price of your car is - a 6 year old Lean, that 'needs a bit of work' doesn't sound like it's going to worth a lot? The VW dealers offer sounds pretty good for an auction price, and they don't make much on the cars to enable them to close the gap.
A different VW dealer may well have different policies and be prepared to retail your car so you may get a better offer.
Does anyone have one of these living near to you please? I am seeking a picture of the " Pink " decal, which was found on the sides and tailgate of this Limited Edition. This is no longer available from Fiat and most of the remaining " Pinks " have lost theirs over the years but there must be one somewhere on which at least one of the decals has survived.
Any leads much appreciated. Thank you. Read more
I realise this message is more than a year old but couldn't not write. I actually own a pink fiat panda. Mine also still has the white lines and pink written on the sides.
Been trying to get my sister to have her car serviced, its never had anything done to it since she purchased it about 4 years ago.
Just checked under the bonnet and found the brake fluid bottle almost totally empty, she has just brought some DOT4 from Halfords, assume its the right stuff.
Anyway, I am trying to allow her to let me service it, any issues with oil filter access or the drain plug in Punto's? Do I need any fancy tools, we have star and hex bits..
Any discount OEM suppliers on the NET? I need to do coolant, oil, plugs, leads and air filter. Its very low milage but as I've said, never been touched.
Cheers,

>>Heavier vehicles will always appear more damaged when hitting an immovable object due to their having to absorb massively more momentum within their own structure.
If the heavier vehicle were just as structurally efficient as the lighter, the damage would be comparable. In fact, you could view intrusion after an impact as a rough measure of the ratio beween the vehicles mass, and its structural efficiency in that direction or type of impact.
If, however, the heavier vehicle didn't use the extra material to provide the required extra structural stiffness (or beyond yield, more structural strength), the heavier vehicle would be damaged more.

Hi All
My brother has a cambelt gone on his 1.9tdi. Has this damaged the engine or is there sufficent clearence between pistons and valves?
Hope you can help, he's tearing his hair out over this.

Apparently the car is an Octavia Ambient 1.9 TDi first registered
May 2002.
That'll be a 90bhp non PD then.
the cambelt tensioner on my '00 110bhp TDI broke and the belt jumped a few teeth. Once repaired, it sounded like a bag of spanners and then the garage where i got it fixed went bump, so i got rid.
I was warned that on the bottom pulley there were three possible settings (?) for the cam belt and so it may have needed have tweaking. I would have had it tweaked if the garage stayed solvent!
Anyway, I really don't know whether or not the car would have been ok once tweaked, but it did work, after a fashion. Performance was dire, it stalled easily but economy was unaffected. Wierd.
It must be back in the 1980's that Japanese manufacturers introduced 3 year warranties. Since then, nothing much seems to have moved on. I think Hyundai now give a 5 year warranty but I wonder if thats a marketing thing, as they try to increase market share, rather than a permanent global commitment by Hyundai.
European manufacturers have, grudgingly I think, brought in longer warranties. I think that the EU may have forced them to do so. On the technical matters thread, there are never ending tales of woe about things that really shouldn't break imho.
Isn't it time warranties, on certain components at least, were essentially lifetime. Particularly things that have no moving parts. I'm thinking of things like ECU's, sensors, & connectors. What do backroomers think ? Read more
IIRC Nissan and Hyundai in the US offer 10years (used to something like 5 years bumper to bumper and then the remianing 5 years on powertrain).
By law, all emission control systems on US-market cars must be warranted 8 years or 100k miles (i.e. covers cat, oxygen sensors, engine sensors, ECU etc).

Well... from the spec given above, I'd suggest you'd be looking for a light that might be on for about a quarter of a second...
If you're really determined you want to see this magnificent display of riotous colour, have a look in the handbook for where the light actually is, then stare there while you start it! It'll either work, which is good, or it won't, which is ... well, not exactly bad, is it? Because the car is still starting perfectly, so if anything really is wrong it looks like it's the bulb...!
Anyway - relax, its a Peugeot- so the likelihood is there'll be a real fault along in a minute!
