Mods: Feel free to bury this post in the Computer or Speed Camera threads if you wish.

A few days ago my peacefully slumbering missus sitting in the tranquil environment of our V70 was rudely awakened by the vrrrrr vrrrrr vrrrrr (imagine a dive dive dive claxon for a submarine!) that I had set as my speed camera alert. Suitably chastened (I jumped too!) I promised to find something a little more subtle.

Browsing my XP professional laptop for inspiration I happened across folder C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\Media in which I found file cashreg.wav

Yes, "CHING"; a cash register. Most appropriate I thought and it's now copied to the PDA and used by the CheckPOInt speed camera plugin for TomTom 5.1!

For those of you not familiar with CheckPOInt, visit checkpoint.oabsoftware.nl/ Read more

Oh, there's more... (Mods feel free to combine this and the last two post in to one! ;-)

Checkpoint features also include

> Being able to choose the encompassed angle of approach in which cameras are warned about
> Where the speed limit is known by the application (pretty often since cameras are categorized by speed limit not just by Gatso / SPECs or whatever) then it is also possible to set a "speed limit is being broken" reminder
> Now a neat touch; having triggered the first one, SPECs cameras are shown as distance to run to the next one, the speed limit in force, and your average speed so far to help you drop back if necessary.

I *think* that's all.

As I said before, pretty good for a freebie.

For anyone with an ounce of technical knowledge, then a PDA with all this plus the fact that it is a PDA and can do all the things expected of a pocket computer is a far better bet than a "TomTom GO" and their "plug and play" ilk.

My brother's car has been written off and he needs to get new car. Looking at a diesel. Now, strangely, price is not too important (about 9k), as his friend works in a very large dealership and can basically get him "staff " discount or something along those lines. So whatever the deal is, it will be good.

He is looking at less than a year old cars and looking to keep for proabably at least 4 years. He has narrowed down to Focus, Mondeo (I am asking for trouble here aren't I?) and Astra. I have also suggested he look at Laguna.

Which Focus diesel is the best, which Astra and Mondeo diesel are the best? How does their running costs compare to each other? Will the Mondeo mpg be significantly more than the other 2? Probably does in excess of 20K a year so mpg will probably be the biggest cost factor.

Any advice would be appreciated. Read more

The focus had the same engine, the same toys but was
nowhere near as comfortable, had a huge turbo lag and didnt
handle any better.

No, they have very different engines, see my post above.

This is a follow-on to the thread regarding the tyres for my 911.

To recap, one rear tyre was original and getting a bit worn. The other tyre was half the age, however, having been fitted after a puncture. So I was concerned that was wasting much of the life of an expensive tyre.

The tyre fitters had an idea today - they have given me back my old half-worn tyre. The plan is that if I get another rear puncture (grrr...) when the rears have worn to about the same tread depth then I can re-use it.

I would appreciate some suggestions as to how to store the tyre. At the moment it is leaning against the (inside) garage wall. It can't stay there for ever. Over to the BR.....

I'm aware, btw, that once the tyre is 5 years old it is scrap and not safe to use. Advice as to how to determine its age would be appreciated. I know there are some numbers on the sidewall - which ones give me this?

TIA. Read more

>put tyre in bag.

If patently is going to throw his tyre away after 5 years following manufacture ANYWAY, then there's no need to try to prolong its life through careful storage... given that if he'd had it on the car for 5 years it would have been living in the wet/dry/cold/warm outdoor air.

Due to a recurrence of severe health problems I'm almost certain that I will have to give up driving. I bought a new Honda Accord in May that has now only done 3000 miles. I'd appreciate some comments about the possible best way of disposing of the car. Read more

In addition contact your local friendly garages.

When they recommend a car to someone, it's just as much about the current owner as it is the car.

Whilst you're here stick an ad in the HJ Classifieds with the description etc. Don't worry too much if you haven't decided a price yet. Someone here may be looking to save on the new price and then you can discuss.

Sorry to hear of your illness

Good luck

Question Cat damage
dubman

I am trying to ascertain the cause of damage to a 6 month old catalytic converter.
The car began running badly and was driven gently back to base - approx 1 mile. At which point it was revved very hard by a '3rd party'to try to drive it onto a ramp. Black smoke ensued at that point. The problem turned out to be HT leads, causing poor ignition. Is it likely that the cat damage occued as a result of the drive home or the high revving - which would have put far more unburnt fuel into the exaust and cat??

Look forward to some opinions! Read more

Wish I knew myself dubman..Mine failed and partially blocked at 30K on a Vectra diesel.
Took the main dealer days to find the reason for loss of power and management light on and it ultimately cost a fortune.
The Service manager asked me if it had been replaced before as it looked brand new externally.
Overfueling...engine oil...??

Help,I've just put about a litre of petrol in my diesel tank before realising what I had done. I stopped myself filling anymore and filled the remainder of the tank with about 45 litres of diesel.

Do I need to get the tank drained, as I've read the horror stories about filling diesel up with petrol, but I've only put a bit in.

It's a turbo diesel Zafira.
