If you listen to traffic reports on the radio, there seems to be a disproprtionate number of incidents in the area of J9-10 of the M40.
I travel up and down this stretch regularly and I'm forming a theory about it. Long queues on the on and off slips at J10 are the norm most of the day.
I think a lot of people are using the M1-A43 (recently upgraded)-M40-A34 as a kind of outer M25, linking the West and the South Coast to East Midlans, Yorkshire and the North East .
The danger is that wehn people joing the M40 at 10,going south they don't realise it's a short run to 9, where they are leaving again .There is a dedicated lane to exit at 9, and if you miss it it's very difficult to get into it before the exit ; hence the accidents , from people cutting in.
I reckon what could be done, includes better warnings at 10 to keep letf, or even widening to 4 lanes for about 2 miles before 9 Read more

A while ago I posted a question on this area of the M40 regarding the disporoportionate number of overturned HGVs at the A43 Junction. It has a horrendous layout with several adverse cambers. A single problem on this road layout effectively shuts both the A43 and M40 very quickly.

I have a 1997 1.8 Mondeo diesel that I bought not long ago. This is my first diesel car and I was wondering do you give it more revs inbetween gear changes, less, or is the same a petrol car?

I know it might sound a silly question to all you in the know out there, but I havent a scooby doo!!

Whilst I think you comment regarding 4th is true, I would prefer to be in second or third in a 30 mph limit only so that I'm in a more responsive gear (assuming I'm not at the 30 mph limit) for both accelerating and using 'acceleration' sense to help stop. If, for any reason, you needed a little speed to get out of any trouble, I'd rather have second gear than fourth!

Just my comments anyway.

I am unable to provide a link to the article, in today's Sunday Telegraph magazine; it is by Neil Lyndon and it is easily the most scathing and damning review I have ever read on a new car. Do try and get sight of it it and add your comments! It may be interesting to see how many they sell and what those that they do are worth in 1 and 3 years time. Read more

Loads of Rodius (Rodiae??) lined up at the Ssangyong garage in Bristol. They actually don't look too bad in black.

Lot of money though.

Reminds me of the joke going round the States at the moment.

A bloke stated that when he got home last night his wife demanded that she should should be taken out to an expensive establishment.

So he took her to a gas station....

I have a 2 and a half year old Clio 172 and need to get all the brake discs and pads changed.
I can either get the parts and do it myself or have other contacts that can do it for me fairly cheaply.

However, when I questioned my local dealer I was told that if the work was NOT carried out by an authorised Reanult dealer/garage I would VOID the ENTIRE warranty on the vehicle.

The car still has 6 months warranty, but the dealer wants to charge nearly £600 to the job where as I can source the parts myself for less than £200 and get them fitted for no more than an extra £100.

Can the dealer/renault leagally void a warranty in this way?
I can understand if they said the brakes were no longer covered.
Surely, brakes, as a consumable should be exempt and I should be able to get them changed where and when I require it?

On this line getting tyres changed would also void a warranty?!
The exhaust will also need changing shortly too!!

>>The law you are all refering to is the removal of block exemption.>>

That is made clear by the link I posted last night.

Unfortunately, when the thread was active, the words "block exemption" were unbeknown to us - I came across it quite by chance looking for something else.

suggest checking the metal rods that operate the door locks, these were quite lose on a previous car of mine and tapped on the metal of the door whilst driving.

All this fuss about fuel costs, thought it time I mentioned this, again!

Simply apply for a Shell credit card, make 1 purchase on it , not need to be in the Shell station, you get credited 1500 points, = £10 value.

These are then claimed for a voucher worth £10 - to use on petrol & lots other stores.

It's up to you if you continue to build up points, worth around .7p/£ spent. Plus extra points on fuel & even more on Optimax.

www.shell.co.uk or pick up the leaflet in the filling station.

PS Mods might like to think of a link on here, to Shell, to earn a few pennies towards upkeep of our site!!!! Read more

Happy Blue!

Cor - I paid only 92.9p on Thursday in Manchester for Optimax.

Having a quandry over what my wife's next lease car should be. She get's a very good subsidised deal from her employing NHS trust. She currently has a Punto Multijet dynamic for which she pays £110 a month fully maintained, 20k per annum.

She will be due for a replacement early next year and we have to start "shopping" now as some cars will have long delivery times. Her mileage means a diesel makes sense (unless fuel prices go really crazy!), and she would like something a little larger and with five doors for convenience (and possibly a future child?). She enjoys driving my Toledo TDI 110 SE.

Having discussed things, we have under consideration a Leon 2.0TDi Sport (would be prefer stylance spec but not available with this engine), Octavia 2.0TDi Elegance, Golf 2.0TDi GT and Alfa 147 1.9 Multijet 150. Any others we should be considering, and should any of these jump to the top of the list? I really like the styling of the new Leon...

I got a parking ticket at a private car park yesterday (euro car parks) and I have been told my a friend that they have no way of tracing your address because they are a private company rather than a local authority, so they can't access police/dvla records. So if you don't pay the fine, they can't do anything. Does anything know if this is true?

Thanks. Read more
