When I click on various links in the HJ web pages, I get messages at the bottom of the page...i.e. connecting to ads tang0-zebra, or waiting for honestjohn to connect, read ukintellitxt, transfering data from etc etc etc.

The pages won't load until these things go thro' their motions. Takes quite a few seconds. Anyone else get this and can I get the damn thing to speed up? Read more

It is all rather irritating. I treated myself to a 2Mbit broadband connection and this stuff definately slows things down.

. . . which is, apparently, the Toyota Yaris Verso.

(Well, it was the most liked car in the annual Which? survey, with 92% of owners saying that they would recommend it to a friend, so the Aberdeen Press & Journal headline described it as Britain's favourite vehicle.)

Now, never mind the psychology of the respondants who voted it to this honoured position . . .

and never mind the way the thing looks . . .

has anyone in the Back Room (other than HJ, whose test I've just re-read) ever driven the thing? And if so, what did you think of the way it drove? Read more

If they don't produce a Verso in the forthcoming new Yaris
range, she will get a run-out T Spirit automatic from the
current range.

In that case i suggest you venture down to your local dealer and place an order sharpish - there is pretty much nothing physical in the country and i don't think it will be much longer before production ceases. It will not be replaced with a new version.

I went to fill up this afternoon and was surprised to find that the price of petrol had overtaken diesel. Is this happening in other places?

For the record, diesel was £1.06, petrol was £1.07 Read more

Hi I have A VW Golf 1.4 ryder that has done 130,000 miles. I`ve just had an oil and filter change at national tyres and discoverd that they have used synthetic oil (duckhams visco 7000 fully synthetic) I have never used synthetic oil before. Is it possible that this could cause damage i.e. dislodge baked-on deposits from mineral oils or affect gasgets and seals etc. I`m sure I read someware (can`t find the article)that its not reccomended on such an old engine. The engine uses about half A pint of oil between changes (every 3500 miles)and does not have any oil leaks. I`m going on A 150 mile journey in two days time and I don`t want to break down. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, David Gough. Read more

If you have changed the oil every 3,500 miles, I suspect the inside of the engine loks like a mirror so there is probably little muck to dislodge. I would not worry. After all if I said it is a serious problem, would you immediately change it; of course not. Generally speaking in such a clean engine, relish the extra protection.

I think this is motoring but my apologies if it's not.

And I am surprised to see the 'inane babble' post by DD, thought that would have gone down a lot during my absence!

Back to the point - I have read loads about youngsters under 16 now getting free bus travel in London, from yesterday - but what I haven't seen anywhere is if this is time-restricted? I admit to being lazy and not doing loads of research here, but does anyone know if this free travel includes rush hour (ie school travel) or not? If it doesn't it's really not that helpful!

Hi HF, from wot I can read on the TfL website, it appears to be free all day. See tinyurl.com/8oc4a

However, it's only for buses and trams, not tubes.

One of my trailer tyres went flat, and has consequently come away from the rim. Tried inflating it with an airline, but the air just leaked out the gap, rather than pushing the tyre out and sealing.

Any thoughts on how I can re-inflate it? Read more

have seen the butane gas trick, but didn't really fancy it.

Ratchet strap round the tyre has done the trick though, and tyre is now inflated.

Many Thanks

It's a 91 J reg 1.3 fuel injection Vdub polo GT

Always from cold (pretty sure about this) it starts fine. Sometimes when started from hot or after driving a bit. The car appears to hit a flat spot on the accelerator But I usually attribute this to carburettor models ..this is a fuel injection so what gives?

The problem in more detail:
When the car is acting up. and for example you are at traffic lights, if you press the accelerator down too fast the engine will jerk and miss a beat almost cut out, till you release the pedal, then if you re-apply the pedal as gently as you can you can bring the engine up to speed (not all the time sometimes it takes a few attempts). when you finally get going the car can whilst driving jerk and jump, you as a passenger or driver are pushed forward as the engine effectively stalls and relights itself.

Things I have done:
I changed the fuel filter, last time was a couple of years ago and they had fitted it backwards! it's now correct. I also opened the fuel tank and changed the fuel pump filter screen. This car has two fuel pumps one in the tank and one under the car both appear to be working.

Can it be dirty injectors if is only an itermittant fault?

I also noticed the garage had broken and then superglued and thus blocking up a small plastic pipe 3mm in diameter, it is part of a vacuum switch which is on the air inflow duct over the throttle chamber. The function of this switch is to open a flap (by vaccuum pressure) in the air intake (before the air filter box) when the engine is cold it is supposed to take air from across the radiator, when the engine is hot it is supposed to move the flap to take air from across the ehaust manifold heat shield. This switch was well and truely broken so I removed it, went to a scrap yard and took one and fitted it, different colour switch (orange as opposed to a purple one) but the VW parts man said the same switch had been fitted to all VW's from 1985 (or what ever) till 1997 (or whatever) and the car in the scrap yard fitted into this timeframe. In refitting the new one I had difficulty obtaining a good seal and I'm sure it is leaking a bit, I don't have anything to "listen" to the area with - can you reccommend a tool I can use for listening to vacuum leaks?. I have not yet taken the flexible air hose off this flap valve to see if I can see if the flap is functioning correctly or not. I will have a go at looking at this sometime.

I'll leave it there for now. please help.

Received a lovely fine this morning while using a supermarket car park, I know we are not to name and shame so I won't but i will say it is one of the big four.
They have given over responsibilty for car parks to a third party company to patrol and issue tickets.

Phoned the store who we polite but had no authority, phoned national customer services who were polite but again could not help, they could only suggest to write to them as that dept could not deal with telephones or e mails!!!

After a bit of ringing round I got hold of supermarkets head office , spoke to a very decent chap who admitted it was draconian and not good service and agreed to get the fine waved. Most pleasing indeed.

Persistance can pay off,if anyone else gets in this situation, just keep trying, well worth the effort

I kind of expected that answer hugo but I guess I'm neber going to see your point of view (hopefully). Actullay I retract that. I do see your point of view. I just don't agree with it or its validity! :-)

I don't see why parents should receive special concessions when it is I and others like me (without children) who pay huge amounts of tax to subsidise you who have children and then you expect me and my like to let you have the best parking spaces! Come on, be fair!

Careful Hugo, get the mop & bcket ready. I could explode at any second!!!
