Any advice please on my problem :-
My Renault Clio starter motor has failed on 3 occasions (sticky solenoid ?)
My Renault garage can find nothing wrong when they have it.
AA called out twice and eliminated electrical/immobiliser issues - administering a tap with a hammer to get it going.
AA recommend replacement.
Renault wont agree to a replacement under warranty because it doesn't fail when the garage has it Read more
So a dealer can get away with failing to provide a replacement, simply by not having a car available? Not much incentive to ensure that they do have one available, is it?
Perhaps there ought to be a definite obligation to provide a replacement. Is it not written into warranty agreements? If not, it should be.
Hi,
I have just bought a 1991 Nissan Patroln LWB with an extra high roof (think it's called a Safari or Grandroad) and would like to find out a little about this enormous beast.
It has the 4.2 litre turbodiesel engine with a 3 speed automatic gearbox - I think this is quite rare and actually seems to work quite well despite a mileage of 190,000!
Could anyone tell me the power of these turbo engines as most seem to be non-turbos in this country? In fact any info on this car would be great!
Can anyone also advise me what keep an eye on with this car and what to look out for meachanically. Can I expect hassle-free running with this tank?
Finally there is a little oil leakage from the small pipe that goes into the top of the Garrett turbo. Is this the oil feed pipe? If so is this oil just normal engine oil shared with the rest of the engine? What I'm getting at is: should I be particularly careful to change the oil regularly in order to prevent turbo wear etc.?
Thanks for any help.
Matt

I'm assuming it's a jap import, in which case they've always been available over there.
You can't beat a good straight six diesel for smoothness and torque, especially a nice old fashioned one that produces max torque at something like 1200rpm linked to a lazy auto box.
Only yesterday did I become aware of the new Dream Car promotion run by Shell and the Sunday Times, via sales of Optimax. It has been running since 5 May and goes on until 6 July, but my regular filling station gave me no cards until yesterday.
Note that no purchase is necessary and that cards can be obtained direct from the promotion company:
Dream Car Promotion
PO Box 454
St Albans
AL4 0YE
by sending a stamped, self-addressed envelope -- just one claim per person per day. Be warned: this company is tricky to deal with -- during the last promotion they failed to honour their obilgations under these terms and I finally managed to extract 14 unused stamped envelopes from them after complaining directly to Shell. This time around I shall remind them of that and obtain a certificate of posting for each envelope. Read more
Is that the impossible to get card? I haven't got it sadly. Only collected the first pack this week as the shell station I use only give them you if you ask for them even if you buy optimax.

I want to buy a satellite navigation system - and wonder whether anybody can tell me if there is one that we can use abroad, not only in Europe but also in North America.
I realise we would have to buy a special chip or CD rom for the US - but I thought it would be a huge help to have one of these when we are driving a hire car there. Apparently these devices do vary from country to country - navigation devices that turn up in cars bought secondhand from Japan can never be made to work here.
Any other observations on advantages and drawbacks to look out for would also be gratefully noted. Here, we'd want to use the thing in an Audi A4 and a Mitsubishi jeep. Read more
Check the rental price first - one of the Disney forums mentions that Virgin are offering Nav for 2006 for £3/day.
I'm not sure how much I'd trust Nav in the US, though. I've had it on 2 cars in the US and it does some bonkers things sometimes - I tend to use it as a confirmation / back up rather than trusting it 100%.
I may need to ship a 15" steel wheel with tyre fitted to another part of the country. Obviously, the cost would depend on how heavy it is. Without a set of bathroom scales I've no idea.
I know it will vary between individual wheels but could anyone give a ballpark figure as to how much this might weigh?
Thanks,

My wife has a T reg (1999) 1.6 eight valve Astra estate which we have had since it was six months old. Its only done 26,000 miles but we ensure it gets a good run once a week or so to avoid too many short journey problems. We've had the cambelt changed, do six month oil changes and it has a basic service once a year. Aircon is left on all year with occasional hot and cold runs as recommended by HJ to avoid problems. Checking the itemised service bills however I see that its never had a coolant or brake fluid change - despite the annual services being done by a main dealer. I intend to arrange the coolant and fluid soon. I was wondering though if there was anything else worth having done or if its a case of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"(gearbox oil? power steering fluid?). We intend to keep the car until its at least ten years old. Its never given problems so I hope to keep it that way- although as it ages there are no guarantees. Any advice on the worthwhile extent of preventative maintenance gratefully received. Read more
Oxygen free (I think!).
Right, I've decided to step in here before the pedants do :-)
I mean oxygen as in O2, not what's already in the water in the H2O.
SWMBO was in Scenic today and when she started engine, the service light came on and the warning message "Check Injection" came on and stayed on. Car not due service for another 8k miles.
I phoned dealer who took it in but as usual, it wasn't showing the message. They ran the diagnostics and nothing was showing up, according to them.
We now have car back and the message is appearing again.
Will take it back to dealer tomorrow but, in the meantime
a. Can anyone advise me what this warning is?
b. Why should this not appear on their diagnostics system? I thought these things were the bees knees?
Any advice appreciated. Read more

Any luck with your problem yet? Did you have a look at the Renault site? It's quite useful, although not as good as this site, obviously ;-)
Once a route is mapped in, does the display show current vehicle speed, like the camera detectors (Origin, Road Angel etc) do?
Thanks y'all. Read more
If it's the same as TT Navigator on a PDA then yes, but you may have to select the option in the "properties" section.
Could the back room please help me with the following query :
Took my car for a service at Nissan main dealer today, and one of the items I asked them to check was the fact that there is sometimes a 'popping' sound when I apply the brakes.
They phoned me and said the brakes needed 'shimming' and were beginning to 'break up'. While this sounded serious to me, they said it does not really matter and is not a safety issue. They recommended waiting for the next service before doing the 'shimming', at which time new pads would also be needed.
I guess I trust them because they are a main dealer, and one would assume it would be in their interest to do the work rather than not to - so perhaps they are just being very honest.
But, not being a technical person, any issues with the brakes do worry me.
Could anyone please tell me what 'shimming' is about? Is it do with the pads or discs? Does it matter if it is not done?
One other minor query - my front fog lights are not working, and the garage says there is a connection problem, and they need to trace through the wiring. This sounds like it could be costly, also I would need to take the car back again. Can you confirm that the front fog lights are not an MOT-fail item? If not, I think I'll just leave them. Read more
Nah, plenty of places still skimming discs. My mate has got a very nice on-car skimming machine. It gets used a few times a month and he reckons its one of the 'big ticket' equipment purchases that actually makes him money.
