My beloved 1989 Golf GTi 16 has developed a sharp whine that increases through the rev range. I have checked the 'fan' belt and the pulley for the alternator. With no belt in place the noise continues and that rules out the water pump. The cam belt was replaced recently and the car was running well. I'm mystified! Thanks. Read more
Will a Thule roof box fit a Picasso (2003) Exclusive. The leaflets and web sites appear to show that the sun roof on the Exclusive model means there is not fixing kit suitable.
Does this mean I would have to buy a new Citroen roof box?

If the bars for the 'normal' Picasso fit the Exclusive, then I would deduce that Thule themselves have reservations about fitting them with that particular sunroof installation...
Lovely article in today's motoring Torygraph about a woman who got her new Porch painted in a wonderfully extrovert Barbie pink: tinyurl.com/7ql4u
It looks brilliant; the first Porch that I wouldn't be ashamed to be seen in. Pity that no manufacturer seems to do anything like that as a standard colour. Read more
I was impressed actually.
Good luck to her. Why not have the car in exactly the colour you wish ? Or should she have checked that it didn't bother anybody else first ?
Mind you, I suspect she might struggle to sell it.
First of all let me tell you that I am not a WASP (White Anglo Saxon Protestent) myself, but ...
I am selling a car and have had 3 calls, all 3 were timewasters ... "Oh I want the car but ...
1. I'll do an HPI check - asks for very detailed info includind V5 doc no. and then don't hear from him, so I call and he says he still wants the car but still no deposit.
2. Offer a ridiculous price without seeing it.
3. I send hi-res pics, then go down to visit him but not given right address, then call him to be told he's not interested."
but, all 3 were of Asian extraction. Anyone else had this experience?
Thing is, they don't take NO for an answer and try to beat you down into submission like the poor old Tottenham Rd Indian electronics retailer in "The Apprentice", who eventually gave in and gave the product away for free! You try to be polite but it get's difficult to keep your cool!

There has been controversy in Australia recently regarding the rear vision when reversing 4 wheel drives. Here is a link to a report on some research done on this:
tinyurl.com/a44t9
I doubt if UK cars are much better in this regard. I remember hiring a Focus several years ago and finding reversing very difficult. I believe that there is a push on in the US to get reversing cameras fitted to SUVs. Something needs to be done. Read more
I don't see the problem myself, It is not the design of the cars/vehicles it is the standard of the driver. If you use the side mirrors, as you do in a truck, then you cant see what is directly behind you anyhow, you therefore have to look before you start your reverse. All it is down to is lack of proper observation. It would not matter if you fitted reversing cameras as their field of view is very narrow compared to that of the human eye, also the black and white versions give very little depth of view making it alot more difficult. I have used a number of systems and none of them are foolproof, including using a banksman. The only ones that "help" are the type that tell you when you are getting close to an object (some make a sound others use lights), but these are sold as reversing "AIDS", as the name suggest they only aid the reverse, at the end of the day people have to take responsibility for their own actions.
Shortly after receiving my new 2002 X-type 3.0 Sport it became apparent that it was extremely difficult to drive the car smoothly and at low revs and in traffic the vehicle kangaroos. During acceleration there appears to be a misfire at around 3000 rpm.
The vehicle has also suffered from amongst other things air-conditioning failure, several recalls, repeated central locking failure, acrid odour in the cabin, passenger seat airbag faults, corrosion of alloy wheels, and boot release failure.
I would be interested in hearingfrom any other owners who have experienced the same problems with the engine?

Crikey! I quite fancied one of these, not now!
Hi,
I have recently fitted a new head gasket to my engine, and in the process the engine was accidently turned over, and so the timeing has changed.
I think my model is a 1360 cc petrol zx reflex.
I understand that i need to lock both the cam shaft and the crankshaft and then put the belt on and tighten it.
On the cam shaft on the pully for the timing belt there is a hole wich of you turn the cam shaft round aligns with a small hole in the top right of the head, do i put a bolt in there to lock the camshaft, or is this the wrong position?
Next how do i lock the crankshaft in the correct place?
Thanks,
Darren

Hi All.
Does anyone know how to stop the window rubbers of my ageing Peugeot from streaking ? It looks lovely after a wax but I am dismayed to see black streaking from the window rubbers after it rains ! Is there anything I can put on them to stop them streaking ? Read more
Thanks all !
I have purchased a Oct 04 Honda Accord Diesel with 5,000 miles on the clock. I am keen to get Mobil 1 into the engine as i intend to keep the car a long time, is this to early for an oil change. Also which is the correct Mobil 1 product to use. Read more
As far as i knew, the standard oil as used by honda is 0W30 fully synthetic in the 2.2 CDTi engine. Which means that chances are that Mobil 1 (or a Castol etc etc equivalant)is already in the engine. Also HJ's recommendation is that the oil is not changed for the first year, but after that changed every six months.
The belt won't get that hot and won't expand much because of the material it's made from. The block and head will expand much more, especially if it's an ally head.
