Going back to my previous post 'Help! Kerb weight VW Passat ' does anybody know if I am covered under the sale of goods act 2003. It turns out the the gloss sales book was wrong (this was the info the dealer looked at when I asked about kerb weights)and the handbook is right. There is a error of 178kgs between the figures which makes is the diff between having to change my car or not.
I purchased it from new and it 13 months old.

I have had a parking ticket issued in a private car park for staying too long(I spent 1 1/2hr in Maplins).Fortunately the guy was there and agreed to cancel it when I complained.Looking at the ticket it says if I do not pay in 10 days they would charge £3 per day 'by way of liquidated damages'.Does anyone know what this means exactly? Liquidated damages - literally what it says -
Damages; the losses, expenses, effort, time, costs, etc. I estimate I will suffer
liquidated; turned into an amount of cash.

In this thread you may ask any question for which you need help, advice, suggestions or whatever.
It does not need to be motoring related. In fact, in this thread it should not be.
No Questions About PC's. They now go in another Thread.

Now thinking of an X5. She who must be obeyed, doesnt want 7 series/S Class.
So looking at 4.4 V8 X5's seenm couple advertised around the 22/23K mark. A sport and and non sport. Please dont suggest diesel, I hate the things and they are priced to high,
Can anybody advise which is best buy in terms of desirability for future resale and ownership.
I find it hard to beleive the 19" alloys and sport suspension of Sport are really needed or help ride/pocket when it comes to new tyre time.
BMW dealers tell me evrybody wants sport and they also seem about 1K more
Decisions decisionsns
PS Anything I should look out for apart from the norm?

Thanks for response.
What are diesels down to at auction and where would you suggest best pace to look for one. Any problems?
I live in Berkshire
There is a plethora of mobile body repair and dent removal services around which seem to break down into 2 groups - paintless dent removal and localised body repairs involving filling and painting.
Can anyone explain in simple terms how they work and what the different processes involved are? Do any of the services offer both types of repair at the same time?
Also, how do they charge? I read in another thread that the repair in question would take 3-4 hours and cost about £100.
Do they charge for the total time taken or the size, number of repairs undertaken?
Finally, if you're not too bothered about the odd ding and want to save a bit of money, is it worth waiting to accumulate a few before calling someone out and getting them all sorted in one go?
Thanks in anticipation. Read more
Oh I'm a great believer in Sod's Law RF - hence the fact that I haven't got the jobs done yet :) Fortunately an unexpected windfall is coming my way soon and, although I'll almost certainly keep the car (which I actually like very much), I can't help thinking about buying the newer model MPV in which case I'll want to get the car sorted out first.
My son parked up our Megane for a few hours yesterday. When he came back to the car, he unlocked the car using the remote key fob. When he turned the ignition on, there was nothing - no lights on the dashboard and no reaction from the starter. He then tried to lock & unlock the car using the remote (which resets the immobiliser) - but when he unlocked it it only unlocked the front doors. The lights wouldn't work. He then called the RAC, but while waiting he tried it one more time and the engine started - but there were no warning lights alight on the dash after the ignition was turned on and before he started it. This morning, no problems, car behaved normally. Interestingly, when he used the car the other day, the radio asked for the code - which it should only do if the power had been interruped, so it had obviously suffered a power outage unnoticed.
Now, I would initially suspect a bad earth or break in the main power lead, but the symptoms seem to suggest something slightly more obscure. Any ideas out there? Read more
The clue is the radio code disapearing previously. This proves that full 12 volts + or negative return from a source near the battery is being lost. The standby circuit for the radio code(power all the time) does not go anywhere complex or fancy.
So Remove + clean both battery terminals & connectors. Trace where the negative terminals go to earth, remove clean and remake those. Trace your 12v to the main fuse and give those terminals a clean too. While you are in full terminal cleaning mode it wont hurt to remove and clean the engine/body earth strap.
Can anyone direct me to a definitive list of every model/variant produced by all manufacturers in, say, the last 15 years? Read more
www.abi.org.uk/carinsurance/search.asp
An amazingly comprehensive list. It doesn't include lots of Fords from the 50s, but classic stuff from the 20s and even 1940s FIATs.
I presume that these older vehicles are listed if insurers have been asked to cover them in recent years.
Over the years (say at least 35) I have been driven in or have driven literally hundreds of hire cars and racked up tens of thousands of miles in at least 10 countries. As far as I can remember, I have never suffered (other than self-inflicted) a breakdown or puncture.
In fact apart from my father losing the keys to a Fiat minibus in 1974 in Pisa and him having a puncture on top of the Andes a few weeks ago, when he took a dirt track over the top rather than the main highway, we cannot recall between us a single incident.
Have I/we been lucky?

Once with parents we had a hired Seat (the fiat type) 600 in spain, a full two litre glass bottle of coke (or fanta I cant remember) exploded inside due to the heat,
Boy was that car sticky.
Lets have a straw poll. My father says that he never sees Japanese cars stuck on the hard shoulder or clearly broken down elsewhere, whereas he always sees other cars. I don't disagree but one does see Toyotas of a certain age, use and driver ethnic origin indicating lack of mechanical sympathy and heavy use I would suggest (mind you that could also be my mother-in-law!).
So, what cars have you seen clearly broken down recently?
My most recent was an almost new Merc CL500, parked up with a Merc Service Van next to it and the mechanic looking very worried.

Anyone on the A66 a couple of weeks ago would have seen my chum's 1997 Discovery chucking out an emulsion of coolant and oil and then then lose drive to the camshaft (belt or chain I know not). He claims to had had it serviced regularly by an independant.
That means 50% of the Discoverys he has owned have broken down.
The car was later recovered on the end of my towrope to his barn near Richmond.

RF hits the nail squarely on the head. If you are buying a car for a very specific purpose, then you msut get that scribbled down on the purchase order - like when you order goods through mail order and write 'time is of the essence' - it's there for your protection and if you bought it on a specific assurance and if it is written down, then you have a case.

Again as RF says, no chance... :(
