One answer could be that most people visitng here already have Autotrader set up on their own computer with all their own preferences for the search? Read more
Since fitting focus style front indicators to the bumper of our escort they wont flash at the correct rate.....all bulbs are flashing but too quickly....unless on hazards when they flash correctly. Any ideas pls? Read more
Cheers m8. The problem was that I wired Focus style side repeaters as main indicators and on that loom. Cure? Wire them to the side repeaters, re-wire 'big bulb' indicators in and hide bulbs in inner wing..........basically what you said was right!!!! Dan & Sam

Don't know if these are common or not, certainly not in my area.
Came across my first one the other day, in one of my town's more 'no-go-'type areas.
But I thought what a brilliant idea it was, and wondered if this could really be effective on at least causing traffic to slow down at pedestrian cross-points.
Surely if the pedestrian crossing is built on a speed bump (table?) then the potential for motorists to speed over these is very much reduced?
I know how much opposition there is to speed bumps etc (which I happen to disagree with - the opposition not the bumps) - but maybe if all legitimate pedestrian crossings had something similar then it would help to increase motorists' awareness and consideration at these points, maybe purely to protect their own car from damage but even so wouldn't it be a good thing? HF popping in *very* quietly to whisper to Cockle that she checked out one of the said Zebra Bumps tonight - and saw the beacons. They weren't flashing though - does that exonerate me? Anyway don't tell anyone.
And to JBJ - 'mental' image is just about right, I fear.
Adam - yes that's what I was on about and I agree, in my opinion they should be sufficiently far enough away from roundabouts and any other junctions, especially if they are supposedly to help schoolkids.

I\'ve just bought one of these units second hand to fit as a replacement to the CD player in my Vectra C SRi. Does anyone have experience of upgrading this? I assume I need to install a GPS antenna somewhere but what about the wiring? Is it the same? Anything I need to check?

Yes I did manage to install the NCDC2013 with a mono GID display and a GPS antenna fitted behind the display in the dash. I purchased an external GPS antenna and fitted the appropriate SM connector (available from RS components), but I need to plug the connector in before sliding the unit into the cradle as it doesnt mount in the metal cradle rear.
I also had to visit my Vauxhall dealer and have the main unit and displays coded to my vectra using the TECH 2... a lot of fuss but a great system! Unfortunately less than 12 months afterwards the cd drive mechanism (single slot) packed up, so I had to purchase another unit and replace the mechanism!
I'd like to add a colour screen but now I tend to use my PDA and Tom Tom more than the NCDC unit!

I know I'm not renowned for my sympathy for motorists by some fellow Back Roomers when it comes to road safety but I've just witnessed something which made me very annoyed. We live on a steep hill bisected by a main road. Every so often local idiots see fit to ride their pushbikes as fast as they can down the hill and straight cross the main road. A variant of "chicken" I'd guess you'd call it. Anyway, about half an a hour ago 3-4 idiots tried it again and one of them missed DEATH very narrowly indeed. A guy driving a brand new Elise along the main road was forced to slam his brakes on to avoid one of these "Deathwish" kids. Quite understandably, he jumped out of the car and exchanged a few choice adjectives with the stupid boy but then jumped into his car, slammed the door in frustration and smashed the side window in the process!! Now, he loses out through no fault of his own. I think it's about time cyclists were forced to have insurance. Read more
Put a surcharge on all things biking to cover insurance?
Thats right, all cars on the road just now are on DVLA's computer etc etc but a huge amount of them are still not insured.
So how exactly are we going to implement this with bikes if we can't do it with cars?
VM, I know where you are coming from but I am afraid its just not a goer!
I'm in the market for a new or nearly new diesel car (not SUV) with 4-wheel drive.
At the moment I can only seem to see the Audi A4 Avant Quattro that fits the bill.
I like the look and feel of the Mazda 6 Sport AWD and the Subaru Impreza WRX but they don't come with a diesel engine.
Are there any other 4x4 diesel estate cars out there worth considering?

No diesel in a Legacy, but there are some very good 2nd hand deals. Superb mechanicals and very rewarding to drive.
There is a dealer in Huddersfield so seems to be clued up and very helpful. My parents are hopefully about to buy a Forester from them..Theres another thought - Subary Forester , smaller and slightly higher than the Legacy and probably more economical.

Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive?
Alternators have been standard on cars for 20 or so years and IIRC 'sealed for life batteries' nearly as long.
Even after their introduction it seemed that a replacement battery was required every 3 or 4 years. However over the last decade it would appear that they have improved their longevity considerably. I did a straw poll amongst friends and nobody has had to replace a duff battery recently; some cars over 8 years old still have their original batteries fitted.
As far as I am aware battery technology has not changed so why the dramatic improvement in reliability? Or has reliability not improved? Read more
Brake discs and pads never last
Daughter picked up her Cooper convertible yesterday, electric roof packed up to-day, only goes as far as the sun roof option. Garage tried it of course worked, then daughter tried it did not, nothing showed on computer. Car has been booked in for three days week after next. Any body else with a similar problem.

There's a road test in the colour supplement of today's Sunday Telegraph.
Hello.
I have an 2002 estate which has covered 68k mainly motorway miles. I have read in the forums before that general opinion is that the timing belt should be changed soon, despite Peugeot suggesting 96k miles. In addition the clutch seems to take up at top of travel. From the Haynes manual and looking under the bonnet, both appear to be pigs to do. I have previously done both jobs on a 405 non turbo, not difficult just time consuming.
Has anyone any experience please?
The car and owner have been put out to grass so just local journeys now!

Book time for the clutch is some 7hrs+ but the job can be fairly easily done in a well equipped worshop in 4hrs....
Electronic tension? Nah, never use it (with no failures to date, fingers crossed!)
The 90deg twist method is too slack on an HDi engine - the belt shoudl deflect on it's longest run by about 5mm under firm thumb pressure when correct.

When coasting i.e.in gear and foot off the gas the engine is jerky and as soon as I apply the accelerator its ok. its bit like a petrol engine when you are in to high a gear

There is no idle speed control equipment as such on a diesel.
I would have thought there is somthing amiss in the fuel injection pump. I have experieinced this very symptom in my now departed 80TDi - the fuel pump failed some 40,000 miles later.

So where is eBay in HJ's guide of how to sell (& indeed buy) a car?
