Forum C5 posting
machika

My posting of our problem with our C5 door lock seems to have disappeared. Has it been deleted for some reason?

I wanted to know if anyone had had a similar experience of a fault having been rectified whilst undergoing a diagnostic check. Is this not a valid topic for debate?

Sorry, didn't read it until late last night, after I posted my second message. Apologies for the error. I didn't think it was that technical, just an observation.

Question Auto vs. Manual

Can someone please tell me why manual gearbox cars are more economical than auto ones?? I can just about understand why they would be in town but extra urban???

What a great looking car. I will seriously consider one of these when the Merc has to go but one thing didn't seem right (3.0TDI quattro 6-speed tiptronic CO2 emissions 229g/km (VED Band D diesel: ). The CO2 figure is just not good compared to my W211 E320 CDI.
Still a fab looking car though.

Whilst driving home after dark last night having refueled the wipers suddenly started to work at high speed and not fully synchronised. When I operated the wiper control the wipers worked normally and stopped when I switched off. Within half a mile it happened again and did several more times before I got home. The headlights were on but no other electrical equipment was in use. Any ideas or experience of something similar. PS It hasn\'t today - yet! Read more

Wonder if anyone can help?
SWMBO runs a '99 Vectra CDX with all the bells and whistles including climate control.
A few weeks back she told me that the display in the centre, which gives the fan speed etc was no longer working but the CCU was working fine so I haven't worried too much. Tonight she's told me that the display on the left which shows the temperature setting has now also gone dark and as she now can't tell what it's set for, so, can I do something about it?
Before I start stripping out the centre console, etc., can anyone enlighten me as to the likely problem, is it going to be a question of some lamps needing replacing, or am I looking at some serious spare part surgery. Indeed how do I get the centre console out, the Haynes manual is a little vague, God bless it!!!

No,Lee.
The radio display is an integral part of the dashboard computer display.
The displays I'm referring to are the left and centre of the three circular displays/controls immediately below the radio itself and directly above the ashtray/cubbyhole.
Cheers.

Hi all,
I'm new here, wish I'd found this place a while ago before my small tale of woe!

Anyway, I'll try and keep it brief: I recently sold a 1992 Peugot 405 for £300 (inc. 6M Tax and 2M MOT). Car was a bit tatty, but running OK, I agreed with buyer that car needed "some attention".

A week later, he phoned me to say he's had an inspection and it'll cost £600 to get it through an MOT. This was much more that he originally thought, so he wants to return car for full refund!

I was sure that I was in the right - but my local trading standards say that even on agreed private deal the car *must* be 'roadworthy' and 'capable of passing an MOT'. Even worse, I've unknowingly committed an offence under Road Traffic Act 1998 in that it is illegal to sell a car with faults in brakes, tyres, exhaust, lights etc and max fine is £5000!!!

Of course, the list of faults on my ex-cars inspection included headlight reflectors, exhaust, tyres and brake problems. Exactly those that make the car 'unroadworthy'.

This is incredible! Where does 'buyer beware' fit into this? Can we really buy any cheap private car, not bother inspecting, then get a refund if there's a fault in the critical areas? This sounds like 'buying on approval' to me!

Why are buyers advised to bother checking tyres, brakes, exhausts etc as if there is any fault in these components, the seller has commited a criminal offence and the buyer entitled to a refund even if they've not even seen the car?

I'd love to hear your opinions on this - thanks. Read more

It does sound like the buyer is pulling a fast one of some sort. The whole vehicle inspection thing sounded dodgy to me, "reflectors needing replacing" is a rather old garage trick to get some easy money for a job that doesn't really need doing. You can't expect a £300 car with 2 months of MOT to pass an MOT 100% first time, there's bound to be one or two little niggles (e.g emissions). But you wouldn't expect it to need major work either (e.g new engine).

I think if you are aware of any problems the car may have when you sell, is to write them down explicitly rather than use "requires some attention" which might be too vague.

I think he's threatening you with court to get something out of you, so might be worth calling his bluff and let him take you to court.

Hi all,

I've checked in BR site search and cannot find a problem the same as I am experiencing. Can anyone please help ?

As above...2197cc turbo diesel with 33,000 miles and maindealer serviced. Most of the time driven considerately and carefully.

The problem is uneven/jerky acceleration when pulling away from about 2 to 2.5k revs onwards. Doesn't appear to be as noticable when the engine is cold but varies from slight hesitancy to almost the effect of pumping the accelerator pedal. The road speed still increases, albeit unevenly.

On the last 30k service, this was mentioned to service manager who couldn't find anything wrong (sir)with the car but hoped that the service might have corrected it anyway.

Can anyone suggest a possible cause.

In anticiptaion,

AI

Hi all,

Not a device to elevate this topic to the top of the list, but feedback further to the advice given.

Saab man he say no software update relevant to my model year. (Incidentally no ECU/computer fault code revealed itself either).

Duly applied injector cleaner/engine decongestant (unfortunately couldn't find Millers in North Wales as recommended) and took the car for an extended italian tune up with lashings of red line driving.

No gratifying plumes of sooty black smoke in the rear view mirror however, but eurika !!! problem solved and cured.

I hope that this feedback assists others.

Grateful thanks,

AI

I daresay this will be moved to computer woes in due course, but I'm still having trouble with explorer 6.0.2800 crashing whilst using this site.

I think I read of somebody else a couple of days ago making the same complaint.

Is it just me? (It only seems to happen on this website.) Read more

Ok HJ, that's 64Gb a month. If you check out www.servermatrix.com all the servers come with 1200Gb a month! One of the SuperServer 2.8s would be fine for the BR for $199 setup and $109/month. I have my server with them and I have had excellent support and uptime.

Hi,
Does anyone know where I can get hold of a headlamp conversion kit for a Mk 3 Punto? I'm off to Italy in a couple of weeks and whilst it used to be easy to find kits for older cars, the new Punto has clear lens headlamps and I can't find a conversion kit/pattern anywhere!
Any help much appreciated. Read more

If johnny foreigner wants to drive on the wrong side of the road he should wear shades at night, it's not our problem he's getting dazzled!!!!

Seriously my local Fiat dealership does kits (had to get 1 for my daughters Stilo) Not that it made much difference as far as I could see (or rather couldn't) against the garage door after I'd fitted them, but at least the stick on bits make it legal and less likely to get you in trouble with the carabineri!
