Sounds fab.
Is it true that the next A4 will be RWD?

When H.J. road tested the new BMW E60 5 Series, it was of the bottom of the range 520i petrol, which was always going to be underpowered.
The 530d however is a different proposition with more than 10% more torque than the Audi 3.0TDi (368 lbs/ft against the Audi`s 331 lbs/ft and combined average fuel economy of 40.9 mpg against the Audi`s combined figure of 33 mpg.
The two vehicles need to be tested back to back to get a meaningful comparison and I look forward to the first road test alongside the M. Benz 320 CDi

Judging by the way oil prices are heading I think you might just be lucky ST!

I think I am actually in love with the new look Audis... that big heart shaped grill is beautiful! I think I might have to be restrained from stroking them at the Motorshow...

Looks like some serious competition for the Mercedes E Class.
I was surprised at some of the price differentials.
For instance the 3.0TDI quattro SE 6-speed Tiptronic is £1,595 cheaper than the identically equipped 3.2 FSI quattro SE 6-speed tiptronic. Not often diesels are that much cheaper.
It also seems difficult to see why the 4.2 quattro SE 6-speed tiptronic should cost a huge £11,095 more than the 3.0TDI quattro SE 6-speed Tiptronic.

With ref to H.J`s earlier comments :-
Yes, but the 530d has bigger wheels and lower profile tyres and a lot of them have 'active' steering, so while they are quick they are not the drivers cars that thr 520i and the 525i are on standard wheels and steering.>>
I have checked out BMW UK website and Active Steering is not a standard fitting but an £810 extra cost option on the 530dSE. Also the standard fit tyres on the 530d SE are 225/55/R16, and 18" wheels are a £1415 cost option.
I agree wholeheartedly with H.J`s views that BMW`s handling is at its optimum on standard (non sport) suspension and standard high profile tyres. Sports suspension and low profiles means very hard ride and constant tramlining and yet many ignorant younger owners reckon they are an essential part of the specification. IMHO they have much to learn when you put appearance and vanity before safety.

My 530d has just that spec, no active steering, smaller wheels, in the final analasys, the ride is a smidgin harsher but the handling is crisper than the 2003 old shape five it replaced. It was HJ himself that suggested that the lower spec'd car was better and that's why I spec'd mine thus.

What a great looking car. I will seriously consider one of these when the Merc has to go but one thing didn't seem right (3.0TDI quattro 6-speed tiptronic CO2 emissions 229g/km (VED Band D diesel: ). The CO2 figure is just not good compared to my W211 E320 CDI.
Still a fab looking car though.
