Hi
My mum has a year o2 registered 1.6 Petrol Vauxhall Astra, the problem is that very occasionally, there is a slight misfire, it only really happens when moving up from second to third gear, it can happen at anytime (it doesn?t matter if the engine is cold or at normal operating temperature) and only happens occasionally.
We have taken it back to where we got the car from and they ?Plugged it in? but of course the car was behaving fine, and they could find no fault.
Anyone else had the same problem,?? Recently been serviced.

I've just got back from a week in Sorrento and thought it might be helpful to post some views and comments. Driving is pretty devil may care with mindless overtaking etc but we didn't see one accident during our stay. That said, 9 out 10 cars have one or more corners damaged and/or scrapes down the sides. Hire cars are very expensive, I can't remember if it was Euros 360 or 460 for a Punto for a week but either would be high! If you hire a car you aren't going to get the benefit of viewing the scenery, if you are driving, and I don't rate your chances of not paying the XS on your CDW, on a week's hire. The trains, ferries and local buses provide a very keenly priced and relaxing alternative to self-drive. Read more
I have bought an automatic got it handy now i want to convert it to manual.

Any help would be appreciated Read more
I'm with Rosey on this. I converted an SD1 V8 from auto to manual - but it was quite easy because there were no body mods and I simply used a knackered old manual as a donor for it's engine & box plus all the bits.
It was my last rear drive car (fairly mod'd too) - got rid of it about 7 or 8 years ago now and have regretted it ever since. Aaahhh, oversteer. The grin used to cut the top of my head off.
Search and search until you find a manual - there must be one out there.
Just done a weekly fluids check on my vehicle (\'95 306 1.9 D turbo) and it looks like a small head gasket failure. There\'s a bit of oil in the water but the oil looks fine (no signs of moisture under the filler cap). Thing is I need to catch a flight from Stansted airport at 630 am tomorrow (sunday) morning and have no option other than to drive. All in this will be a 300 mile round trip. Would any of you still drive the car in this condition or am I risking causing permanent damage? the car\'s already done 135k.
Thanks in advance for your replies. Read more
have you done the head gasket yet?
If you are going to do it yourself give yourself a good 8 to 10 hours, it is a pig of a job.
You have to extract the studs form the manifold to get it off, and crawl underneither the car etc.
I would suggest getting the old WD40 out the night before and soaking all the manifold bolts etc.
You also have two choices, you can by a head gasket kit and do all the head, valve seals etc... or you can just replace the gasket, far easier.
If you do just choose to replace the gasket and not the valve seals etc make sure you buy a thermostate gasket and rocker cover gasket as well, you will need one.
Shrewsbury? I was born there 27 years ago to the day!!
Have had trouble for a few days with one glowplug apparently not working. Would start OK, but with one cylinder missing and grey smoke, which would clear within a few seconds
Decided to wait until the weekend, when I would start the 405 axle job
Removed brown wire to glowplugs and checked for voltage from control unit, but was only a few volts, not the 12v I expected.
I will have another look, but my present theory is that the glowplug has gone short circuit and taken the control unit with it. I still need to find the faulty one and replace, as it may take the replacement unit with it
Anyone any experience with this? I will have to double check, as the unit is £77.08 with 3 days delivery quoted
Have got an offer of NGK plugs for £8 each as against Bosch at £10
Just to crown things I went to my 309 to move it, before deciding whether to tax it while I repair the 405 and the battery read 9v. Hope I have just left the interior lights on or something

?Ok, no more numberplates of a *suggestive* nature please.
DD. BR Moderator.?
I?m mindful of the ?official? post on swearing, which I happen to support. It?s good to see that the BR mods uphold some high standards of decency, and I for one wouldn?t want to visit, let alone contribute to, a site where low life run riot with language dredged from sewer sludge.
But I do think that sometimes the censorship and advice policy is just a bit Victorian. The admonishment above was in response to a post in another thread that referred to humorous number plate that, with a touch of imagination, suggested a word beginning with B and ending with KS meaning a couple of items of male tackle.
Come on mods, this is hardly a descent to the depths of depravity. And nor need it be the start of a slippery slope. Use words one would use in front of Mum? Well mine, at close on 90, doesn?t bat an eyelid at the odd mild swear word, even though she never uses them herself. And you can hear the A, B, C, P and S words on Radio 4 at 6.30 ? not that I?d like to see them all over the BR.
So why not lighten up a little, mods? Nothing wrong, surely, with the odd use of carp or something humorously abusive when emotion runs high, especially when there?s a twinkle in the contributor?s eye.
Of course, you can tell me ?If you don?t like it, you can go away promptly?, but this censoriousness seems to me both a tad frustrating and comical. Move closer to 21st Century Britain (but not all the way)?

I was wrong. Mods are right.
You need clear rules. Shades of grey don't work.
Sorry I raised it. Business as usual, then.
hi all
I have a 1998 omega cdx with climate its 2 years since i had the system serviced but it had been running ok but i thought ihad better get it serviced. I went to a local "Expert" gave me a load of waffle about disinfenctant, tracer dye, and the pollen filter so I told him to carry on. However when i got the car back he had a thermo probe on the dash and it was showing 6 degrees but the fan was on full with the setting at LO I thought ok so i paid him and set of on my merry way. But i turned it back to AUTO setting on 18 and it started blowing warmish before that if it was a warm day i set it to 18 and I did not have the blower blowing full speed it it gave a nice temp in the car when i stopped you could tell the differene when I got out of the car as it was quite warm outside, on the rare ocasions I put it on Lo when i got out of the car the heat outside used to knock me back that as now gone. The symptom it is giving me now is it is low on Refrigarant i rung him back and he said he had drained it and regassed it to the manafacturers spec and that his work was done correct also it seems like the fan is not running when the air con is on on my previous cars and this one when the air con was on the fans started and went of when you diengaged the air con i think ive spent £80 for nothing and made my system worse any ideas
thanks all

You can't have an airlock in an a/c system. Infact, there should be no air in it whatsoever. If there were, you'd be getting a few other problems.
So he added a bit more gas? How much, and how did he know how much was already on there? Did he recover and recharge?
I think the second man was the idiot for coming out with bull and just adding more gas without knowing how much was already there.
How much would a 1997 P Audi A4 TDi (110), 90k miles, 2 owners, FSH, in red with alloys, fetch privately?

No a/c and VAG's red goes nasty after 5-6 years, I'm not sure the car is worth more than £3,500.
We (euphemism for my partner, which she employs to get me to do the dirty work) recently picked up a ticket for overstaying our welcome in a thirty-minute zone. The ticket wrongly states the waiting time as one hour, so is it enforceable? (Offence code W658.)
Hampshire Constabulary are stonewalling, saying that we should see them in court if we want to pursue the matter, so I'd like to know the chances.
Please don't bother to tell me that we should pay up and stop whingeing - I know we committed an offence (it was over an hour) but we have to have our documents in order... Read more
Thanks DVD (and Spinner). You've probably told me all I need to know - I was just hoping that the fact that the sign said one thing and the ticket another might be some sort of defence. I can well imagine a magistrate viewing the matter entirely differently, so I'm not going to pursue the matter if it isn't reasonably watertight.
I assume that offence code W658 is a general infringement code, rather than one for a specific interval?
Over the last thousand or so miles my Rover 414 (96N) has developed a high pitched intermittant squeaking noise from the drivers side front. It happens at all speeds, sounds like the brake pads are just touching the disk and comes and goes as the car corners or goes over bumps. I can make it stop by lightly applying the brakes but it comes back again after braking. Just before I bought the car in late Feb it was MOTed by the supplying garage who said they had replaced the front brakes (and a rear wheel cylinder) to get it through the MOT. The car stops in a straight line and Ive never had the brakes on it fade although theyve never felt particularly sharp. Drawing from my experience with hydraulic disc brakes on decent mountain bikes, Id say the pads arent set up correctly and /or the system needs bleeding. Also, if the disc on this wheel is almost constantly being rubbed by the pads, wont this glaze them and render them less effective? What say you car mechanics?!?

Try as Peter mentioned ie cleaning the pads or should I say roughen up surface of dics and pads.Dont use sandpaper it makes matters worse.emery cloth preferably medium grain will do the job.any motorist shop should know what that is.? did you not get a warranty on the job.?Halfords as far as I know dont make discs
Cheers guys, ill pass the information on, it hasnt happened for a while, dont know why, but if it happens again. then we will get it checked out, using the advice.
