Hi
I?ve got a Renault Clio N reg petrol
I have 1 key with remote, but remote doesn?t work. As it won?t work I can?t turn off the immobiliser/alarm, so now I can?t start the car. Does anyone know how to disable it, or where I might find the info to get around this problem?
Thank you in advance

Have a look at bangernomics.tripod.com/buyguide.htm for a few suggestions, though it was written a couple of years ago, and many of the under £1,000 suggestions now come in at under £100.
There are loads & loads of cars available at under 1,000 that fit your spec. Couple of off the wall suggestions for you as well (cue chorus of BRers saying 'don't touch that one!')
Honda Accord (estate) '93 on of which HJ says 'Tend to be entirely trouble-free as long as serviced on time.'
Audi 100 ('91 on A6 shape are only 200-300 for a saloon, bit more for the V6 which is a seriously serious engine).
If you can stand the shape of the earlier Audi 100 ('83 to '91), you should be able to get a nice one for under 100 on eBay with 12 months MOT. Your remaining £900 will pay for the summer holiday!
If it's no good, then buy another from ebay & get the good bits off it.
Be you haven't thought of a W123 Merc. A joy to work on, bombproof, over-engineered & will give you cruising with great style & 30mpg for the 230E (230TE if you want the estate). £1,000 will get you a 150k example with FMBSH & no rust if you keep your eyes open.
Nice XJ6 with full Jag SH (don't settle for less) for £500 or less. Loads to choose from on eBay. Mind out for rust, rust & rust, and very expensive tyres.
Or a Mondeo of which I have no experience but always seems to be the favourite car when this question comes up. Boring though...
Last Friday?s Telegraph had an obituary for Robert Fulton, reputed to be the first to go around the world on a motorbike about 1937. It seems that he made a rash remark about doing so at a dinner. The rest of the table picked up on it, and he had to fulfil. As luck would have it, one of the guests was the owner of Douglas motor cycles, and fixed him up with a custom made bike. In rural Turkey he rode over a bridge which wasn?t there, resulting in loss of consciousness for several hours. Spent seven weeks in hospital in Baghdad with jaundice. He was knocked out in Sumatra when a monkey threw a coconut at him. Jailed as a smuggler in Indonesia. Was accompanied across Japan by a motorbike club 33 strong. The Douglas performed well, only problems six punctures. Travelled 40 000 miles. His motorbike was never tampered with until his return to the US of A, whereupon it was stolen.
He later invented and marketed an ?Airphibian? flying car and the ?Skyhook? aerial rescue system as used by the CIA.
He died aged 95. The world is now a poorer place!

Hadn't seen anything about this before.
Received my renewal for my VED today and included was some info about a new type of V5.
Apparently when you renew the VED, or declare SORN, from June 2004 on, then shortly after you will be reissued with a new V5C for your vehicle, this will continue until June 2005 after which time every vehicle should have a new V5C. The new V5C's will be a common format across the EU and will enable re-registration of the vehicle in any EU country.
The interesting bit is that from 1st July 2005 the old V5 will no longer be valid, therefore anyone offering you a vehicle after that date with an old V5 will be advertising the fact that they either haven't paid their VED this year or failed to Sorn the vehicle!
Not quite sure what the repercussions will be but it could get interesting, I would suggest that it would make any vehicle without a new V5C virtually worthless, most untaxed vehicles probably are anyway, I suppose.

I wonder what happens to old V5's for cars stored up before the SORN regulations came into force, they still dont have to be SORNed?
As there are many threads relating to complaints to garages, shops etc, I feel that it is prudent to point out a little paragraph in a Which? report that I read at my dad\'s - I am not sure if it is this month\'s or the exact content.
However, the summary of it was that someone had complained to a well known clothes shop about a product and, when he was getting nowhere with his complaint, he claimed that he was from Trading Standards in the hope that they would panic and back down. The shop in question - ND checked this out, it turns out that he wasn\'t, he was taken to court and fined, I think , £1500 for impersonating an official!
Might be worth remembering when you are fighting your corner against a garage etc that you stick totally to the truth, otherwise things could backfire on you horribly!
Unless of course you do work for Trading Standards...
(Mods, not sure if the retailers name is allowed but if not I am sure you will delete it)

Or someone whi didn't actually have a leg to stand on.
...will be late. Came across this on the DVLA website:
Important information regarding V11 licence reminders for June

No. I have to tax one new car each month. If I am lucky.
And I have no friends. Abroad.
I\'m looking at s/h Pug 307\'s as a replacement car.

Thanks for the advice Artful Dodger.
So the Rapier might be available with the armrests. I found the seats really comfy with the armrests on my LX & so would like them if we decided to get a 307.

Hi,
I'm looking to buy a second-hand car (<£2k) with a large load carrying capacity and i'd really appreciate some recommendations.
As i live in the centre of Glasgow, I get hammered by the insurance company and so it would have to be a low insurance group (Pref <6). I'll also be doing some long trips down south every few months but as the cost of these would be shared fuel economy isn't so important.
Cars i've considered so far are:
Skoda Felicia Estate (seem to be rare)
Nissan Almera
Any more ideas?
Many thanks,

Is there a frugal, muddyboot and doghair proof car that isn't a 4x4, and has nice comfy seating for 4 older/elderly folks (incl drive)plus small dog. Say a combination of the hardwearing non-static seat trim of my old Accord with a hose-down floor? Budget say 6-12k (the overnight parking is vulnerable and we don't want to fall in love with the car, just to have something practical that the dog's hairs won't cling too). It's for 12-15k a year motorway plus v.local. One problem is wanting to avoid dark inside colours as claustrophobic, but fortunately beige/grey inside works well with mud and white hairs. Does such a car exist? Read more
Seriously, I get the impression you prefer your canine companion to travel in the cabin, rather than isolated in the rear load area, so highly recommend a Hicraft dog car harness, or similar. There are five sizes available, and attach to a seat belt so that in the event of an accident, Muttley does not become a dangerous projectile, and lives to chase more rabbits.
I have sold this, and similar products, from my pet stores for several years, and consider them an invaluable safety essential extra. Combined with a large waterproof pet sheet, with velcro tabs, you should have change out of £20!
Whatever vehicle you purchase, I wish you happy and safe travelling for all the occupants. My Legacy upholstery copes well with a Lakeland, Westie , Lurcher and Beagle, whom, when left unsupervised for a short period, refuse to stay on the pet sheet!
Unless you need 40+mpg, you can pick up an excellent 4 year old Legacy estate for well under £6k.However, the HDI diesels previously mentioned are an excellent alternative. It just depends on budget and priorities, mine being reliability not ultimate mpg (and my purchase budget is very limited).
Hi all,
i have an electrical fault on my rover 416 tourer, the fuse that feeds (according to the fuse cover!) the front wiper/wash keeps blowing, it also appears to stop the electric roof working??
