Hi everyone
I'm new to this forum, but would like some assitance with a problem I have with my Renault Clio 1994 RL diesel 1.9.
I have no servo assisted braking which makes braking very heavy indeed at low speed. However, when I was on the motorway yesterday at high speed the brakes were very sharp so the power assistance seemed to be working ok.
I've checked back through the cars history and found a couple of receipts that show that it has had this problem previously. Once it had a new servo and previously there was dirt in the valve in the Vacuum Pump. Why would it keep re-occuring?
I'm not sure what to do as I'm concerned that I may replace a part for it only to break again. I'm not particularly technical but have done work on cars before (e.g swapping a head on an escort).
Please can anyone advise on what this problem could be and how to fix it.
Thanks in advance

not really in a singing mood earlier this morning,
came out of house dressed in my best to go into town, only to find a large black stain under my car that ran into the gutter.
Dabbed stain, rubbed it 'tween finger and thumb...felt oily!, sniffed it..came to conclusion twas brake fluid!. went back in house, changed into "muckys", went back out to car, popped bonnet, checked m/cylinder... full of yellowy stuff, checked power steering... full of red stuff, oil and water o.k. decided to check underneath, so gets humongous tree stump out of shed, lugs it round house to car, jacks front of car up and plonks it on stump. Crawls underneath, checking every pipe, hose, boot, connector, etc but appeared fine, very dirty, but fine and dry!.
Crawled back out and started engine, in case it leaked whilst running, whilst i was waiting for it to warm up, neighbour comes out and says "that was only a sapling yesterday, this morning it's lifted your car up!.. must be something to do with sellafield....ho-ho-ho-". I pointed to the stain and told him i had a brake fluid leak, he bent down, rubbed it between finger and thumb, and confirmed that itwas brake fluid. i told him i had spent 20 mins underneath car, but couldn't find where it was coming from, he said " no you won't on that!! it's off our tranny, me and our lad were bleeding the brakes yesterday, and thats where he knocked the milk-bottle over"....D'oh
please mr mods, can i nominate him as the first entry in a "complete berks" thread, and can i be second!!

thats a relief ian, begining to think i was the only silly billy that has fallen Foul of this! won't get caught again, but will investigate stains a little more cautiously in future.
don't really fancy the kitty-litter suggestion, have you seen the amount of mogs around here! would be just asking for trouble, flocks of mogs all digging away, what a cat..astrophe!!!

Is it just that picture (eyes right) or does anyone else think that the New Rover 75 V8 and Audi A6 must have been separated at birth? Or do they just source their grills from the same supplier?

Hi Guys,
Have an M-reg Honda Accord coupe and every time the aerial at the back goes up or down I get a thump, thump, thump noise as though it is on a spool of some kind that is rotating when it should\'nt.
Any clues on whether I can tinker in the boot and fix it myself?
Does a clip or something need replacing?
Cheers

Never put oil or WD-40 on a power aerial - it makes matters worse. Polish it clean, maybe using a little wax or silicone spray.
Use silicone grease in the spool mechanism.
Didn't see this mentioned last month when it was in the news, but heard last night throught the Air Cadet grapevine about NCP falsifying photographic evidence in Bury in order to make an illegal £60 fine stick. Police are now looking into making criminal charges. Think the moral is to always demand to see photo evidence, no matter whether for speeding or other offences.

A MOTORIST has won his appeal against a £60 parking fine after an independent adjudicator concluded that NCP, the car parking company, had faked a photograph to prove its case.
Kevin McGuire, 51, an aerodrome director, was celebrating victory yesterday in the case that calls into question the validity of digital photographic evidence.
The judgment, made at an appeal hearing in Bury, Greater Manchester, could have wider implications for motorists caught on camera and open the way to many more appeals.
Mr McGuire, from Heywood, in Bury, was determined to fight the ticket for parking on a Sunday in what he believed was a public place.
He had parked in Bury market place at 7.15am on Sunday, August 31. He was due to take a group of Air Cadets by coach on a visit to a barracks in Blackpool.
He insists that there were no signs anywhere to say that parking was forbidden. He also parked in a bay where parking was free on Sundays and Bank Holidays.
When he returned later that day he found the ticket on his windscreen.
?I immediately wrote to NCP to challenge it,? said Mr McGuire. ?They wrote back and said it was a suspended bay and said that they had put up signs the night before, so it was my fault.
?But there were definitely no signs when we arrived on the Sunday morning.?
NCP, which is contracted by Bury council, produced two photographs for the appeal hearing before Sarah Breach, the parking adjudicator.
One was black and white and the other was in colour. They purported to show the sign on the day before and then the day on which Mr McGuire parked his car.
Ms Breach concluded that the two photographs were the same but the date on one had been changed in order to destroy the motorist?s case.
Ms Breach said: ?A careful comparison of these photographs reveals they are the same. The cloud formation in both, together with the angle of the photograph, leaves me in no doubt.
?The only conclusion I can draw are that someone has altered the date on the black and white appeal photograph from 31.8.03 to 30.08.03.?
She said she was satisfied that NCP submitted the two photographs to make it look as if they were taken at different times, and took the unusual step of ordering the council to pay the costs.
The adjudicator concluded: ?I consider the council?s conduct in resisting this appeal to be wholly unreasonable.? The ruling calls into question the reliability of similar digital evidence. Meanwhile, Bury council faces hundreds of claims from other drivers.
Mr McGuire expressed his astonishment at the alleged subterfuge and said that those who tampered with the evidence should be prosecuted.
He said: ?How many other photographs may have been altered in this sort of case? Heads should roll.
?It is disgusting that evidence has been doctored. It won?t be the first time, so I think all cases where they have won on the basis of digital photography should be revoked.
?These are the very people who David Blunkett wants to dole out these new on-the-spot fines, but this shows they are not trustworthy.?
NCP operates 600 car parks across the UK, including ten at the country?s busiest airports.
Nicola Frost, the company?s communications manager, said: ?This matter is being investigated internally. I cannot make any kind of statement.? Bury council is also carrying out its own investigation.
A council spokesman said: ?The parking adjudicator allowed Mr McGuire?s appeal but in doing so has questioned the evidence submitted by the council. The council and NCP have initiated an internal investigation to establish the facts surrounding this case and, where appropriate, action will be taken.
?Both organisations are jointly committed to maintaining the highest levels of integrity in the enforcement of parking regulations,? he added. Read more
Maybe it started as a quote but was doctored?
Can anyone tell me if it is normal for a car to burn oil. I have a polo - H reg and if you put your foot down (Not high revs - Just Foot down - there is a burning oil smell in the cabin). The car is using oil at probably about a litre per 1 -2000 miles.
My dad said that older cars do burn a bit of oil and the VW book says that you should keep an eye on the oil level as an engine can use a litre per 1000km. Is this true? Should I be worried about it - I bought the car to run between manchester and middlesbrough so it is a workhorse and I only paid £500 for it. The engine does run very smoothly other than that and another intermittent problem which I wrote about.
Cheers for any help.

It will probably be the oil breather rubber pipe, these rot through every few years (oil on rubber contanimation).
If not then the oil breather in the back of the engine needs replacing, it circular in shape - needs prising out - hard to get at.

None of them made a profit. I believe the LNER didn't pay a dividend for years.
My sons 98 Passat Tdi has just developed a loud squeek from the near side font suspension.
It squeeks with the slightest movement of suspension or turn of the steering wheel.
I was amazed how complicated the front suspension setup was on this car with umpteen balljoints & rubber bushes, which makes identifying the source rather difficult.
It seems to be coming from one of the lower ball joints.
Has anyone else had a similar problem & a resolve.? Read more
Yes - suspension arms, 2 per side, either squeak or more usually knock. Had to replace mine between 100k and 130k miles. An independant specialist is cheaper than a dealer...

if there's a rheostat ...
then they're apt to become corroded.
"a" rheostat, so "it's" apt, surely?
