Is it just that picture (eyes right) or does anyone else think that the New Rover 75 V8 and Audi A6 must have been separated at birth? Or do they just source their grills from the same supplier?

I admit, the first thing I thought was 'what grille?' then my mouth and the cars mouth hit the floor.
Woah, that's a big grille. Looks good though, nicer than the Audi A6. Bet it'll be cheaper, faster and more well-appointed inside too.
I think I'm going to sell my granny, any takers?

I've always like the 75 which, when you strip away all the political invective which seems to get hurled at threads like this, is a lovely car. Not quite sure what I'd do with a 4.6 V8, and yes it does look a litle like the lantern-jawed German, but give me a diesel or a 2.5V6 and I'd be happy.
However...I confidently predict that none of that will stop this thread degenerating into the usual nonsense. I'll come back when it gets to post 130 or so.

i think it sounds great a rover with a v8 again i hope it sells loads so i can buy one in a few years (cheap and plenty of spares in breakers)
|
Do you expect there to be plenty in the breakers yard within only a few years? Doesn't say much for their reliability?
[ducks for cover]
|
Patently: Do you think that the grills came from McDonalds, or am I missing the point...
[ducks all round; delicious crispy]

Might be a lovely car but petrol V8s are in terminal decline in this sector. Now if they had an ultramodern 6 or 8 cylinder diesel then people might perk up.
|
|
Nah. Can't beat a big petrol engine. Diesels have no soul.
|
i've always liked the looks of the 75, this model imho, was rover trying to go back to the "glory" quality coachwork days when the name actually stood for something. Admittedly this new monster looks a "real beast" and i'll bet it frightens mere mortals, but couldn't that huge low-slung grille be it's achilles heel?, seems plenty of room for a road-bourne "nasty" to go through.

My curiousity is where is the Vitesse name, this car is a 260Ps version developing 400Nm of torque, maybe a wilder 320Ps version is in the offing.
The colour doesn't really suit the grille aperture, in a darker colour it would look so big. The trim though is magnificent, I own a Connoisseur version and that is luxurious compared to similar priced offerings.
According to a whisper, this car will be available in Connoisseur as the show car is in Monogram which is the high-spec personalised trim. I think a Raven Black version with the tinted windows they offer would look very menacing indeed especially now the waistbands are offered in a body colour trim.
And of course it should be back to being the Ministerial car of choice which was always the preserve of Rover V8's. Wonder if the Queen is going to order one?

Yes, a V6 diesel version of this car would go down a storm. But who will sell them such an engine?
Or perhaps they should weld two L-series engines together to make a 4.0 V8 diesel of their own! With that grill and that amount of torque, it'd frighten the living daylights out of everything else on the motorway!

or maybe deafen everything else on the motorway? ;-)

McDonalds have more style than that. And how long would the grill(e) survive if used to cook hamburgers?
|
you may remember the t.v programme "a cook on the wild side"
Hugh Fearnleigh-wittingstall drove his old landy around britain, and his "mobile cooker" was the mesh grille of said landy fastened to a cut-open tin jerry-can!!, mind you he also cooked things wrapped in foil, on his manifold, probably one of the first dual-fuel landys. however, i digress, apart from going rusty where it was burnt, the grill lasted for the whole series!!!.

A few years ago when I was working in an Office in South London, there was a guy who brought bacon sarnies in from home and kept them warm in his Cavalier's engine bay while he drove to the office. I never believed it until one morning I saw him taking out his brunch (wrapped in foil) from under the bonnet!

I think that new front end with big grill is fantastic.
I get i bit hacked off with people going on about Rover reliability, overall I dont think they significatly worse than a lot of other manufacturers, and the 75 tends to do fairly well in relability survays.
much rather have a 75 than the kak that is a Chris Bangalised B*W.

looks great and exciting, cheap to i bet!

Naah surely they could make a common rail V8 version of a coupla Perkins diesel out of some old Montegos? :P
