nearly all of the lights on my dash board are out appart from the right hand side of the speedo display and one elictric window switch the rest are gone,can you replace them?is it difficult?thanks

You can get the bulbs from Halfords although not cheap. Its easy once you have the instrument cluster out. Just start taking the dash off starting with removing all the switches and it becomes obvious.

Refer to a Haynes manual - from what i remember from doing it 5 years ago you remove the instrument cluster surround (philips screws), then remove a switch or three and pull the speedo/rev counter cluster forward. I remember removing the steering wheel for access and you have to disconnect the speedo cable and (on some years) the oil pressure pipe before you can pull the cluster forward to get access to the bulbs. This is all a bit hazy so look at a manual or hope someone comes in with more recent details...

make sure its not the dimmer!!!! i found through trial and many errors that the inst pannel dimmer wheel was dodgy..... wiggle and bang!!!

I've no idea how the dimmer works on a Golf. But... if there's a rheostat (and I presume there must be), then they're apt to become corroded. Turn the dimmer wheel back and forwards plenty of times, and you may rub the corrosion off. Works on a W123 (if you have one...)
