I've been trying desperately to sell my immaculate low mileage Rover 827 for the last 2 months. It's a 96 model f/back and I can't even get £1200 for it.Has anybody else struggled with particular makes in the past, and if you did, what did you do in the end? Read more
Hi all - this is more for my mate not me.
My mate has what I think is a B reg Polo which I'm guessing is the mark 1. He was telling me before that when you put the car in neutral, it will stall UNLESS you move the gear lever to the side.
ANy ideas?
Thanks
Adam

I've managed to talk my girlfriend out of her lease agreement with Reg Vardy. She was going to sign up for another 5 years but I've persuaded her to buy rather then lease what she wanted (Renault Megane 1.4 5dr Dynamique) from Motorpoint for £2700 cheaper. Anyone got any good advice before I go ahead with all of this ? If I get this wrong i'm in for a life of eternal torment :-/ Read more
Don't get the Renault!!!
However, if you have to then Ukcarbroker are selling it
for £9,880.
we were thinking about a new motor recently and the fusion 1.4 tdci diesel caught my wifes eye, although my initial comment was (it looks like a van with windows)i am now not sure. The fuel consumption figures look good. any views ? Read more
**no - not well received by the motoring journo's**
Well that's one point in its favour then. And at least you'll have the satisfaction of having made your own mind up.
A while back there was a thread on additives to replace leaded petrol, and Dizzy was querying why my Mark 1 needed an anti-knock additive but his (Mark 2 ?)didn't.
I had remembered I thought that the Mark 1 had more power than a Mark 2, but ascribed it to the wrong reason. You were right, the Mark 2's CR is higher, but according to a very authoritative article by Chris Witor in the latest Six Appeal, the Mark 1's carburation and specifically inlet manifold give it a higher torque and power.
Hence the slightly better performance from the earlier car. He even goes so far as to say that a very slightly modified 2000 can beat a standard 2500, even a PI.
Just thought I'd mention it, in case you hadn't seen the article Dizzy - can't remember which club you belonged to. Read more
I was really trying to tie up the old CR point. So we still don't know why some cars seem to need octane boosters and others don't. >>
Yes, that continues to be a complete mystery to myself. I've been asked by the editor of SIXappeal if I would submit an article for the next issue describing the causes of valve seat recession. I wish I could include an explanation about when octane boosters are required, but I don't have a clue! Maybe that's a question for Chris Witor to have a go at.
Regarding the performance of your 2000 engine, I ran a 1965 2000 auto from 1970 until mid-1975 and was very happy with it. It wasn't a ball of fire but acceleration was adequate and cruising was relaxed and refined. The MkII 2000 auto that I used to service for a neighbour was noticeably slower, so much so that it was not very enjoyable to drive. If you are happy with your MkI 2000 as it is, then I agree that it's best to leave well alone.
We have a pug 306 turbo diesel, 1995, K125 miles, which passed mot emission test last time by narrowest of margins with dire warnings that it might not pass next time! The time is approaching and I wonder if any of you experts can give legal advice on how to help it through the test, apart from the obvious engine oil/filter change. Also, the cambelt has done over 30,000 miles and needs changing. I dont want to tackle this job myself so what do you think would be a fair price to get it changed at an independent gagage? Grandad. Yep, £99inc VAT and a genuine belt.

Where I live it was a bit windy yesterday and for the first time since buying the car, the alarm went off a total of four times in about three hours. Each time I checked it and reset it. On the fourth time I did three things, I shut the interior sunroof screen, I turned the heating controls to exit the floor only, and lastly I removed one of those interior perfume "Trees" which hung on the indicator stalk. Since then "touch wood", it has not happened again. I had also washed it about three hours earlier? Has anyone else had a similar problem? or any ideas.

As some of you may know, I'm a long-term Omega driver - all very dull, sensible and boring so far.
I've got this little urge, though. I've noticed that 5-7yr old Lexus LS400 prices are getting down towards my range, and I've begun to wonder whether I should consider one.
Does anyone have any experience of running one? Are they as phenomenally reliable as they are made out to be? And what kind of real-world fuel economy can I expect? Can my local garage service one?
Or should I just go for another Omega?
Questions, questions.

Don't know anything about Lexuses (Lexii?) - but I'd imagine they're
very competent comfortable cruisers - in fact so comforable / competent
they're likely to send you to sleep!
Ironically, if you like Citroens you'd probably like Lexus. They have that same sort of long legged slightly detached and relaxed feel of the large Citoens only more so.
I also have to say that having owned both an XM and a Xantia and a LS400 I can tell you which marque I'd buy again....
(hint: It's not Citroen!)

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....
I've checked out the garage guide but wondered if anyone knew of a specialist in the Nth Manchester area. My wish list is
Audi knowledge
Good with ECUs
Has access to Audi A6 workshop/wiring manuals
Charges fourpence
If you want the full SP on my nightmare it's in technical, suffice to say I last saw my car on 16 December and it is still in dock Read more
Can anyone advise me on my S3 service intervals? I don't really feel comfortable with Audi's 12-15000 intervals.

If you can do oil chages yourself do an extra oil and filter change between services (6 - 7500 miles) using an Audi filter and sump plug washer and the same oil that is used by your dealer, that way your engine will last and your warranty won't be affected as they know no better.

interview in today's Dly Mail with head of Reg Vardy Group, Sunderland-based which sold £1.75bn of cars in 2003, says it all. One quote from the man: ""It is very different from when I got my first car. Young people buy new cars now, fuelled by the free insurance the makers offer. We can supply insured used cars for £30 a week. The insurance would cost them £30 a week anyway, so they are more or less getting the car for nothing."
