i have a 1.9d renault clio and starts a little ropey but then goes fine. But at only one particular point in the rev range it misfires slightly. What could this point to. Any help is appreciated. Read more

thanks for your reply. Yes the fuel primer did go and i replaced it with another and it is working fine. Also all glow plugs were replaced and are working fine. When starting the car it will fire at the turn of the key but idles a bit erratically until you give it a good reving for a minute. After this at a certain rev range it will continue to idle erractically however a lot less than when just started. When the car has been running for 20 minutes this problem dissappears. Any help is appreciated.

Does anybody know if the French built yaris's are as good as the jap built ones, and where are the 1.3 petrol engines made?. Read more

About 2 years ago I was told by Toyota UK that only the 1.0 Yaris was produced in France and all 1.3 versions were produced in Japan.

My question was prompted by some reports that the 'French' Yaris was giving problems. See also the Car-by-Car breakdown on this site. HJ indicates that the problem is now solved.

AN Other

Some kind soul has smashed the door mirror glass on my 1997 C180, so I have a couple of questions:

1. Is there anywhere anyone knows selling just the mirror glass for a more reasonable price that the £47 demanded by MB?

2. How is it fitted? I'm guessing there's a knack... Is it better to just let Autoglass do it on my insurance (£50 excess, no loss of NCB)?

Very grateful for any help on this one! Read more

AN Other

Thanks Lucy T's friend and others! I'll try the breakers as Eurocarparts don't stock the mirror, and GSF want only £10 less than MB... Much appreciated.

Don't want to depress you all but I understand that most of the country will actually be returning to normal on Monday.
I would like to put in a little tongue in cheek plea for the Xmas break to be for at least a month in future, simply because for those of us who have been working as normal during the break it has been heaven on the roads.
Don't really know why but today appeared to be the quietest day, this morning, where there are normally half mile queues there were about five cars max. This evening, a journey which normally takes 45 minutes to an hour took me 25 minutes, wonderful!

How do you think Scott Adams thought up the wonderful Dilbert?

I never used to like Dilbert, until I joined the present company. Now it is a ritual. (oh, and the MD bears an uncanny resemblence to ours!)
Mad Maxy

Seeing HJ's final instalment of his long-term test of an Avensis D-4D reminded me that I nearly bought one a few months ago. Needed something bigger than a Golf and fancied a used Audi A4 Avant or a Merc C class estate. But a new Toyota, even with worse residuals made more economic sense - lower outlay up front and slightly lower cost of ownership over three years. And that's mainly how SWMBO saw it too.

Test drove all three and quite liked the Toyota, especially as it's got nice standard kit, dripping with airbags and is well finished. Should be reliable too. Even went for another test drive - not the same car as the first - and was prepared to do a deal... but got cold feet on account of some creaks and rattles and the lack of steering feel. Felt that this could be a car that would really irritate me after six months.

Drove straight to the Audi dealer and started a process that ended up with an ex-demo A4 Avant Sport on the drive. The whole car FEELS so much more solid than the Toyota - and I'll even just about forgive its lack of heated mirrors. Dynamically it's fine too.

So do any of you backroomers drive a new Avensis, and how do you like it? And how many of you let such highly qualitative judgments influence your choice of motor?

Note that in the end SWMBO preferred the Audi. And the Avensis is damned ugly, isn't it? Read more

Oh No........

Here's me thinking things might get a little better... I suppose it will be a case of trying all Toyota Main dealers in Essex and Kent then and hoping one will be good enough... That's what I did with the VW and thankfully I managed to find one - but only just. Fortunately, I live in one county and work in another....

I was interested to see in previous threads the discussions concerning Mercedes and the general view that their quality and reliability are not what they used to be. Aprilia commented that the W124, the old E series before the "frogeye" one launched in the mid 90s, was one of the last built to the bullet proof standards that the Merc badge used to represent. My brother in law uses a chauffeur driver from time to time who has a diesel one with well over 200k on the clock and it still looks and sounds excellent. I too have some contact with the automotive industry and a client of mine, a supplier to mercedes, says that he believes they are pulling out all the stops to drive down costs. To meet their demands on price his firm has had to switch production from Germany to a lower labout cost country as well as reduce the specification of the components, not the same as reducing quality, in order to meet their demands. He agrees that newer models and particularly the ones coming through are not to the same standards as earlier models.

So is it a good idea to buy a good but old mercedes? Such as a relatively low mileage W124 with the run-for-ever diesel engine, if there is still such a thing available, or a German built previous model C class rather than a newer model and more expensive Mercedes or a more modern but lesser marque? A close friend of twenty years or more has always bought a new Merc, run it for three years and then repurchased. This time round he is going for the new Honda Accord diesel. The loss of loyal buyers like this must be a cause for concern for a premium priced marque that apparently isnt delivering against the promise.

As a diesel Audi (the poor man's mercedes) driver, 10 years old, 47 mpg and a mere 110k miles, I favour an old but good marque as a way of getting reliability, economy and a degree of prestige. I would be interested in other views on the subject.

Thanks to all for your interesting and informative comments and discussion throughout 2003.

I have a 1993 ce320 coupe with 188,000 miles on the clock. She starts first time every day and doesnt miss a beat. She has a full AMG bodykit and 17" AMG alloys and looks amazing. I have lost count of the admirable looks and comments every time I drive her.

I absolutely love the car and feel a million dollars whenever I drive her.

I think HJ spoke recently of clearing out some of the oldest Back Room contributions, assuming not unreasonably that they would be of no interest to anyone. I bet they would be of interest and I would like to suggest that they be archived as downloadable text files. Even better, the technical ones could be organised by make of car, although that would be icing on the cake, as they would be easily searchable. Read more
