Some kind soul has smashed the door mirror glass on my 1997 C180, so I have a couple of questions:
1. Is there anywhere anyone knows selling just the mirror glass for a more reasonable price that the £47 demanded by MB?
2. How is it fitted? I'm guessing there's a knack... Is it better to just let Autoglass do it on my insurance (£50 excess, no loss of NCB)?
Very grateful for any help on this one!

I don't know if they do yours, but try a large Halfords, they do self-adhesive glasses which are the same as the originals, and with that anti-dazzle cyan tint too. The instructions tell you to stick it over the broken glass, but when this happened on my BMW, I removed the glass, then heated the broken one with hairdryer, and the broken glass came of the plastic backing mount which also had the heater elements in it. I ended up with an original looking heated mirror for a few pounds, and it had the anti-blindspot section too. I don't know mercedes, but the trick to remove BMW and Volvo ones was to use a thin scredriver or similar tool inserted into the underside of the mirror housing, where tehre is a small hole, this could then be used to rotate a bayonet ring about 2cm then the glass would fall out.

One of the mirrors broke on my old C240 once and Merc's charged 18quid and the parts chap came out and fitted it. Iv'e just checked the bill, sad I know but I keep everything related to the cars in special folders.
Are you sure their not trying to sell you the whole mirror assembly.

The mirror glass is held on by plastic claws & a metal "hairclip".The plastic coloured "shell" of the mirror has to slide off before the old glass can be removed.(push complete mirror back against spring action to reveal release tab)You are lucky it is not a photochromic glass, they are approx £150!!!

Have just renewed mine, its quite straightforward if you are car DIY. Heater plug & (abovementioned) claws just require careful but firm application. Mine cost £39 (with discount).
Having read above post am delighted mine not photochromatic...but then would have purchased 2nd. hand from MB breakers.

Thanks for replies! I've pulled the mirror back against the spring action, but I can't see how the plastic cover can be unclipped to slide off - any thoughts on what I should be looking for?
Also, what does a photochromatic mirror look like, and how do I know I haven't got one? Mine is heated, tinted, with a dashed vertical line a few centimetres in from the outside edge.
And finally, any MB breaker recommendations?
Many thanks to all for help!

A photochromatic mirror will automatically darken when bright lights are shone onto it so as not to dazzle you.

Sorry, forgot to mention that a C180 from that year won't have a photochromatic mirror.

ANother. M-B breakers www.mercland.co.uk(Recommended)
www.mercedesparts.co.uk (Currently dismantling W202s)
Expect your mirror is similar to mine, simply ease the old one
out with cloth protected broad spatula.
Offer up old mirror to ascertain correct engagement of claws location(To avoid making mistakes with new item)
Connect heater plug to new item & insert mirror after ensuring that claws are correctly positioned/engaged.
Install new mirror with care, just pressure in claw areas & it will feed in firmly.

Thanks Lucy T's friend and others! I'll try the breakers as Eurocarparts don't stock the mirror, and GSF want only £10 less than MB... Much appreciated.
