I know there's a Golf TDi rally car in existance but I was wondering if a diesel F1 car could get anywhere near a petrol version. Be interesting to find out ? Read more

I believe it did work.
Potentially very well.
Too well actually, so was banned before it took hold and
resulted in cars with power bands the width of a piece
of paper, but kept spinning at optimum revs, making a mockery
of attempts to slow them down.

Arr yes right you are, Williams ran them in the early nineties before they were banned - I knew it had already been done though...

Hmmm Ricardo had a rather interesting looking V10 diesel race engine (based on a Judd F1 unit) at Autosport this weekend so maybe not too far away after all.... Although it was a 4.6 and making 'only' 600bhp, from the power curves shown the characteristics of the engine seemed more like a turbo charged gasoline engine than a traditional diesel, making maximum power at 6kpm with a flatter torque curve. Probably more suited to Lemans than F1 though - not sure how the weight would compare to an f1 engine once all the high pressure pumps are considered and its still way off the power/displacement of current f1 engines.

Had my first damage causing accident in the new car :-(

I had just pulled up at traffic lights in Newcastle when a taxi (one of those big London style ones) screeched to a halt in my boot.

Got out to face the usual "no damage there mate" expression, but it was plain that the bumper is misaligned and has paint damage, god knows what damage behind the scenes.

My friend who was a passenger started snapping at the scene with my disposeable camera that I keep for this sort of thing, whilst I took the driver's details. Got an address, reg no, his name, *no* insurance details as he rents the car off a mate and claims to be insured as a named driver. Got the usual mobile number as well.

I really can't face dealing with insurance companies right now, especially not with a £500 excess! This should of course be possible to claim back.

Can I urge anyone who doesnt carry a camera to buy one now! They are only a few quid, but now I have clear evidence as to the position of the vehicles, prevailing road conditions etc. etc.

Lovely start to the new year :-(

Excellent, Blue. I'm pleased for you.

From what HF tells me, it seems that everything's clicking into place for you right now! ;-)

Take care

Just a word to say try and catch up with some of this event on TV if you haven't already done so. I'm following it on Eurosport. I just wanted to say how much I am in awe at every single competitor on this mammoth event. It is one hell of an event.
If you love driving, even if motorsport itself isn't your bag, just watch some of the action. It's pure undiluted motoring adventure of the old school. Hollywood couldn't dream up better. It's terrific.
And you don't need to know anything about rules, classes, classifications or anything.
Just watch. Read more

whats the rules? classes? types of vehicles?

mmm, I thought that the drink driving courses were more like AA (not the fourth emergency service AA) sessions, where you started 'My name's Bob and my problem is claret.' A friend has recently been on one of these sessions, and he said they are full of white collar middle aged, middle class people. Said they were constantly bullied about their drinking, and the best bit was that he'd made a load of like minded friends with whom to go to the pub after the sessions.

What's the idea of the blue lights shown at night in the cabs of many trucks? They are exactly the colour of emergency vehicles' lights - is it to wind up Plod?

Hi there,

I've been trying to find a video clip to download of the station wagon that some guy called John fitted a Spitfire engine into. I'm sure Jeremy C did an article about it, but a search on the web doesn't turn up much.

I'm pretty sure the car ended up in Malta at some point. Its been around for so long there must be video out there....

Can anyone help?

If anyone is interested in the Meteor engined SD1, IMO the spiritual successor of The Beast, there are video clips of it here. The first one is great! Starts off sounding like a tractor then changes to WW2 fighter when revved up!!!

Mods (DD really),

Can't you see if Stephen can add a STICKY post facility for you guys so an announcement for something like the Volvo Poop-Up can stay at the top for whatever period you judge useful.

It would stop circumstances that seem to annoy such as far0n posting about it when perhaps he missed the original long post being anywhere near the top of the page during his infrequent visits.

It would be far better than the separate Admin section that no-one reads.

Just a thought.

OK. Message received, so will look into adding this at some stage.
Thanks for this kind of useful input.
As for the Volvo pop-up - I have now mentioned the problem of this to the ad agency that serves these and they will try to:
1) sort out the problem with the Mac - that once the ad hits, nothing on the page works!
2) make sure that you can get close it down if it is in the way.

Cheers

Sigh,

This has been mentioned many many times now; there is even a dedicated thread to air your views in about the Volvo Advert, without starting yet another thread about it.

If you\'re using MS Internet Explorer, then

PRESS FUNCTION KEY F5 TWICE

And yes, I am SHOUTING as no one seems to listen, no matter how many times it\'s been mentioned.

Any further comments on pop ups, will simply be deleted. I can\'t be bothered moving any more comments to the thread that was already started. Whinge away in that thread if you like, but please refrain from starting new ones.

Again you have been told often enough to either email the moderators or HJ himself about site issues, and not discuss the matters here. Full details of which are in the Announcements Forum.

Isn't Dave nice and polite. I, however, deleted the rest of this thread as well.

Maybe it's be done to death. Maybe not.

I like the purity of rwd and I'm sure it's faster from A-B assuming dry tarmac and the driver has the skill to utilise the oversteer.

I dislike fwd except in very wet/snowy conditions, when I like the reasssurance of losing it slowly!

Brill,

Completely agree, Subaru Outback in Oz for 3 years, never took it past the limit but the extra surefootedness on dirt, gravel or wet roads was a real bonus. Plus the economy was much better than a true 4*4.

In respect of Arty's comment, yes the RWD sedans (Falcon, Commodore and Magna) are popular in Oz but they are fine in the cities and on sealed roads but go anywhere more remote and they are not so common, we had them as observatory cars and they were hated...poor grip at rear on damp roads/mud, poor ground clearance, poor visibility past A pillars and required a front end rebuild for the slightest Roo strike.
