Some of you may have seen my thread in Discussion about a friend's car accident a couple of days ago. One thing that has occurred to me is that although the car effectively "bounced" from the left to the right side of the road, clipping another car with his rear OS wing and rolling over in the process, not one airbag deployed even though the car has front, side and curtain airbags. The lack of curtain airbag deployment in particular meant that my friend sustained both laceration and internal injuries to his hand, arm and shoulder - he was not protected from the broken glass of the side window or from the road surface. I appreciate that this is not the place to receive legal advice regarding any potential action against the manufacturer, but from a "technical" point of view, shouldn't the curtain airbag have deployed due to the car rolling over?

Hello
Hope someone can help, I have a 2000 VW Golf TDI and the lights behind the heater controls have stopped working today, i have tried banging it (Technical I Know!) but they wont come on, does anyone know if there is 1 LED/ bulb or whether this is an electrical fault, if there were a few bulbs it would be unlikely they all went together?
Looking forward to your help!

Jan.2003 - renewed my insurance (fully comp) through a large national broker.
July - suffered £1000 collision damage (barrier set in road which had been clear 5 hrs earlier, dusk, damp road, long story), no other vehicle or road users involved. Submitted claim, work done by local bodyshop instead of the 'recommended repairer'.
August - car ready, £200 excess paid (3 weeks wait for new wing while France goes on holiday).
Dec. - broker sends renewal reminder, premium £10 LESS than last time. What's going on? (There is no explicit mention of NCB protection, which is - was - 9 years).
Jan.2004 - I renew via internet. Documents come today, same insurer, same policy number, no record of any claim in 2003.
Should I draw this to the broker's attention? Are they technically 'my insurer'? My ultimate insurers clearly shouldn't need informing, as they dealt with the claim. Read more
v - it cost me £60 to cancel the HSBC policy, but I more than recovered that by taking the LlT quote. At the same time I saved £26 by switching from RAC cover (which I have had for 30 yrs) to the Green Flag as part of the package. I think we have called RAC 3 or 4 times: I flattened a battery by leaving lights on during the day, clutch cable broke on 205 DT, and wife ran out of diesel when fuel sensor in tank misbehaved. Maintenance pays off.
How does one get to,and test the glow plugs on a Vectra,as one of mine has gone down according to a garage that is repairing my car?
Unfortunately, without testing them all themselves, they can't tell me which one it is,and as my bill to repair is already big enough,I may do it myself, and replace the offending one if it's as easy as my Cavalier was to get them out.
I know they only come on when the temp is cold on these engines, but it's better to act now rather than wait until it may be too late. Read more
just test them by removing the caps and carefully fix a piece of wire to batt pos ond touch each top of the glow plugs, spark means that its good but its best to replace all of them ngk make good ones
to remove caps use long nose plyers and just squeeze the sides and pull or two flat blade screwdrivers
on the down side might be glow time relay easy to replace but expensive tech two test will tell u which
hope this helps

Hi all,
Just a few questions to ask; I will be going to live with my girlfriend in Hong Kong for 6-12months or better for good! only if i can sort out a job there, my main concerns are:
1) My car is still on finance, i have at least another 12months to pay it off
2) The car first MOT is in April and also at the same time is my insurance
I think i will payoff my car before i leave, just want to know whether is was legal to leave my car without MOT and insurance until i come back to the UK, ideal i would like to keep the car just incase things don't work out overthere in terms of a full time job.
cheers all

Depending where you leave it, not having insurance could be risky - accidental damage, theft etc. Not sure about the legality though.
I own an H reg 318i and whenever I do any serious mileage (100miles+) if I get stuck in traffic at my destination I find that the clutch judders quite considerably. This happens in all weather conditions. The problem always goes away when the car has cooled down and I haven't had any problems with the clutch slipping. Is it time for a new clutch or could it be oil getting on to the plates? Anyone else had the same problem? Read more
I had the same problem on my 93 318iS. Local indipendent specialist advised that this is a recognised problem on cars of this period. 2hours crawling/juddering along on the M25 in 90 degrees convinced me to have the clutch replaced. New clutch has been in for 3 years with no further problems.
I bought a new car earlier this week. The chap said private in autotrader.co yet he'd taken it in px for another vehicle...
Anyway, I filled in my address on the blue bit of the log book, we both signed it. I took the green bit, and he left the blue bit in the car with me.
Is it my responsibility to send this off? (Obviously I shall, as I don't want an expensive car without any proper V5.) Read more
No No no. Sounds like the guy is a trader. If he bought it off someone there is no garuantee any bits of the reg document have been detached or sent off at all. Also, some aucitons will hand you the registration document in full when you purchase a car.
If you have bought the car, and have been given the v5, fill it in and send it off. You then keep the v5/2 in case you need to tax the car in the time between sending the v5 off and receiving your new registration document. It is in the intersts of the seller to send it off, but if the "owner" you "bought" the car from has not been registered with the DVLA in anyway he won't care less- hence he is quite happy to just leave it in the car.
The question still remians: if the "owner" advertised as private, yet was not named on the v5, how do you know they were the owner. The V5 is not proof of ownership.
Think about it, blokes a bit of a geezer. sees some old git with the car in autotradeer, goes round, haggles, makes him an offer, gives him the cash , in it a load of dodgy twenties and says "im a trader you give me that and i send it off". Pressures the poor old bloke, he hands it over and takes his cash. Trader drives home in his new motor, and sticks it back in the trader. Rips off the red bit and chucks it in the bin. Thursday comes, billy sees the ad, buys the car, and gets the rest of the reg document. No record of the trader owning the car.
Basically if the bloke is a trader, and can prove it and is honest in his advert etc, probably all ok. If you buy private, they should have all the reg document, unless they can prove they have only had the car for a very short period (wonder why). Their address should be on the V5 and should be the address at which you view and purchase the car from (ideally).
No name on V5 pretending to be private = dodgy.
Changing plugs on New Beetle 1.6 (same as Golf etc 1.6) - what\'s the best plugs ? Copper ones fitted from new \'went off\' well before due date of 40k - more like 25K or so - platinum/iridium/Yttrium presumably better ? Is the make of plug critical (as in build-quality) - so are NGK/Denso/Bosch best bet ? Read more

Hi,
My Toyota Corolla 2000 makes a sort of grinding noise when in gear, but out of gear the engine is its usual quiet self.
My Toyota dealer reckons that my the gearbox has a worn bearing(s) (output?).
Could the fault be a clutch related, though? I wonder, as the car is now at 110,000 miles. Anything else?! Read more
Hi,
I know that this discussion ended a few years ago but hoping you would be able to tell me whether it was your gearbox or clutch? I have a 2002 corolla with the exact same problems and symptoms as you describe, and want to avoid paying out for a new clutch if its the gearbox, and vice versa!...

Side airbags are usually deployed by detection of sudden air pressure changes in the front doors, which fall within the parameters of the data taken from test side impacts. If your crash did not meet these requirements the bags would bot have deployed. You would probably have more of a chance for redress if they did deploy, but that's just my humble opinion, as I didn't see the car or the crash.
