Just been out doing the rounds and cane accross a beautiful 96 Omega 2.5 V6 CD. One owner from new and about 120 000 miles. The car has a genuine Vauxhall service history even down to the original invoice. New tyres, and 6 months tax and MOT. The car drives as new and is very quiet. Met silver and undamaged. No doubt these cars are worthless now but this is a lovely car. The garage will take offers and best one by Friday noon gets the car. I'm tempted to offer £1k. Am I mad? Read more

I get a very exact 31mpg. This is on largely motorway runs; I record them by the thousand miles or so (every two or three tanks full). The worst was around 28mpg, which was mostly town driving, journeys under about six or seven miles.

If your garage lets it go for £1,000 and it's as good as you say, grab it with both hands.

Yes, I do believe Vauxhall have stopped them now. Tragic.

I know there have been various threads on lights recently, and about upgrading bulbs etc.

However, I think its a timely reminder that in this weather, we should clean ALL our lights before EVERY journey as this could make the difference that you require from your lights. A packet of the cheapest baby wipes kept in the car will give enough moisture to clean dirt off them.

Even if you are setting off in broad daylight, who is to say that 15 mins along the road you won't hit a blanket of fog?
Just my thoughts for what they are worth. Read more

I'm nearing the end of a lengthy rebuild of a vintage car that has been SORNed.

Unfortunatly the original exhausts do not fit, so I will need to get new ones made. I will need to push it a short distance on the highway in order to load and unload it from the trailer, pre getting a MOT.

Car will not be a mechanically propelled vehicle, as I will leave the drive chains off. I'm rather assuming it would be a good idea to leave the number plates off as well - since I do not think there a requirement to have plates on non powered vehicle.

Historically I've found DVLC are fairly good if there is no intent to defraud, and in this case, as I really mean vintage by the proper definition (ie pre 1 Jan 1931) the car is tax exempt, the recent excitements on this subject perhaps indicate a change of tack.

What think the legal eagles?

Late last month I put my Golf VR6 into the Vauxhall dealer around the corner from me. I asked them to replace the rear number plate, because the old one was stained and would be an MOT failure item. When I collected the car I saw that they had not replaced the plate exactly as it was before, because the metal screw heads were showing as there were no yellow caps on them. I asked about this and they said "they don't do them like that any more, and new Vauxhalls are like that." Noticing also that the number plate wasn't completely flat, I left it at that.

This morning I unscrewed the plate to fit new screws with caps. I was horrified to find that the fitter had not used the original fixing points but had drilled new holes through the metal, bare-metal holes that can rust. They have therefore damaged the car with no authorization to do anything so radical. It was all the more stupid because the new plate could have easily been glued to the rubber collars protruding from the original fixing points. Before I come down on them like a ton of bricks, I thought I'd air the matter on this board to see whether anyone thinks I'm being unreasonable. Read more

sorry, I'd never heard of a VR6 Golf. Having looked at autotrader (do you really need 2.8l in a Golf...) a 7 year old one might cost 4-5k, so be worth 3-4k trade in if you're lucky. It is an oldish car, and I really don't think it's worth giving yourself a heart attack over, though I can understand that you never want to part with it, and that it's worth much more to you than these numbers, and that it's a much nicer car than the ones I've found etc. etc. etc.

My wife has been disabled in a rear end shunt and can no longer turn her head to the left, or rotate her upper body very well to compensate. Reversing is a problem, and the specialist professional disability advisers can only recommend additional mirrors (they say this is the hardest disability to help people with). These fall off the windscreen anyway (the sticky pads cannot take the extra weight).

But in these days of small covert cameras and Nissan Primeras with reversing TV images (she doesn\'t want as big a car as the Primera), does anyone know if such items can be sourced and retrofitted on cars?

Thaks for any help anyone can give. Read more

Many thanks for the replies. I'll check out the local Partco/Serck option and the web site suggested.

Would I be correct in my assumption that now would be a better time to be buying at auction rather than in January?

My thinking being that nobody wants to buy a car close to Christmas, and traders dont want to buy cars to have sitting around... Read more

Now on my second car bought through an auction agent; first one two years ago, last one two weeks ago.

Can't really fault the service; just gave the guy a description of the cars that I wanted after arranging a few test drives at local dealerships to try out the relevant models/years. When something came up at auction he gave me a call a few days before the sale and I gave a conditional yes to buy.

First car was a '98 Saab 9-3 TiD SE with all the bits (Thanks Honest John for the info on your site, have not had more that a couple of minor niggles on the car since I bought it). Got about 20% of the dealer price, probably more. Second car was a MCC Smart Passion. Again, no problems. You just have to trust that they are acting in your best interests; I did and was not disappointed.

Depends how much info you need and if you want compensation if it goes wrong. I used www.carwatchuk.com/ when I bought mine. Was 9.99 last year, but now 15 quid. Missing is outstanding finance - the hpi/equifax outfits charge the extra for this.

I've had a couple of freebie checks done by a largish dealer for cars that have had nothing to do with them - possily in the hope something would show up and then I'd be a punter for him.

With the centralising of A&E departments to large specialist hospitals, to my mind, it is even more important to have good directional signs to these sites.
Everybody including emergency services are having to travel further with patients to such facilities.

Surely it is essential that proper standard directional signs are deployed in the most appropriate places. I see plenty of new signs saying "Hospital NOT A& E" so someone gets new signs erected.

Who does one SHOUT at to get this sorted out?

Examples.
Chichester. A significant tourist area so there are many drivers, often foreign visitors, unfamiliar with the area.
From the A27, the major road in the area, there is a good large red A & E sign pointing to the town. All other signs are just small ones with black lettering on the usual white background but all mixed up with other directional signs on the many roundabouts.
A tip. If you unfortunately need to go there from the A27 then follow the larger brown tourist sign with a mask on it directing you to the theatre.

Southampton. I gave directions to a friend on a non urgent visit to her son.
M27, A33, A35 then you are bound to see signs cos its walking distance. I identified the route etc. etc. from several maps and printouts supplied.
She reported back ?not easy to find the hospital and the ambulance taking her son there, just 40 miles from Poole, had difficulty finding it.?

Rant not over. I am not ranting at my friends on the forum but I do want to rant at those ******** driving a desk who I hope can fix the problem. If they went into the real world with their eyes open we might get them to act.

I stand (well, sit) corrected. I didn't realise that Ormskirk treated adults as well.

I know well the traffic problems that occur on the A570 on a summer's day. Having said that, an ambulance would have one hell of a job getting from Southport to Ormskirk at tea-time on such a day.

I guess in the end it really does come down to money and the fact that merging Southport and Ormskirk hospitals means that one of the towns is going to lose out.

Perhaps we'd better stop there as this has little to do with the subject in hand. I can also hear the mods lurking with their magic scissors....

Cheers
