I hope someone can help here because this has got very expensive.
Coming back off my holls yesterday my trip computer was showing around 16/20 mpg instead of 29/35mpg ,i checked the range setting on a full tank and that was showing about 200 less miles than normal.
After running the car empty the trip computer was shown to be correct,I took the air filter out and this seemed to rectify the fault for about 20 mins then it returned
The engine seems to running ok its a carlton 3000 gsi
I would be interested to see what you all think
Cheers Read more

the consumption had dropped by about 200 miles a tankfull, but over
the last few days it appears to have gone back to
normal...very strange!!!

You may have been victim to a temorary blockage in your air intake.

It could have been anything like a leaf, or a wine lable left on those French roads!

I remember when my Pug had a garage service, the mechanic left the slip of paper that tells you how to fit the air filter in the filter. That caused no end of problems for a while. I took the air filter out just to check it for elimination and found it!

Driving down the motorway yesterday minding my own business, noticed a donk in a gte doing the normal boy racer thing, tailgating, weaving in and out of traffic etc, passes me but pulls into middle lane. Cautiously I overtake and the donk pulls straight out, I hit the brakes hard and swerve to avoid, luckily there is a big space between lane 3 and the barrier or I would have been a goner. We touched, nice big white paint scratch down my wing, lump out of the passenger door.
Pull into middle lane, indicate to go off at next junction, donk slows down too, as I pull off he floors it and is gone, no way am I going to catch him.
Question 1 - Is there any point in reporting to the Police?, in fact should I?, do I have too?, I suspect he will have no insurance etc, doubt if the motor is even registered in his name.
Question 2 - anyway of tracing him (in the unlikely event that the motor is registered), I got the reg ?
Luckily mine is a company motor so I am not going to cop it for repairs but would like to get some kind of revenge!
Cheers

(Sorry, I incorrectly posted this in the discussion section.)

Does anybody know why my 1997 Holden (or Opel in Europe) Barina stalls when I put the clutch down to change gears? This happens very rarely (like once in two months) and happens on any occasion. It happens when I'm stepping up or down a gear, whether I'm going downhill, uphill or on a plain, or when I'm going fast or slow. But once I engage the gears the engine kicks in once again after a second or two. Still I am scared when one day the engine never kicks back. :( It's also scary because once it happened when I was going round a corner. Of course the power steering went out, so I almost went up the curb.

Thank's in advance for your help.

Yes, I am not throttling when it stalls. Nothing happens with the revs, and the car acts normally in every way except on these rare occassions when it stalls. There is nothing to indicate something wrong with the car. It is a real mystery to me.

I am wanting to stay, at short notice, for just one night on south side of London..not too far away from Reigate and Caterham. I can only think of Travelodge (they have a handy site at Dorking) but there must be other chains that I cannot remember.

I would prefer not to be just off the main runway at Gatwick!

Suggestions would be appreciated. Many thanks in anticipation. Read more

yes henry, you're right to point out that "resident" power stopped the McDonalds unlike at New Malden and then Surbiton.

It's sad that we take it for granted that pubs WILL be knocked down, the suburb of Hinchley Wood had a purpose built centre with attractive shops (still there and actually mainly still selling stuff!) with that pub as its focal point.

pubs have taken the punter for a ride for too long as well, the new boss lady at Eldridge Pope is trying to "unconcept" her pubs and turn them into individual places again...and the Hinchley Wood had got grubby since its last concept relaunch some time in the 90s...

then again, maybe "use it or lose it" is the theme!

My 2001 Saab 2.0 lpt has had a problem with gearbox selectors since new, once the selectors were changed then the complete box replaced, still problems, then 50,000 they changed the box again and the clutch, now 62,000 and out of warranty the selectors are sticking again. It drives fine for a while then you cant get it into 3rd or 4th, always going upward in the box, then the next chang its fine again, may be for another 60 - 100 miles, then it does it once, then inthe next five changes it will do it every time, then not for another 200 miles.
Apart from flogging the car, has anyone got any ideas? Read more

I think it is fairly well-known that these gearboxes are troublesome. If I were you I would take the car to an independent SAAB specialist rather than the dealer - independent guy is likely to be a bit more clued-up to dealing with these than the franchised dealer.
Could also try a good gearbox rebuilding company for advice.

hoping someone can help! am working on a polo to bring up to scratch and sell on. The manifold is cracked and am therefore changing it - however, going to undo one of the manifold-head nuts today, and by just touching (and im not exaggerating here!) the nut, the stud sheared, obviously already weakened and just waiting to be touched. anyway, some of the stud has come away with the nut.

how do i go from here in trying to put a new stud in? ive used bolt extractors before but am i right in thinking you cant extract the stud in the same way, as its not meant to come out?! if so how is it remedied? is it a head-out job?

thanks

Nice one Steve!

Thanks for getting bck to us with the results. It's nice to know that our wild guesses work! :)

Now we know how you did it, we are better prepared should any of us hit a similar problem.

Thanks again for the update and above all - WELL DONE!

Due to the recent hot weather the A/C did not seem to be working, so I had it checked. The system was recharged, I was told this was necessary. After a few miles it was apparent the A/C was not working. I took the car back to the garage and it is now necessary to change the A/C unit at a cost of about £570 incl VAT !!! Apparently it has a slight leak and will not hold pressure and as it is a throw away unit it cannot be repaired. The car has been serviced always by Ford and has never had the A/C serviced? Yet now I was told it should be re-charged every two years.

Any comments please?

Did whoever re-charged your A?c not do a leak check for you before they re-charged your system?

My Escort's A/C gave up in the middle of August this year (hottest week) I called an A/C specialist called Andrew Doxey from the mansfield/shirebrook area. He performed the leak check and was able to tell me where the leak was so I could get it repaired before re-charge.

Also you can as previously stated by one of your other replies run your A/c through winter to provide drier air in the cabin and also demist quicker.

I have just had my VW Golf 60.000 serviced by a local VW dealer - which is fine, I can swallow a £200 servicing bill. What I'm not happy with is a quote for £1020 for extra work which needs to be carried out. The list includes Cambelt & water pump, Front & rear disks and and pads, wipers, rear washer jet replacement and re-welding of centre exhaust mount. Does anyone know of a reliable VW enthusiast who could do the job cheaper?? I live in the Isleworth, Twickenham, Richmond area. Cheers. Paul Read more

Give Hometune a ring, in my experience they give good service at a fraction of the dealer price, they will also come to you wherever you are!

i've got around 5k to spend, and am looking for a hatchback/saloon that looks quite sporty but not too dear on the insurance. Any ideas?

So far i've come up with the megane or xsara coupe's, but there must be more.
