My L-reg Nissan Micra starts normally from cold, but once warmed up becomes a nightmare to get going. The engine turns over but just will not fire - this happens when the engine is warmed up and is even worse in hot weather. It feels like the engine is flooding.
My local garage (ex-Nissan dealer) have tried everything they can think of to no avail including fitting another throttle housing (a second-hand one). Otherwise the vehicle runs OK. Any ideas? Read more
I've noticed over the last week or so that my car felt a little looser than normal. Nothing too scary, but just not quite right.
Then last night I took a sharpish left corner quite fast and almost had the steering wheel yanked out of my hand!
It felt as though I was driving over a pot hole repeatedly with the wheel pulling even tighter and then releasing and then pulling again. All repeating at about 3 times a second for 2 or 3 seconds!
The problem is only on sharp left turns. Straights and right turns are fine. Even gentle lefts are OK.
I've taken both front wheels off but could see nothing wrong. There is no excessive movement in either wheel.
Someone at work has suggested that it might be either wheel bearings or a loose tie rod. Surprisingly enough, I had new tie rods fitted not that long ago by my local Audi dealer when they were doing the tracking.
Is there an easy way for a non techo like myself to check the tie rods? If it is them, can I expect my dealer to fix it for free?
Thanks in advance

Thank goodness it's OK and we didn't get some wag, in response to "The problem is only on sharp left turns. Straights and right turns are fine. Even gentle lefts are OK."
saying you should just not turn sharply left!
Who'd be daft enough to think that, I wonder?
After reading threads where people have handed back lemon cars after half the HP has been paid, I was just wondering does this blight their credit record? Anybody know? Read more
Handing back seems to be catching on! I wonder if eventually the HP companies will create their own lemon list which they won't lend on.
Don't know too much about car - seen one offered locally on an E plate @ £350. Read some of the previous technical problems about car, this one is in good nick (very minor rusting around wheel arch)and has done 112,000 which I gather is not too much for such a car.
Would you lot (with an infinitely greater knowledge than me) buy it? I need a car to last at least 6 months trouble free.
Many thanks

I thought that plod took a very dim view of people using GPS speedtrap warning systems, so what will they make of it potentially being built into the car, as reported in todays news article www.honestjohn.co.uk/news/index.htm?news_id=1113
And what will the French Police make of it? I thought that it was illegal to have such a thing over there, or is that just radar detectors? Read more
People seem to forget that the speed limit in force on any road is supposed to indicate the MAXIMUM speed allowable in normal conditions. Many people, however, seem be under a different impression and drive as if the limit set indicates the MINIMUM speed allowable IRRESPECTIVE of weather and traffic conditions!
I don't want to drive at the maximum speed, I just want to know what the maximum speed I am allowed to drive at.
At the moment when driving down dual carriageways in strange towns I seem to have two options:
1. Drive at 30 mph irrespective, concentrating on my driving and annoying everybody else around (who then do stupid things to get past).
2. Attempt to work out what the speed limit is on this 100 yard section of road is, because it it is probably not the same as the last 100 yards.
To be honest I am tending to go with option 1 more and more as I simply cannot be bothered with the stress that option 2 causes. Although you do tend to see some interesting hand signs when doing 29 in a 40, 50, 60, or even 70 limit.
Is the main man likely to be putting in an appearance? If so I'll bring along my early editions of 'Motoring Tips' for signing! Read more
Indeed ? on both counts!...
From January tube fares will be increased by 25%. Buses in the "outer" zone will see an increase of a mere 43%, although buses in the "central" zone will remain unchaged for those using the Oyster smartcard pre-paid ticket scheme. Ken apparently wants us to use this pre-paid scheme to reduce queues at tube stations and speed up bus services.
I nust confess to living in London and never having heard about this Oyster card (I suppose if I took the bus more often then I might but then they are so unreliable...)
Anyway, I would have thought if you want people to take public transport then increasing fares at 10 times the rate of inflation is not the way to do it. I suppose that this is tied in with his tax scam (Congestion Charge, which I forgot to pay yet again so more fines!!!) not making as much money as he thought and also the fact that the company that runs it takes most of the money raised for themselves. Spot on V-Man - use the Oyster card and it remains at 70p which has to be one of London's great bargains.
I've been having a few problems with intermittent stalling when coming to a stop or slowing down. I understand that the most likely problem would be with a faulty idle speed controller or a vacuum leak.
I've cleaned out the isc and air intake piping and checked for a leak to no avail.
Could a faulty O2 sensor cause similar problems?, as I know they tend to crash often on Peugeot 306s

Tried turning on the lights and all at idle, the tick over did slow quite a bit.
The o2 sensor checked out OK, at least thats eliminated, so have to check the idle controller.
Has anyone got a cheap one spare!!??
1.25 Zetec 1997, 94,000 miler. Sudden chugging down motorway and loss of speed, replaced fuel filter for the first time and used injector cleaner. Stopped all the chugging- 90% better.
Problem is when blipping accelerator quickly from idling, revs seem to do the opposite and die down for longer than usual say half a second, picks up after the initial air intake. Worse when cold, but once going along it's virtually unoticeable. revs die if the accelerator is pressed too quickly at low revs. Speed dies/limits when accelerating through 4500rpm then drops to 65-70mph and it's fine again (been doing this for few months while accelerating through exactly 4500, so high it's never been a major prob, suspected filter).
Just renewed badly worn Plugs for NGK's, Bosch Leads, Fuel & air filters. Absolutly no different!
Is this a dodgy air mass sensor. Very consistant fault never cuts out and is drivable if I take it easy pulling away with enough rev! (1500)
Any ideas whats holding me up ??
Thanks in advance, Neil Read more
It is possible that the airflow meter is causing the problem but I'd go for a lazy O2 sensor at that mileage. If you were to put one onto a 'scope you would probably find its switching rate was down to about 10Hz. Using the injector cleaner may have cleaned up its act a bit but these sensors must be viewed as a consumable item at around the 40k mark depending on how the vehicle has been used. i.e. shopping and school runs will kill it far, far quicker than pounding the motorway.

Simplicate and add lightness!
Good evening,
I would like, if I may, to tell you a tale of woe about a certain 1992 1.7D Astra. Yes, that one....
I used it to visit my kids oop north at the weekend and, despite the problem I am about to relate, was a joy to drive - no, seriously!
I came across stationary traffic on the M6 just south of Birmingham. The temperature needle climbed faster than you can say "antidisestablishmentarianism". Generally the temp gauge only shows just above cold, and during this traffic jam climbed to 90 degrees.
I suspect a dodgy thermostat. Where is it located on the 1992 1.7D lump? I could do with taking it out and testing it before I troll down to my local bona garage (with resident mechanics Julian and his friend Sandy). And if it needs a new one, how much are they? I am (perhaps naively) thinking that if I can take the old one out then I can put a new one in?
Cheers (as always) for your help.

Hi Andy,
Thanks for your post.
Yes, the BR is fantastic!
>>She seems to think that I should spend the weekend of our >>wedding anniversary with her!
How incredibly selfish of her! ;) Surely a BR meeting is the perfect venue for a romantic anniversary celebration?
Seriously, after the roaring success that I'm hoping September 7th will be, there will be many more meetings in future. Look forward to seeing you at one of them, and in the meantime have a very enjoyable anniversary weekend.
Better return to topic - Rob has not had a chance to check anything yet, but we'll report back asap.

This is a known problem. I think there's a modified harness for the coolant temp sensor - ask your dealer.
