Hi,

I am thinking of purchasing an Volvo C70 T5, since I do a lot of motorway driving and like a good value car. As they seem to be around 10-13k for a 2yr old with 30k miles on. And I currently do around 25-35k PA and my company I work for give me 13.5p per mile.

My question is do LPG converstions work well with turbo cars?, A lot of discussitions I have seen are on V8 or V6's.

Is there any reasons why a high pressure turbo sould not be converted?

Also I belive that there is a new generation III, were performance and fuel economy is not lost?

I have also spoken to my insurance company who have put a very little extra cost on this car been converted to LPG.

Many thanks

Hi,

And thanks to those who posted to my ealrier question. But I thought I would inform you of my decision.

After speeking too a couple of firms and asking probing questions - I have come to a decison.

Apprently the V70 is an approved car for the powershift grant, which give grants to convert cars to become more GREEN!.

The V70 t5 is on this list, however it seems to be quite a new model. I have also found a Guarage that has converted V70 t5 in the past. Which is virtually a c70.

So I am able to convert a C70 T5, and there are no isses it been a High pressure turbo.

The converstion cost £1100, VAT with a government approved LPG gaurage.

I own a T5 estate 2.3 2000 w reg. Yesterday the cooling fan would not stop running even when the ignition off, and it eventually drained the battery. The only way to stop it is to pull the plug apart. Does anybody know how to fix it without taking it to a expensive garage? Thanks.

Post amended. Posting entirely in CAPS is thought to be bad manners (it\'s a way of expressing bad temper because it looks as if you\'re shouting). Read more

It's probably the cooling fan relay, positioned up by the top of the fan shroud, to the left hand side (as you look into the engine bay). It's about 1" wide by 2" long, with a few good thick wires going into it. It also controls the half speed function for when the a/c is on. I think if you remove it, it has a sort of wiring diagram on it.

Just saw on narrowboat forum that cheapest diesel is 22p/litre at Turners Garage on Shropshire Union Canal. Most expensive was 32p/litre.
Nice to see the government supporting the holiday industry whilst hammering the road transport with excessive taxes and regulations!

MX-5 or MGTF - which would you recommend??

I have £13,000 to spend, and a W reg Ibiza Vibe 1.4 with 27,000 miles, in good condition which I believe is worth about £4100 privately...

I have seen a limited edition 1.8i Nevada list price £16,995 which the dealer will not negotiate on the price, although will inc tax, full tank of petrol and mats, he has also offered me £3600 for my ibiza.

I also have the option of a 20% employee discount on an MGTF 135

I want to keep the car for 3 years @ 15k miles/year, sooo....

Is the TF or the Nevada the better car?
What's a realistic price for my Ibiza trade/private?
Or would I be better off looking for nearly-new car as my other half keeps suggesting?!

Please heeeelp!!

Thanks

Did anyone else read the letter in today's Sunday Telegraph which blames manufacturers for sacrificing safety/stability of cars by introducing fwd as a cost-cutting exercise? I'm not sure I fully understand the thrust of the argument but it seems to hinge upon the fact that fwd cars are harder to control in emergency situations due to the steering being adversely affected by collisions.

Any thoughts?

The original Golf GTI's massive success had a lot to do
with it being very well behaved under stress.

Just as well it was really, the brakes were frighteningly bad when you first used them in anger, ok when you got used to the lack of stopping power!

Those old Mexicos and Capris would have put a large number
of joyriders (and bystanders?) in hospital or worse.

specially the 3.0 capris - hairy or what, wedged one sideways under railway bridge once - the bridge was on a bend. Lesson 1 learned - it stays damper under bridges!

Hello room.

Considering getting my first car. Must have automatic gearbox.
A true automatic, not easytronic, cvt, speedgear etc.

Must be cheap to buy, fuel and insure if possible. Not too bothered about performance, image etc.

I have made a shortlist below:

Seat Arosa 1.4 S Auto.
VW Lupo 1.4 E Auto.
VW Polo 1.4 S Auto.
Skoda Fabia 1.4 Classic Auto.

(All above same engine and box, I have heard there have been problems with the above)

Vauxhall Corsa 1.4 Auto
Vauxhall Astra 1.6 8v Auto

My current favourite is the new Daihatsu Charade 1.0 EL Automatic, £6700. Which comes with excellent kit and is nice to sit in, spacious.

Are Daihatsu's any good ? I know the Sirion is similar but has a slightly different box. Can anyone comment on whether they are ok, reliable etc. And whether they have good auto boxes.

Or can anyone recommend a good, smooth, reliable automatic other than those mentioned above? I guess the Yaris is favourite although they are a little dear, for me at the minute.

I "potentially" disagree with DavidHM's comment that the Fabia would be especially thirsty. It is the old original Skoda 1.4 8v pushrod engine that is the thirsty one. The auto uses the 1.4 16V 75bhp engine which is the same one as in my Octavia. This engine has proved very econmical (currently 45mpg+) and suprisingly tourquey at low revs for its size. I would imagine it would suit a "small" automatic car, I have not driven the fabia auto though.

I\'m sure this has already been discussed, but I can\'t find it now, so apologies in advance.

I\'ve just taken delivery of a new Zafira and am not overly impressed with the air-con.

At its coldest, on recirculate, although significantly colder than outside, it just doesn\'t seem cold enough. In other cars I have driven, it\'s practicaly unbearable on the coldest setting.

How cold should the air be entering the cabin? Read more

Hairy Hat Man

So, I mentioned the perceived problem when the 'van', as I call it, went in for a few minor fixes at 6 months old.
'Nothing wrong with the air-con' they said
'On what basis do you come to that conclusion' I say
'It's blowing cold air' they say
'It's -2 degrees outside' I say 'of course it's blowing cold air'

At yearly service (and 24 degress outside) I mention the air-con again. They re-gas it and now it's lovely and cold, just how it should have been a year ago.

I suspect (as I've read elsewhere) that it was under gassed from the factory.

p.s. Do I win a prize for updating a thread over a year since I posted it?

I drive a turbo diesel and really appreciate the 'ooomph' that its high torque level provides but.... could someone explain the difference between power and torque in layman's terms? They each seem to be important but are obviously not the same thing. Read more

Aha - thanks all. So I chose appropriately when I bought a turbodiesel, for I have too much mechanical sympathy to happily rev the knickers off a car. At 4000 RPM or so I reach for the next gear.

Anybody had any problems replacing the standard xsara radio cassette with another brand (blaupunkt)cd player? Read more

But that won't get you exciting features such as CD Text, graphic equilisers, flashing lights, better amplifier, high pass filters etc.

I remember seeing someone who sells identical changers for some models, cannot remember if the Xsara was one of them, nor which age stereos it worked with.

Many audio shops will sell Sony Sound on Top to add a cd changer to your present head unit, I think they were about £200.

I personally prefer the decent head unit and change speakers option to get sound for a decent price.
