Yoby

Does anyone else get irritated by people who chuck their cigarettes out of the window / sunroof when you are travelling behind them. I had this on the M3/M27 sliproad yesterday. I know it might seem silly, but I always wonder (and am alarmed by) the thought of what could happen if it gets lodged somewhere in or under the car close to a fuel line. Especially at night you can see the amount of sparks etc. that come off - makes you think!

I remember many years ago wondering why the motorways connected land fill sites. Then I realised that the land fill sites were in fact service stations.

When I see people drop litter, I tend to keep quiet. Beats a punch in the mush any day.

Hi All

I have a VW Golf (81,000 miles).

I have tried to check my gearbox oil level but the filler plug will not undo. I have used a fair amount of torque using the correct fitting socket, the plug is in a difficult place as well.

Any suggestions?

Hello Cliff. Glad to see you are well. Which other thread?

Hi All

I have a VW golf (81,000 miles).

I am getting constant light and rapid squeeks from my rear suspension whilst driving along normal roads.

When driving over smooth and even roads there are no squeeks.

Could this be the bearings or is it definitely a suspension problem?

Thanks Read more

Re: Handbrake.
Is it a problem or just something to live with?

I'm afraid you'll have to live with it. The main agent never solved the "problem" with a previous Cavalier, and I was told the usual "they all do that sir"
Question Which Oil?
John Basnett

Hi, i have a 1998 Fiat Punto Sporting (1.2 16v) and while checking the oil level recently, i discovered it was very low. I\'m not sure what grade of oil i need and what make is the best.

Any help much appreciated.

To a certain extent, I agree, Richard. I think most people, myself included, got caught up in the debate over the grade, rather than looking at the underlying issue.

Of course, that assumes that the car has been serviced frequently. A car with a 5 litre sump could go through all its oil over 10k at a rate of 1l/2000 miles, which is on the high side but hardly startling. If John means by "very low" that it was only just over the minimum level on the dipstick, and it's been 5,000 miles since the last service, then there is no problem at all.

Even so, it would be good to know how much mileage has been covered since the last oil change, and how much oil is still left.

Now that we are at the end of the Winter, it's a good time to remove trapped mud. Some cars have the most appalling mud traps to their long term detriment.

My suggestion: Peugeot 106 (Mk 2). At the bottom rear of the front wings, mud gathers behind the plastic wheel arch liner and sits in a nice soggy wedge between the inside of the wing and the front of the sill. Good old PSA put the liner behind the wing flange, so the mud gets in and stays there.

I would be interested to hear of any other bad offenders. Read more

KB.

Wheels off the Maestro then pressure wash with a flexible accessory jet nozzle then let it dry and waxoyl. Also check wheel arch rims for rust and spray underseal as a precaution followed by spray of body colour (cosmetic only).

The Yaris is only 6mnths old so just gentle pressure wash or hosepipe and run finger across the mudtrap on the wheel arch rims.

Hi all, I have a strange problem on my 96 Punto. When I bought the car the passenger side screen wash worked and the driver side didn't. I had a fettle and nothing changed. So I swapped the pipes over where they meet at the black spliter: result driver side works, passenger side does not.
This has been bugging me for a while now, so had another go today. If I take both pipes out, water comes out of both bits of the splitter [and out of both pipes...], if I plug the driver side one in, both still work. If I plug both in, only the driver's side one works??
Is this just an Italian thing? Will buying a new splitter change anything?

Thanks for any help

The law used to be, apart from the 14 day stuff, that a NIP had to be sent recorded or registered. This has apparently now changed so that 1st Class means that it is deemed to have been received by the registered keeper. With the PO admitting to losing 500,000 itmes of mail a week, this means that you might not receive it and, if you didn't actually post it back, you could always say that you sent it first class (same as them) so it was deemed to have been received. Of course that would be untrue but might it work or would they just issue another NIP, which would presumably be outside the 14 days, so would that 2nd one be valid or not? Read more

Lagos? What a lovely place! I'm heading back there next week (I think.)

THe Growler

To have been pulled by DVD must have been an unforgettable experience in total police professionalism with rigorous adherence to the finest points of relevant law, along with irrefutable and detailed case references to support one's miserable road behaviour resulting in the pull. I'm rather sorry it never happened to me. Surely any prosecution DVD initiated must have received a rubber stamp from the CPS on the basis it would be a "must win" based on impeccable research.

Without doubt, after the initial stomach-churning part, the right response would have been to confess guilt - what other course?- and savour the encounter for its sheer exquisiteness of performance, like a fine opera or a brilliant legal disquisition, doubtless leavened with that unique constabular acerbic wit ("Been driving long, have we Madam?" etc).

The "pulled" must surely have gone away not merely humbled, but also improved by the experience. (One might venture that's one of the things policing is about, or at least used to be).

I think it's time the "DVD Files" were assembled and published for the enlightenment of the ignorant motorist as Volume 2 of the Highway Code.

I rest my case, and retire in sheer awe LOL.

DVD has proved what I always suspected: behind the stern facade of diligent law enforcment there lurks an impish streak.

I think I have been out-Shakespeared in this instance and would show myself to be less than a gentleman if I did not so admit.

We shall be pleased to shout plentiful amber nectar served bitterly cold by charming acolytes for visitors to our Republic in any number of effusively hospitable establishments. Any visitor is going to need a few after a tour of traffic conditions and driver behaviour.

(Sorry in advance) It always amuses me when someone indignantly posts how they were cut up at a roundabout by a chap in a BMW last night. Every time I throw a leg over (one of the bikes) or slide behind the wheel I am in for a death-defying, logic-free, lawless driving experience every 2-300 metres.

Driving through Crawley this lunchtime, saw one of these little electric cars (the sort usually driven by old ladies along the pavement). This was being driven by a man but along the road, even though there was a pavement available. He just trundled on as though he was a miniature car.

No problem with it, but it was my understanding that these things are not intended for general road use. Don't know how he's covered for insurance purposes for example.

Any answers? Just curious, not trying to be contentious.
