Following on from mark and Rob's discussion of busses, ferraris purchased without the consent of SWMBO...
I once bought a VW 181 'Thing' - the 70s version of the kubelwagen. basic square design, ragtop, fold down windscreen etc.
I thought it would make a great weekend runabout.
It was in canary yellow, but I had it repainted in matt grey, had it heightened by 4 inches, and fitted some great big rally tyres.
The young lady of my affection took one look and said: "I am not going anywhere in that with you."
And she wouldn't.
Anyway, the novelty wore off after a while, and needs changed, so it got sold on ... in hindsight, it was a real "big boy's Toy".
Anyone else had similar experiences?

In the USA a cheap anti theft device that seems to solve most situations of vehicle loss (unless it is towed away).
It is described as "Armored steel Hood lock with ignition immobilizer"
for example:
from Google search with "armoured steel hook lock"
jcwhitney.com/product.jhtml?CATID=4708&BQ=jcw2
At $33 plus pp seems a good buy
They seem very popular and seem to address the basic requirement. Prevent the engine being started and prevent the thief from getting access to bypass the anti- theft switch.
Once installed, to arm it simply press the lock under the dash and led flashes. To disarm just turn the (round) key in the lock.
It appears some have been standard fit for 20 years and no obvious downside to them. I have not seen them on sale in UK.

But they still have to get it off the wheel, along with disarm your regular immobilizer. It's the old story, if mine is harder to boost than yours parked next to it then maybe I'll get lucky and you won't.
Hi everyone. This is an update on an earlier non-motoring thread which - thanks to HJ and Mark - was allowed to be posted here and resulted in much support from those in the BackRoom. A number of people asked to be kept informed of events so here goes... Read more
Incidentally the BBC guide has many references to useful books, web sites and organisation.
There is a long stretch of roadworks on my way to work (rural A road) with temporary (ie semi-permanent!) traffic lights. Yesterday the lights were stuck on red in both directions.
Drivers divided into 2 camps: those who waited virtually indefinitely, and the majority who gave the lights a minute and then ignored them.
Am I right that strictly speaking it is an offence to pass any red traffic light, even if the system has failed?
This was at 7.30 am, so no workmen around. But even if a council workman had been there, does he have authority to wave motorists through a red light? Does a policeman?
What is the correct thing to do if traffic liughts have stuck? Read more
Brilliant, absolutely brilliant !!!
Hi guys
One question for all you diesel wiz kids out there. I have a J reg (91) Citroen AX Turbo diesel 1.4, which has done 140K miles. It just passed its MOT with no problems at all. I should add body work is kind of crap (I presume when the thickness of the French metal used is two millimetres this is expected) , but engine, from what I see is good. I don?t know what it is about this car, I mean it doesn?t go fast, it is very uncomfortable to drive (the seat and the pedals) and there is as much drivers entertainment as my push chair had, non-the less somehow it has the sex appeal, which for a diesel is an achievement, and I have taken a liking of it and would like to keep it as long as its reasonable. So the question is this, how long would this car last under reasonable use and abuse, and whether its worth spending the money to keep it going? For example it need a new cam belt (first one changed at 70K), it will need exhaust shortly, it leaks oil, it needs to have one of the drive shafts replaced, and also possibly the injectors. But I am not sure if I do all those how many more miles I get out of it. I have had it for six month and so far the only things that have gone wrong were a cut off solenoid on the injector pump which meant that the engine was not shutting off and once the immobiliser decided I was a thief and would not let me start for two days. So what you think? How long do you give it? Shall I resuscitate it or let it die gracefully? Oh and another thing, how do I know if I need to change the injectors? Is there a test or something for it? Cheers, and take care.

I wouldn't say you should *definitely* scrap it, but I would be inclined to do so (although I am rather too sentimental about my own car).
Anyway, I think the question you should ask yourself is not, is this car economically viable, but - is this the best car I can get for the money I'm prepared to spend on it. If it is, then you should keep it. If not, either reduce the money you're willing to spend, and ask again, or chuck it.
Even in its current state, it shouldn't be too hard to shift it for £300 ish - after all, it's a small diesel, not THAT old and quite popular in certain sections of the community.
I keep hearing this 'bible' mentioned but have no idea how you can get hold of a copy (if indeed you can). Seems to me that if everyone read a copy then the motoring world would be a hoopier place. Read more
I have read the Highway Code signs section several times over the last few years, and each time I forget the less obvious ones after a few weeks. So I could spend most of my life reading the Highway Code, or I could come to the realisation that I will never know what some signs mean. It does seem to me a bit of a failing if the rules of the road are too complex for all but a few.
London bound on the M3 at lunchtime today was a new Rolls-Royce , in black , fitted with a bright red space-saver wheel at the OSR . Cheap , or what ? Thats made my mind up . I will not buy a car which only has a spacesaver spare ,so I'll stick with the Corolla ! Read more
A Rolls-Royce???? With a space-saver???? The cheap-skate b*****ds!!!! Whatever would Terry Thomas/TOTH say?
Seriously though, if I'm spending a quarter of a million pounds on a car, then I want five full sized wheels, ta very much. Just reinforces what Roland Rat says over on the Ugly Thread!
When I was young I used to blat down motorways at 80-90 without a second thought. I used to speed. I used to chance it and drink three pints and then drive.
But now, I never go above 65 on a motorway, I generally always stick to the limit and I ***never*** drink and drive - not even a glass of wine.
HOWEVER - I find now that if I've been on a long motorway journey, I arrive fresh and alert because I've not been looking for Pc Plod all the time in my rear view mirror. I come home from work persecution-complex free as I *know* that I've not triggered any speed cameras. And I can drive everywhere knowing that if our local constabulary do pull me, then it's for a damned good reason.
Actually, this getting older and driving sensibly malarkey is quite good, isn't it?
I'm actually quite happy to turn into my Dad. For those of you that know him, you'll know that it's no bad thing (God bless his poly-cottom socks).
Why do people still drive like ace-holes? I watch them shoot past me on motorways and think 'Your blood pressure must be through the roof mate'. This is probably a little idealistic but we all need to eat some frood food and become a little hoopier.

Bazza, I know your post was directed at DavidHM, but I
think it's just as relevant to me too, so thanks for
writing it.
It's horrible seeing people getting older and not quite so alert
and able as they used to be, isn't it?

Yes, I think it creeps up on us all! And the trouble is the roads are so fast and busy these days, all of us need our wits about us all the time. Glad my post was some help to you.

Hi,
My mum has a renault scenic which she brought from Motorpoint in 2001. She is now considering selling the car privately and I was hoping you could help me put a valuation on it.
The specification is as follows:
Renault Scenic 1.6 Monaco (top of the range)
Full UK Specification
Extras added at purchase include:
CAT 1 Alarm System
3 Year Gold Warranty
Silver seal paint protection - (3 years?)
2001 Y reg
21,000 Miles
Full Renault Service History
Perfect Condition
I have had a valuation from Parkers and they said around £9400 private. I wasnt sure how much less it would be if it was an import - i believe auto express said about £500 but would be useful to know.
Hopefully you can help me,
Thanks,

Ours does have 1 years warranty left exactly like a UK car. This guarantee is also usable through renault dealers - we deliberately brought this as we felt it was good for resale.
The car actually has air conditioning together with twin sunroofs. The leather is also a nice feature and is a bit more servicable than the cloth seats IMO. thanks a lot for your advice its really useful to get someone elses thoughts.
I think we will put it on about £9300, something like that.
Cheers
If anyone has any alternative thoughts please pleave a message after the tone...beep!
I have a coolant leak at the rear of the engine on my 1999 2.5 V6 Omega although it is only minor and doesn\'t necesitate frequently topping up the reservoir.
The leak runs down the back of the block on the offside, adjacent to the gearbox leaving a very small drip on the garage floor but is only apparent once the engine has cooled down.
My local Vauxhall dealer has had the car in three times now and charged me over £550 to replace the coolant bridge seals at the back of the engine, a thermostat housing and a heater valve. On each occasion the system as been pressure tested. Within a couple of weeks the leak reappears.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what the cause could be? If so any advice would be much appreciated.

IanR,
I had experience of having a leaking hose (parts no. 90 501 210)which comes from coolant bridge to throttle body. Leaking gap was just at the connection to coolant bridge quite similar to what you mention.
I didn't buy an Opel replacement, a 60cm ordinary rubber hose cost me less than 1 pound!

Went out, got tired an emotional in a Spanish bar bought it off my father's neighbour.
SWMBO said "Fine dear - but how are you going to get it home ?"
So I drove it....she loves it though !
