What a crazy idea from Mercedes, I had a V Class with a faulty
oil level sensor luckily it had a dipstick.
Does anyone know if a dipstick can be retro-fitted? Read more
I have a Mitsy Shogun 2.8TD 1998 facelift model, its covered 72k and up until today has caused me no probs. The warrenty has not long since expired so on its last service 400 miles ago I thought I would go to an independant garage for the service and save a few bob (I didn\'t though, was still £400!!). All seemed fine but today I was approaching a small roundabout and went to signal right, It appeared to have problems signalling, it felt stiff but it later appeared it just was not coming on. I thought \"right just get round the roundabout with no signal and sort the problem later\". I started steering and straight away noticed the steering was heavy, it was obvious I had lost the power steering, got it off the roundabout, turned the radio off and it became apperent the engine was not running! This explains the loss of inicators and the loss of PST, the gear lever was still in Drive (auto).
I have played about with the car on my drive, cant find a problem now.... any ideas?? Read more
Thanks for the reply..
Funny you should say that, 5 minutes prior to that happening I opened the car up by the remote key pad, put my littl-un in the back, belted her up, got in the drivers seat expecting to press the key pad as you have 20 seconds to start the car after opening it. Funny thing was, the red immobaliser light was not on, so it was a swift engine start, and I thought as pulling away...."surely that took me more than 20 seconds, why did the immob not kick in?". When everthing cut out 5 minutes later at the roundabout, to restart it I put it in P and tried to re-start, I had to de-activate the immob to get it started, on that occasion I thought "surely the ignition was not off for 20 seconds!".
Perhaps it is what you say, if so I have never heard of it, how can I make sure it dont happen again?
hi, me again,
still looking for cars, time is getting closer though, should get one in easter.
just a question, my parents want me to get a 1.0 metallic blue polo 1998 with just under 30,000 miles on the clock. the asking price is £3,600 but can be negotiated to £3,500. firstly is this a good deal as my parents know the seller through a friend and believe this is the best option.
i however, am not convinced. i believe that the polo will be sluggish and not fuel economical with a 1 litre engine and i would rather get a pug 106 quicksilver which i have always had my heart set on.
my mum seems to think of any argument she can including insurance, (prooved her wrong, its £750 for me, more than that for a higher engine fiesta!) and she keeps telling me that the skirts will stop me from parking properly, and that someone will either vandalise it or steal it and its not reliable in that sense.
can someone please evaluate the situation and give me your opinion. i will then print it and show them the results of people in the know, then we can discuss best options.
much appreciated caz Read more
I'm with the other Dave on this one. Polo 16v, safe, secure, fast, stylish and doable on budget if you don't get paranoid about mileage. You shouldn't, either, because long journeys at 2500 revs will be much kinder to a car than short journeys where the car is being revved up to 4500 and the engine never warms up.
(He's the Dave who's also a law student, by the way, though I'm older than him. There's also the taxi driver, the tune up guy, TOTH, Dave_N, Dave_M, and about a million others).
I had a bump three months back:
I was doing a three point turn in a quiet and completely empty road and just as I was completing my manouver (which I rather vexingly find I cannot spell!!) - my hand had gone to the gear stick to change back into 1st - somebody came up behind me and drove into me. My insurers have decreed that it is absolutely my fault because I had been manouvering. I think this is a bit unfair because turning in the road is not illegal and I had taken precautions (checked there was nobody coming and was watching all round (although cannot watch front and back simultaneously!) before starting my manover. He came along and drove into me! I think we was probably keeping an eye on the traffic lights which were somewhat beyond where I was turning.
My insurers maintain that he was driving along normally and had the right to assume that nobody would be in front of him turning (and thus presumably the right to drive into anybody he found doing so!).
I assumed this would be 50/50 as there were no witnesses. There was no damage to my car (ZX) whatsoever, not even a scratch, but the front bumper of his Alpha was cracked. This happened in November, as despite me providing details at the time, his insurers have only contacted mine last Friday, which I think is a bit stange.
Can anybody think of something to say to persuade my insurers that I should not have to cough up? I have protected no claims so all is not gloom and doom, but I think it's a tad unfair and will cost my my excess.
All my mates advised me to lie blatently on the insurance form and claim that I was sitting at the lights when he drove into the back of me as I was staionary. I decided not to so so - some kind of doing the right thing/kharma/paranoia thing - but now they are all saying 'told you so, neh neh neh).
Rather interestingly, a youth of my acquaintance was recently involved in a crash on a traffic light controlled roundabout. He was on the r'bout and passed some lights at green, somebody joining the roundabout also claims she passed the lights at green and as a result he drove into the side of her car and both were written off. In his case of claim and counter claim, that has gone to a 50/50 insurers decision. My insurers say that both were driving along normally therefore blame cannot be apportioned. I think if this is true, then they are saying that if you turn, manouver or even break then it must be YOUR fault if an accident occurs, even if there is no other evidence to go on, as you were doing something that the other driver could not predict.
I would be interested to hear anybody's opinions, even if they are to say 'quite right' because then at least I can feel satisfied with the insurance company's handling of my claim. Read more
Frostbite -
Yes.
This is the reason I say until I am blue in the face, it doesn\'t matter a #$% what your bonus is, what discounts you get or anything else - only the bottom line matters.
I would rather get a 10% discount off a $50 premium then get 50% off a $500 premium.
The value in \"protected NCD\" is not, in fact, that it is protected. It is not. Not even a little bit.
Assume you have a 60% NCD (4 years), a protected bonus policy and an accident. If you try to go anywhere else within 2 years you will find that the proof of NCD the company will give you has been reduced.
The real advantage is that you get one claim with no increase in premium above their market rate provided you stay with the same company.
They specifically do this because they are looking for lower risk policy holders. You get the protected bonus if that applies to you. If you do have a single accident, firstly it might just be a one-off and secondly you are now tied to them for a further two years so that they can get some of the money back.
It is fair to say that for the second accident the premium loading is not always equivalent to the bonus you would have lost (if you see what I mean) but it frequently is. And if you have a second accident you are then tied to them for 4 years until you have all your NCD back which means that they load your premium with the expectation of you remaining for at least three more years.
Mean, isn\'t it.
Checked Backroom and Google, but does anyone know if a list exists showing the loadspaces of common classy estates. Either that or if you happen to know the l/space of next to newest E Class, V70 A4 & A6, Omega we can build our own right here...
Perhaps I could visit the websites of all these one by one but for example SAAB's doesn't list the l/space for the 9-5

I witnessed some suicidally reckless driving on the M25 this morning, literally a whisker away from causing carnage.
As the perpetrator sped from the scene I was left with that old "why are there never any Police watching" feeling.
That set me thinking - has b'roomer ever seen something similar with the glorious result that there actually WAS a copper handy and he or she did do something?
I'd just feel better if I thought they didn't always get away with it Read more
Yep i met a nutter this morning or a young sensible driver LOL On my way to the M61 and going round a bend there is this nutter overtaking very fast 2 cars so he is then driving on the right of the road, anyhow luckily there was the pavement for me to drive on no pedestrians, why going into town there are a few speed cameras and traffic lights so he might be 10 seconds in front. The trouble is there seems to be more nutters on the road all the time.
I am trying to locate a workshop manual for a 1998 Audi A4 Quattro 2.5 diesel, a search of Halfords & the local motor factors has turned up nothing. Does anyone know where I can get technical info for this car ? Read more

I had a smash in my car well someone went into the back of me we had both just turned right at a cross roads i was just about to turn right again in to a staggared road on the right there was a sign saying no u turn, but technically i was not doing a u turn. Is it still his fault the fact that he hit me?
I have a witness to say he herd him screach round the corner and he saw him hit me, he had enough room to swerve round me. As a result he hit me and spinned me round so in fact i did end up doing a u turn. He says its my fault but i know he must of put his foot down as there was nothing behined me when i started to turn he came out of no where and didnt even make an attempt to turn to miss me.
I would be greatful for any replies Read more
Sorry my query about the U turn has diverted the thread. My reasoning was this, using Mr Right's diagram, if the road division was extended slight further (say to JUST past the right hand turn) and then ended completely (ie not a gap) then a no right turn sign would not be used but a no U turn sign could be used to prevent a right turn into an inaccessible road. All depends on the EXACT layout of the road. This was not at all clear before the diagram was made available.
BUT I agree that hitting a slowly moving /stationary car in the rear is the fault of the second driver. Although mitigating circumstances might include brake lights not working, indicators not working/not used etc.

Have any of you guys used Tune-Up Ltd yet (Andrew Moorey, Adam Going, Alvin(?) etc..) as they seem very knowledgeable indeed?
If anyone has any useful feedback that would be good. Lets not upset anyone of course as they make lots of useful input here!
Also if anyone knows a valid email address to contact them that would be most useful because the email link from their website (www.uktuneup.co.uk) is invalid. The failing address in question is tuneup@ukmax.co.uk ?
Thanks very much in advance

The dealer charged £7 a litre for oil(bp visco 3000), £40 labour,£7.75 filter and £10 environmental charge. All + VAT.
The problems with my V class started from day 1 and it has been back to the dealer at least 20 times:-
clutch replacement (8k miles)
Poor brakes
steering vibration(from new- front wheels needed replacing)
air suspension pump (replaced twice)
faulty central locking
faulty oil level sensor
misaligned doors
faulty trim/trim rattles
faulty electric windows
leaks from rear windows and side loading doors
poor engine performance.
For most of the problems I have had to go back to the dealer several times before they would sort it.
