AS YOU PROBABLY ALL KNOW BY NOW I HAVE JUST BROUGHT A 1991 ROVER 416GTi, NOT BEING FAMILIER WITH IT I HAVE A FEW QUESTIONS.

IT SEEMS VERY GUTLESS AND SLUGGISH ON ACCELERATION
IT HAS A REAL THROATY SOUNDING GROWL WHEN DRIVING IT
AND WHEN TRAVELLING AT 70 MPH IN 5TH GEAR IT SOUNDS AS THOUGH I REALLY SHOUD CHANGE GEAR AS ITS REVVING LIKE HELL

IF ANYONE CAN SHED SOME LIGHT ID BE GRAETFULL, ALSO, DOES INJECTOR CLEANER REALLY WORK????

1) Please don\'t post the same thing in both Discussion and Technical Matters. Its pointless and wastes people\'s time. In addition, this is a subject for Technical Matters so I have deleted it from Discussion.

2) Please use mixed case. All upper case is regarded as shouting and not polite on the web.

3) Meaningful titles will tend to get you help much more quickly.
Thank you.

Thats in no way correct. It is just a coencidence that the 416Si, SLi & GSi have single cam, and the GTi has twin cam. Look at the whole R8 Range (200/400 1989 - 1996) and it doesn't make sense.

The 214/414 (Rover K-series) has twin cam and is available in i/Si/SLi & GSi trims. The 216GTi was available in Both single cam (111bhp) and GTi TC (130bhp). The 220 is available in SLi/GSi and GTi trim, all had the wtin cam T-series Rover engine.

The problem with dealers is that they often say what they either think is correct, or what soulnds good to the customer. When you try and put them right a whole load of bull s**t often comes out of their mouth....

...ok, not all dealers are like this, but I have come accross the odd main dealers that do this and I normally walk straight out the garage..

Hope this helps...

Question BMW Wing Mirror
Dogbreath

My wing mirror got smacked. The unit is okay and the motors still work but the glass is shattered. How much? Will I need a whole new unit or can I just replace the glass? Read more

Parts factors (or Halfords) carry loads of different mirror glass
should have one to fit your BMW.

I have seen an article in the Observer (January 2002) about drivers employed to retrieve cars from the continent whose owners cannot do so, for any reason.

I would like to try this line of business. Does anyone know how to find the companies that organise it? The drivers are self-employed.

I tried all three. So far they haven't replied.

Why are taxis expempt from congestion charging? If the whole purpose of the £5 charge is to remove people from moving (or not!) cars, why are there chauffeur driven chariots exempt?

By the same score, any car with a driver i.e. Limo should be exempt.

As it is a congestion charge and does not apply if you drive into London out of hours and leave the car parked during charging time, taxis are then effectively private transport exempted from the charge.

Excellent letter in the Sunday Times motoring section.

Basically it said that if KL was interested in getting rid of cars from London, then all the boroughs should get together and issue London parking permits. Scrap most of the parking meters as there would be less need as all cars would be able to use the residents (London) parking bays.

This of course would not work as the councils use parking meters, tickets and clamps to gain revenue

Hi,

Clutch is about to expire?

I had an 84MY XR2 from new and started to get clutch slip at about 100,000 miles/ 12 years.

I thought, time to replace the clutch. Got it all apart only to find OK clutch plate, plenty of lining left. Turned out that the clutch release actuating arm pivot bearing had partially seized. This kept pressure on the clutch relase brg, after the pedal had been lifted. With this white nylon bush replaced, no more clutch slip. But the downside is you need to get the bell housing off to remove the bush.

Best to check that its not something simple like a stiff cable.

Question Focus TDdi
robert

Hi all,

Does anyone have any experience of the Focus with the original 90ps TDdi 1.8 engine?

How expensive a change is the timing belt change on this engine?

If this is the original engine as fitted to the old Mondeo - why do these seem to smoke like billyo whilst I don't recall seeing a smoky Focus.

In anticipation.

My V5 has turned up!

Now one small problem is when is it due the first MOT? The date of first registration is recorded as 01/12/2002 (the date of first registration in the UK) but there is a note at the top of the V5 noting that the car was first used/registered/built in 2000 (it's an Eire import), but no specific date.

Now this could mean I have to MOT immediately, assuming first date of use as 01/01/2000
OR
I can leave it until 31/12/2000
OR
I can leave it until 01/12/2005

Help?

My 97 Vectra 1.8 has suddenly developed a problem- the oil light has come on and although it starts ok it now clatters like a diesel. It's had an oil change recently and I didn't notice anything wrong until the oil light came on. Does anyone know what could be wrong?

Thanks

Thanks Andrew. The RAC have just looked at it and said the same. According to my Haynes manual the pressure relief valve should be accessible so I'll check that tomorrow. The RAC guy also noticed that the oil level was higher than it should have been- could this have caused the problem?

Anyone know about this please?
Three year old Polo, 16k miles. Clutch pedal collapsed to the floor with bits of white plastic in the footwell. Had to be towed off Motorway to VW dealer. Arrived in dark so couldn't work out what happened. VW dealer looking at it next week.
Last week the stop light switch failed - not happy! Read more

bertj

If anyone is interested I have now found out that the welds on the clutch pedal housing collapsed breaking various plastic bits in the process. A new housing and clutch pedal were needed. The repair was quite cheap but VW have never heard of this happening before.

I have recently bought a 940td 1995. 140Kmiles,service history to 110K. very clean engine BUT, it is using a lot of oil(1 pint 300 miles!!).The lower side of the inlet turbo is oily, the supply pipe up to the intake manifold is oily inside, and some oil also in the rocker box to turbo breather. There does not however appear to be any backpressure in the rocker box cover. Air filter is clean and pipes secure. How do I diagnose whether it is a turbo or other problem?? (oh yes, sudden puffs of very black smoke under harder acceleration/ high revs) Read more
