Hi,

Mind I ask if your 2.0 Mondeo had the new or old engine? I think the new engine is from S-reg onwards but not 100% sure.

Also, can you confirm if the new 2.0 engine has hydraulic tappets or mechanical tappets?

Thank you very much,

Does anybody know of anyone with similar faults with there golf?
The faults are: 1, Water leak from both front doors, bottom left hand corner. 2, Squeak and creaking noise from steering colum whilst on the move. 3, Rattling trim from drivers door panel and panel below headlight switch. 4, clutch pedal banging noise when released from fully depresed. 5, hesitation under acceleration between 4,000rpm and redline. 6, Low oil pressure warning light coming on for no reason. 7, Exhaust emissions light coming on and rough running of engine. Most of these faults after a few visits have been fixed and the car is in the workshop today hopfully for the last time.I would be interested if anyone else has suffered these problems. Read more

A bloke at work had a V6 4-Motion and it was an appalling car. The whole dashboard rattled, the steering column and brake pedal grated, the door trims worked themselves loose and vibrated badly and to top it off it it wasn't that quick for a 2.8 V6 and it looked soooo boring.
I think V.A.G. have had a bad run of build quality and so on but i'm sure they will sort themselves out.

I nearly ran down a pedestrian a couple of nights ago. He was walking along a de-restricted unlit A-road, wearing dark clothing, and on the left hand side of the road.

I have always understood, and I think it is in the Highway Code, that pedestrians on roads without pavements should walk facing the oncoming traffic, ie on the right. Yet in my experience the majority now walk on the left.
Has the rule changed? Read more

Manufacturers of trainers don't help in this respect. Has anyone else noticed how most running shoes have reflectors on the REAR of the shoes, not the front. When you are wearing these, maybe it makes more sense to walk / run with your back to the traffic?

Dear all,

I am looking for a 2000 - 2500 pounds diesel. Requirements are:
1) Mondeo size or bigger
2) Has to be better than 43mpg, ideally better 47mpg
3) Air-con
4) Group 13 insurance or less
I do not mind buying from auctionsand I do not mind driving an auto. I just want good reliability, cheap parts as I will servicing it myself and very nice to drive.

Any ideas?

PS. My preivous cars were Sierra, Mondeo & Maxima QX

Thanks,

A good bet could be to sign on to Autotrader www.autotrader.co.uk and do a search using keyword Diesel on all cars in your price range within within an acceptable distance from where you live. I would agree that a Passat TDI would fit your requirements and you may be able to find a higher mileage one somewhere around your budget level.>> Dear all,

Any advice gratefully received.

Polo Has suddenly died, Looks like possibly a distributor problem.

There is a healthy spark from the coil, but intermittent at the plugs (New dizzy cap and rotor arm. The plugs on removal are "wet" and I have noticed that there is a crack in the plastic casing of the trigger sensor.

Could a new trigger sensor be the solution?

Thanks Read more

change ht leads as a set. these cars with aex(1.4) engine are reknown for the spark plug caps which are metal tracking the spark to earth thus no go or misfire. if ht is getting back by tracking to the ecu the ecu will shut itself down to protect it.
make sure leads you buy are o.e. quality. if poss get ones with rubber spark plug ends not metal so prob will not happen again.
make sure to change plugs as well as they may be contribting to ht loss. check old leads for white spots in spark plug caps this is evidence of ht voltage going to earth.

5 years ago I bought a new Primera GT, a travelled 47k miles in 2 years without a problem, it was my pride and joy.......then I got a company car, and took a great loss selling it to my mum....

...the troubles started...

In the last 3 years she has only taken it up to 67k, and together with parking dents and scrapes has now developed another problem.

She used is Friday, no problems. Sunday lunchtime I started it and moved it, making sure I ran it for a while, knowing what these Cat equiped cars can be like to re-start after a 30-60 second run.

Sunday night my mum went to go out and it just wouldn't start, not even trying to fire, just a sound of an engine turning over very fast (Chain cam luckily).

We left it until Monday Morning, again, turning over quickly, it was trying to fire but never made it.

Last night I removed the spark plugs which were covered in petrol, the pistons all seemed to move up and down ok. I checked that all plugs had a spark, although I used No.1 HT lead to test them all, so unsure if the other HT leads are ok.

I then connected jump leads up incase the battery had a dry cell, still no luck. I could also smell petrol, i.e, I assume it's getting through to the cylinder (and the Cat!!!)

One other thing that I looked at was the condition of the bore where the plugs fit, there was a creamy/brown dust/powder in the plug bore of cylinder No.1 (not in the cylinder, but above where the plug screws in).

I've checked fuses, fuel pump priming, and oil (for water contamination), without luck.

Does anyone have any ideas?? I'm wondering about a sticking Valve(s), although this seems unlikely to cause total failure to start considering it was 100% upto that point.

Cheers

Recently, the rear brakes (pads\discs) on my Mk2 golf gti have started making an odd grinding nosie. Initially, I thought it was the rear caliper seizing up & causing binding, but having jacked up both wheels the bot spun freely.

The pads are wearing low, but not enough to get the meatl on metal noise.

Also noticed that it is only apparent at low speeds (when crawling in traffic) & doesn't occur until they've warmed up a bit.

Odd thing is that if i pull the handbrake on slightly, the noise disappears.

The discs are a bit rusty on one side, so i'm going to change them this weekend.

Could it be just down to the rusty discs, or something else??? Read more

Could well be a part seized rear caliper. On the early girling rear calipers (mk2 golf and audi) the handbrake mechanism is prone to failure.

Question 993 oil guzzler
993lover

Just found this site and hope I can tap in to your expertise...my 97 993 Targa seems to be drinking oil at an alarming rate. Given, my driving probably doesn't help, but a litre every 1000 miles or so seems greedy. There's no leakage, and a full service 8 months ago at the main dealer failed to turn up anything unusual...has anyone else come across this problem before?

(and as an aside - does anyone have any major faults to look for in elderly Cherokees?) Read more

Hello, i have a 1992 old shape micra, and i was wondering if anybody could tell me why underneath the rubbers there is a green 'swamp sludge' gunk. It looks horrible and i would like to know what it is before i clean it out. The other question is this.. does the new micra (frogeye) have a timing belt, or a timing chain. Many Thanks for your replies. Read more

Polishing the offending bits gets rid of the surface dirt/pits in which algae grow. Used to get it on caravan parked under trees. Annual polish helped a lot.

It seems to grow on accumulated fine dirt...on our house gutters and windows if not regularly washed ...:-(
