I asked Nissan about the interval for chain renewal on my 96/N Maxima QX 3.0 V6 and they said it is not a service item. Is that true?
I understand that even Mercedes S-class have service interval for chains and, from memory, the interval was 250k.
Just worry that my chain may stretch or snap.
There was nothing mentioned in the Car-by-Car Breakdown.
Thanks. Read more
I agree with Toad and Dizzy. The chain will make plenty of noise before there is any likelihood of it breaking. I've been driving ancient chain-cam engines for years and I've never known one to break. They usually outlast the rest of the engine easily. The chain on an a-series engine (mini, moggy minor etc.) will start to rattle a few thousand miles after you replace it. I believe a kit to replace it with a duplex chain will cure this but I've never bothered with mine. Very happy to see the back of rubber cambelts though, I've never liked them.
I brought my MK4 1.6 SE in 1998. I had it lowered by 40mm. The CV joints went at 30,000 miles and then again a few weeks ago the passenger side CV joint went at 65,000 miles. I had it changed, but when cornering above 30mph or going round bends, only right hand, (it doesn?t happen when turning left) or when the car went over a dip in the road and bottomed out the car would vibrate.
It feels like it?s coming from the passenger side and gets worse when you speed up round right hand bends. I then changed the drive flange, didn?t work. Then put the standard suspension back on, the vibration wasn?t as violent, but still there.
One garage said it was the diff bearings. I took it to VW and they diagnosed it as the passenger drive side drive shaft. I?ve had it replaced but no luck. VW now say it?s the driver side drive shaft but they are only 90% sure it will cure it. If that doesn?t work they say it?s a gearbox strip. Feels like I?m just throwing money at it at the mo. Don?t want to waste any more money replacing parts that don?t need replacing.
Also I think there is a very faint constant whining sound.
Can anyone help or recommend what might be the problem?
It?s booked in for Monday 2nd December 2002 can anyone help before then?

I've just put Road Tax on my Car and looking at the charges for 6 months or 12 months, It seems Cost may be about 18 Pounds Extra a year to get Tax every 6 months....
What a rip off....
Why can't we pay the Tax on Fuel...
Is there a better way....

until everything else becomes totally
pay as you go / use then VED is here to
stay.
Why particularly must VED be the last thing ever to change to pay as you go?
I have a Focus 1.8 1998 and it has developed a strange 'clicking' sound when the ignition if first switched on. It only lasts a few seconds and eminates from the heater.
Anyone know what this is and how to fix it?
All comments and suggestions appreciated.

The poxy autochoke on a Golf Mk2... what am I supposed to do??!?
The Pierburg carb has been playing up but there seems to be light at the end of the tunnel.
I took my car to a German auto specialist and they seem to have diagnosed the problem thus:
Dodgy dizzy cap, HT leads and rotor arm. Replace rocker cover gasket. Replace choke unit. Clean out inlet manifold.
Sounds fair enough - the inlet manifold is preventing sufficient coolant circulating round the carb.
What wasn't fair enough was the price! 200 quid for parts plus four hours labour (at 55 quid an hour). Plus obligatory VAT. I've done my own research on the parts and know that they were marking up them up by 100% - I am just interested whether that seemed to be a fair estimate of the labour involved.
Anyhoo, the dismantling and cleaning of the carb seems to have stopped it roaring from cold (the main thing that was annoying me) and the car is running okay (touch wood).
I'm going to do all the other stuff myself - dizzy cap, rocker cover gasket etc. But the inlet manifold looks a bit tougher - what with all those vacuum hoses I'm loathed to remove the carb myself. Oh for a Tune Up in SW London (unless Auto Tune Up are part of the same group?) Read more
I forgot to ask this one after I last had the wheel aligned, the other thread about the Mondeo reminded me...
When I had the wheel aligned, I asked the guy to check the rear wheels for me. He said there wasn't much point as the axle was solid and couldn't be adjusted.
I said I would appreciate it if he could check anyway, so he did.
He put the gauges on and then a puzzled look. Called over someone else and got him to look at it.
Apparently Fiesta rear axles are supposed to toe in at rest and then toe out slightly under load, yet mine was toeing out whilst at rest in the garage! :(
He said not to worry unless I get uneven tyre wear. But I thought I'd check on here anyway, has anyone else heard of anything like this? Is it likely to be a serious problem?

The only way that I can think the fault could be corrected would be by replacement of all of the rear suspension and axle parts...
He didn't pass judgement after a sharp intake of breath, shaking of the head, a little tutting and pound signs rolling in his eyes did he?
Hi,
Wheres the best place to buy a bmw mini. Micronetshowroom had the One at £9,097 but its now £9400...the gap is rising between a uk one and that...however i still reckon importer - know any other good importer prices?
Also, have been considering an A3 1.6 Sport used and a 316ti compact used - is the Mini still a better car?
any opinions appreciated! Read more
Sorry to be picky but BMW offer 5 years free servicing with the TLC package not 3 years.
The Mini is probably one of the few cars where going the imported route does'nt really make financial sense.
Apparently if you buy a ONE you can buy a chip which increases the performance to same level as a Cooper for just a few hundred pounds. JC from Top Gear mentioned this a few weeks ago.
I have a Rover 220SD with a "Brakes" problem. The problem is the pedal goes rock hard and the brakes themselves are of very little use. The problem has only just started and it has never happened before. If I stop turn of the engine then restart the brake pedal goes back to normal. I have checked the obvious things like the servo and the vacume pump and pipes but all seem to be in order. Got any ideas please?

Any update DD?
Certainly never seen any vac pump failures to date on the 220SD....
218 and 418 Pierburg vac pump, yes, loads, but not the 220's combined with alternator pump.

Having a long memory & a Vauxhall engine destroyed by this product I want to be sure that Shell Fuels are safe for me to use in my 93 Carlton 2.0 (Cat). (I've never used Shell products in her)...I know this may seem bizarre, but once bitten twice shy. Any comments/observations from other Vauxhall owners gratefully received.

I believe that additives are still manually added at refineries, so human error may still come into it. I have no current factual evidence on this however, but perhaps someone in the know could confirm or correct?
>>Try Andyspares in Slough, they're on the net
They also have a branch in Leeds and Bradford. (plus many other places). Probably trading under the parent co. name of 'German, Swedish & French.
