Hi everyone,
Dunno if anyone can help (I hope so).
I have gradualy developed a tapping noise from the engine which went away when the engine warmed. I took it to the Rover garage and they said that a Rover engineer was coming out to inspect it. According to the garage the engineer said that he had heard this before on some other 75's and it was nothing to worry about although they failed to state what the problem is! I was asked to take the car back in a months time for another inspection. The thing is I feel (no...I know I am!) as though I am getting fobbed off, they are a professional garage and should be able to diagnose a problem such as this straight away!!!! The car has a months warrenty left so I need to get this sorted :-(
I can now hear the tapping all the time and it doesnt go away anymore when the engine is warm it just keeps tapping between 1000 - 2000rpm. I can also hear it at idle although it sounds more like a knocking noise at the 600rpm idle speed and I am sensing a vibration through the body of the car at idle also, all of which I never had before.
Has anyone else experienced anything like this and could a faulty tappet cause these problems? (tapping 1000-2000rpm, knocking and vibration at 600rpm) Dont get me wrong the vibration is not bone shaking but it wasnt there before.
P.S. I have tried changing the oil and filter including trying this engine flush stuff with no resolution to my problem.
Cheers,
Lee.

I have recently had my car stolen - it was an R reg (1997) Honda Civic 1.5 Vtec 5 door, and had done aprox 47,000 miles.
I am wondering if there is anything I should be aware of when trying to get the best pay out from the insurance company, It had a full service history and had just been taxed and MOT as well as having a new exhaust and Brake pads. Should I accept the first offer I get from them or is possible to haggle and get a better one. Aprox, how much should I expect to get from them?
Cheers. Read more
Thanks chaps...

Does any body have a clue as to how much energy the sun emits to warm the earth as opposed to the total energy output of the world or even cars??
Ther just seems a lot of desert or even USA that gets sun energy as opposed to using/abusing fossil fuels Read more

THE devastating floods that struck Central Europe this summer were not a result of global warming, leading meteorologists said yesterday.
Extreme summer rainfall of the sort that led to the inundation of cities such as Prague and Dresden is out of line with the way in which climate is predicted to change as the world warms, an international conference at Reading University heard. Far from being a global warming symptom, as observers such as Gerhard Schröder, the German Chancellor, have suggested, the best models indicate that summers will get dryer, rather than wetter, over coming decades. Heavy flooding is expected to become a greater problem mainly in winter months................

Yet more evidence that cars are being unneccessarily penalised.
Mother has had her Rover 111 (ok Metro) for about 6000 miles and refuses to service it or even change the oil because it is 'running fine.' Well it isn't. She doesn't know when it was last serviced, could have been 10000 miles before she bought it and its definately been a short run car because its only done 40000 in 5 years!
Point is, its now sounding tappety. Oil level is fine even though the oil is an interesting black goo. What has she broken and therefore should I say something to her again? Read more
The saying "Don't fix it if it ain't broke" is one to be followed without exception.
There was a hydro-electric power station in Wales where the Station Manager had avoided the stipulated overhaul for 5 years beyond the due date. Eventually, he had the £ multi-million valued station overhauled. One month later the turbine smashed to bits because of an error made during re-assembly after the overhaul!

Do any of the Auto Electricians out there know if the brake lights affect the working of the cruise control on a Vectra?
My friends Vectras CC was not working, he noticed that a brake light had popped, he replaced it and lo and behold the CC now works.

"I'll try the n/s and let you know."
Easier said than done, of course the duff bulb was now in the skip. doh!
Anyway if removing the bulb altogether simulates the case then it has no effect on the n/s and the cc still works.
I have a new Avensis which suffers from terrible wind noise at high speed and which seems to come from the top of the windscreen. I have previously had an Avensis on hire and don't remember this problem. Does anyone have any experience of this or any advice as to the cause and remedy ?

Hi again

I bought a Toad keyless immobiliser from an internet store. It didn't come with installation instructions.
I rang the supplier, and a helpful Geordie told me what the colours meant, and promised he'd send me an installer manual, which he had been told would be included. Of course, it never arrived. I soldered the immobiliser in place quite happily though, and my insurers accepted the installation certificate that I filled in myself with the supplier's details.
Don't use scotchlocks to put an alarm in. An insurer will know you've done it yourself. Solder the connections, wrap in black insulation tape, and hide in the wiring loom.
Understandably, only 'approved installers' are issued with instructions, for 'security' reasons.
My Toad immobiliser colours, if any help, were
Yellow - Driver's door switch
Red - Positive supply
Orange - Ignition sense
Green x 2 - Ground wires
White x 2 - Fuel pump circuit
Blue x 2 - Starter immobilisation
Don't forget to take the coloured sleeves off when you've finished and tested it. Have fun.

Hi Lee,
This is not a technical response, but a complaints process one since you have a limited warranty left.
1. Write to both the dealer and Rover UK customer care about the problem before the warranty runs out..and tell them that you want it fixed under warranty. Reason: When the warranty expires they cannot fob you of with "there is no written record that you brough this to our attention before the warranty expired".
2. Get a second opinion about the noise from another Rover dealer. Get the full name of the person who makes the diagnosis.
3. Sit back and wait for the reply from your letter.
Worse case: They "fix" the problem under warranty. Problem still there. Rover dealer says "Ah! Thats a DIFFERENT problem from the first complaint! We are not going to fix that." Send letter from step 1 and diagnosis details from step 2 to your solicitor.
I employed this method with Seat UK after loadsa warranty problems..car got fixed and I never spent a penny.
Bottom line: If you want something you are going to have to be a polite but persitent pain in the b**!
