Hi everyone, I'm after some advice...
I've a problem with my Citroen ZX (92J 1360 (carb)) that's got me a bit flummoxed. The problem began when I pulled into a parking space - it stalled suddenly just before I stopped. After that it hasn't run at all. I've checked the ignition and it seems to be sparking OK, so my initial though was that it must be fuel. The fuel pump seems to be working as it should, and I changed the carb for one I had lying around in the garage. The new carb has worked fine in the past, and I can hear and smell fuel being squirted into the inlet manifold when the throttle is actuated. No change.
Down to mechanical basics - the engine components rotate OK. I haven't done a compression test yet, but there doesn't seem to be any reason why it would have lost compression - the engine wasn't stressed before it stalled, and there were no warning signs.
What's really confusing is that it won't even attempt to start, and everything seems to be OK.
I'm going to change the ignition system tonight as it probably needs doing anyway (distributor cap, rotor arm, plugs, leads), and check the compression.
Any other ideas on what could be causing this? - it's driving me mad! Read more

Something in the back of my mind tells me one of the backroomers was involved with changing one of these heaters (last year?).
I know the book time is 7hrs and the dash has to come out. Guess it's going to be a major pig whichever way you look at it.

Well I have added Radweld Darcy, but told the customer it was unlikely to do anything or work for long if at all. It just seemed worth a try.
So guys I know we've had the comedy soundbites (as I would give you in the same circumstance) but what is so terrible about this job?
After all it's only nuts. bolts, screws, clips, wiring and so on. Given a weekend and a calm workshop surely I'm going to hack it????

Morning All,
The tyres on my Cavalier not retaining their pressure too well any more. My local Vauxhall garage says that the lacquer on the alloy wheels is coming off and air is escaping from around the rim. I suspect that this problem is going to get worse as time contines!
I do not really want to lash out on a set of new wheels so I I was wondering if alloys can be refurbished, what the approximate cost might be per wheel and if anyone knows a reputable firm in or around the Bournemouth area.
Thanks in anticipation

Obviously it would be best to properly refurbish the wheels but if you can't afford the time to do this there is an alternative that should last quite a long time. This is to have a tyre dealer remove the tyre from the leaking wheel, clean off the loose corrosion and refit the tyre using the purpose-made sealant that he will almost certainly have to hand (usually a bright orange cream). The cost, including rebalancing, shouldn't be much more than a fiver per wheel.
Recently had a slow puncture on a 225/45/17 Pirelli P6000, the tyre had lost some pressure but was not run flat. The puncture was situated in the middle of the tyre so i had a tyre repair in the form of a patch. On arriving to collect the tyre two side wall bubbles were present, the tyre was almost new say 3k from it. Could the tyre repairer be responsible for this? i am concerned because the recent service found another (well worn) tyre with a side wall bubble, at £100 a time its proving expensive. The tyre pressures are regularly checked. Would it be worth contacting Pirelli?

I had a bubble on a P6000 18 months or so ago, albeit a slightly older tyre (10k, 10 months). The dealer didn't want to know. He said that Pirelli would simply claim I had hit a kerb or speed bump too hard.
I'm interested in what the 3 A6 TDI 110 Estates fetch - be grateful for any response. Thanks.

have searched the old backroom to your thread about mondeo pinking as I am stuck with the following- 95 1.8 zetec mondeo, pinks really bad during hot weather, but only after the 1st intial start up & run, the next run(s) after engine is up to temp allways produces terrible pinking unless you use minimal throttle opening. during cooler weather & at night no pinking.
have replaced the engine coolant sensor, checked the grey "fusible diode" (ford parts description!)near the bulkhead- it seems to be a fuse as several others checked all turn out to have continuity both ways?.
A frend in an ex ford franchise has put it on the fds diagnostics kit which shows no fault & the air temprature sensor shows readings on the multimeter similar to the book but its difficult to be realistic with a hot air gun!
next step seems to be to change the air sensor, or do you think that the module is ok in the 1st cold start cycle & then freaks out when engine up to temp??

charles & andrew,
sorry to drag it up again but the mondeo is still as we last spoke in july & I think the TSB is a red herring, just come down M3 from richmond to J6 @ steady 80 & when toe put down to maintain speed on hills, engine pinks quite bad- sorry, but at 7-8degC air temp then maybe its not the module at high ambient temp!
regards footsfitter>> I have just looked on my system and there is a
Ford TSB relating to this from 1997.

Service Instructions
It is possible for engine pinking/detonation to occur whilst driving under
load (eg driving up hills) with high ambient temperatures due to
the spark timing strategy programmed into the powertrain control module. To
overcome this concern, a new powertrain control module (see Parts Required)
with a revised calibration.

Not good news cost wise but I hope this helps.

Does anyone have please, a reference list for spark plugs manufactured by Magneti Marelli ?

Thank you very much Ian, your link brought the results required.
Rgds, Pete.
My son has just had his 91J Escort 1.6LX nicked from outside his Edinburgh flat. Assuming the worst (or maybe the best), that it is either never recovered, or is found burned out or written off, what is a reasonable figure to accept from the insurers? The car was in good average condition for the year, with a genuine 70k on the clock. Any input gratefully received.

Hello.
I own a Yellow corraod which has a rather tasteful Red go faster stripe down the side of it. The stripe has been placed here, i think, due to own of the door panels being partially re-sprayed.
I am going to have this door re-sprayed again and am keen to remove the red stripe from the rest of the car.
Whats the best way to do this? I read the post about removing car stickers which was helpful. But I thought I should ask in case any of these solvent will damage paintwork?
Any advice on how best to remove this stripe would be appreciated.
Ross
P.S. The stripe is of a stick on variety! Read more
use a hair dryer. Gets them off no probs.
Having scoured the private ads and local franchises, the glut absorbing trade sale supermarkets appear very tempting on price. The cars generally have the advantage of being one owner and well maintained, but my concern is the inevitable lack of care for cars not your own. How relevant are acknowledgment of running in periods and general abuse in terms of long term reliability in modern cars.
All comments very much appreciated!
Cheers
