>Well don't look at me, my sopboax (1) has been off the road for weeks
Nothing heard for some ten days - does anyone know, please, is all well with far-flung friend, or did he undergo some sort of Damascene conversion in Geordieland?

My passenger side wing mirror has broken off on my Mk 3 Cavalier LS. I don't want to pay the £60+ charge from the local vauxhall garage for a replacement which will just be knocked off again in the multistorey car park a few months later. Anybody know where I can pick up one cheaply around the Hertford or Harlow area? Any scrappies around - couldn't see any in the phone book but I am hopeless at navigating the Yellow Pages.
Why can't I find an abandoned cavalier by the roadside when I need one :-) Read more
I was just about to rush for the araldite, but unfortunately the whole mirror assembly got ripped off and is smashed to bits.
Doing a bit of ringing around and I found out £25+postage for a used one from Vauxhall Spares, or £30 for a new one from the local auto part store.
well - not smeary at all really, but it makes a good title.

I wouldn't now be without a can of Maplin Label Remover (Ordercode UP74 - 250ml) for about thirty bob a can. Removes those labels that manufacturers stick on things which, when you try to peel them off, leave bits of paper and adhesive on the item. Will probably help maybe 66 out as well.

In Cuba recently, walking down main street in Havana... among the many wonderful old cars saw a Singer Gazelle, with beautiful gleaming metallic blue paintwork and shiny chrome grille. As it went by, surprise, surprise...the rear was a Lada!

Inspected an Audi 1.8 16v for a friend over the weekend. 94k with full VAGSH.
All ok except that the chain linking the cams I feel is noisy. What is involved with replacing this item. I plan to do it when I give it a full service and all fluid change. Read more

Are there any products on the market( that REALLY WORK ? ) that I can add to my engine oil that will stop an oil leak?
The problem appears to be at the cylinder head and in the past I have changed the head gasket and had the head skimmed which cured the problem for a couple of years but it appears to have returned.( The head bolts are fully torqued down OK )
I suspect that the block wants skimming which will be expensive and time consuming, hence the request for a quick "additive to the oil " answer.
I`ve seen a Wynns additive in Halfords but that appears to only cure oil seal leaks.( by reacting with the oil seal ?)which I don`t think will be suitable.
Someone in the past has mentioned that there are excellent products on the market nowadays that really work, so what are they ?
Any suggestions?
Thanks

Top tip John!
While my Audi is out of action, I have borrowed a nearly new Renault Espace from work, and I am struggling to make sense of it. Certainly it appears to have lots of space inside, but much of it is between the steering wheel and the windscreen, where you can't store things. The distance from the front bumper to the drivers seat is almost exactly the same as my Audi, and that doesn't even have a transverse engine. There's plenty of headroom, but I don't usually wear a tall hat while I'm driving, so it isn't a lot of use to me.
The one thing the extra height does is to make the vehicle feel unstable on corners. Feels underdamped as well, even without any passengers or luggage. What it is like to drive with seven people in it I wouldn't like to think - a Transit van feels more stable and sure-footed on twisty roads.
The boot (once you take the rear seats out) doesn't look any bigger than a conventional estate, and the front seat cushions are a bit short (presumably to maximise the interior space). It's a swine to park, because you can't see anything forward of the base of the windscreen, and there are more blind spots behind than an old Golf. All in all, I can't really think of any advantage (other than newness) that it has over the old Renault 21 Savanna estate I dug up for a friend recently. But, lots of people are buying them, so what am I missing? Read more
Yee hah, where did I put those roper gloves?
Growler - Judging by the web site you've drawn to the forum's attention, the answer seems to be "Yes, definitely!" - now we know why. Gives a whole new meaning to Conc*rse d'Elegance ....
Let's just hope that Jenny Tailor doesn't take umbrage at some of the links!
Best wishes and glad to see you are back in the fold.
