Anybody want to suggest a car I should rent & then write about ?

1) Must be available from one of the big rental companies
2) Have some respect - not a Fiat Uno or something

(I am willing to accept bribes from car manufacturer's who would prefer I did not drive one of their vehicles). Read more

At this rate you'll land up spending as much time in the UK as Tiny Blur.
Or is it that Tiny Blur will land up spending as much time in the UK as you?

The taskbar (the bar that normally lies along the bottom of the opening screen) has moved up the left hand side of the screen, how do I get it back down to the bottom? I have tried clicking and dragging, but it doesn't work. I can drag it to the right, making it much wider than normal, but I can't drag it down to the bottom. Help please. Read more

It was the 512 ran on DOS, with a terrible monitor resolution (lack of). It was originally an A and B drive, then I forked out for a Seagate HD. I can only describe the feeling as similar to that when I cast out my old black and white TV and got a color one 35 years ago! But a totally unburstable machine, unlike today's finicky things. It survived everything we did to it, including a 4 year old daughter all over it.

I am sad to report that The Queen Mother passed away at 3:15pm this afternoon, Saturday 30th March.

Our thoughts and respects to the Royal Family during this incredibly difficult time.

Agree entirely, esp. about the Dirty Digger (who is now a naturalised American, just to circumvent foreign ownership laws in the US).

The Times, 30 March, 1932.

The 8-cylinder Ford.

Details of the new Ford 8-cylinder motor car- the first of more than four cylinders made by the company- were announced today at Detroit by Mr Edsel Ford. The car has a speed of 75mph and the engines are capable of developing 65hp. Like the improved 4-cylinder car which will develop 50hp and do 65mph, it will be made available in any one of 16 types of body.

I don't know what it is about V-8's. I've owned a variety and currently have 3. Two of them are from the 60's and one has never had a spanner on it but still runs like a watch. That endless smooth surge of power as the thing girds its loins and proceeds to leave everything in the rear distance may have something to do with it, along with that seductive exhaust note at idle. Nothing else is quite the same.

I see the tourist board in Wales are giving away a new Freelander in a holiday promotion.

Is this so you never make it up that last hill on the way out and stay there spending for ever?

Honest John

Big Phil's ad is correct. People buy Freelanders because of the attached prestige they imagine will come with their purchase. Driving a Freelander tells the public you are British and pround of Britain's industrial heritage (whover actually owns it) and that you have bags of money to repair the thing and run other cars when it goes wrong. That said, they can be fairly reliable. My neighbour has now run a nearly new V6 for three months without a single hitch (of either the trailing or mechanical variety). There is one vehicle in this category that is head and shoulders above all the others. Road test of it next week.

Remember my RAC renewal where they had jumped it from the £34 last year to a renewal of £65. I was chuntering that the building societies had just been pulled up for disadvantaging the existing members in favout of new business etc etc.

Thanks for all the replies, I did follow several leads up and came close to a switch.

However phoned the RAC today (one day before renewal) and put the case to them again, keep a customer etc etc, they finally agreed to renew for £43. Basic recovery for self plus SWMBO, both any vehicle and as a passenger.

Decent deal and good of them to see sense. Well done RAC.

Can anyone please recommend, from personal experience, an A frame type engine lifting hoist, suitable for the home DIYer and collapsible for storage?
Can be hand crank or 12 volt, for lifting Fiesta/Metro size lump and box.

Any input much appreciated. Read more

I'd agree - don't see this as cheapskate at all. Simply the cost-effective and practical answer to solving a problem that occurs very rarely. As a neighbour (ex REME officer) watching me lift the engine out of the Stag said - 'I can tell you're an engineer'. I took it as a compliment!

PS What's a Brillo pad?

I have a 1992 rover 416, I noticed recently when braking my hazard indicator lights on dashboard would glow smetimes. Now what happens is that when indicating and applying brakes the indictors speed up, but work normally again when I release brake. It also happens when I put car in reverse.

This fault happens intermittently.

Any ides?

What do you mean when? Still I guess rovers electrics are not as bad as their mechanicals!

Mike Rutherford rightly gets out of shape in this week's DT motoring regarding this subject. He mentions London as being the only major city in the world which will levy a charge to enter its centre. I may be out of shape myself on this in case the nature of the beast is different, but surely Singapore is one major city which certainly charges traffic to enter its CBD, and has done for years.
