Blunkett wants to prevent hooligans blazing around housing estates by giving police the power to impound the car, to be returned after payment of a release fee.
Good idea, thought I.
Then I remembered the traffic plod who stopped me for an offence that wasn't an offence. He didn't know the law, we had a heated discussion, and he finally gave in.
That was OK, but what if he had been one of those arrogant types who occasionally turn up? Would I have had a long walk to the car pound? .........You bet I would.
Will Blunkett protect us from such abuse?.............doubt it. Read more

Thanks for thinking of me. An early Series 1 might be on the list for a proper retirement.
Otherwise far too many unfinished projects here!

The subject of Automatic v Manual has been raised on a number of occasions and it is simply a matter of personal choice which suits.
I suspect that the majority, like me, drive manuals because an Automatic saps power, costs more to buy and you get a lower mpg.
However in a Mercedes brochure, extolling the virtues of an automatic, it claimed that for ?everyday motoring? mpg was the same as a manual as you were always in the correct gear for optimum economy, (for the speed you wished to travel at) It would change up and down the box in a short distance, where a manual driver might not bother.
As for performance, leaving the car in ?D? I can accelerate as fast as any racing driver(in the same car) ? every time.
So my question ? has anyone got statistics on fuel consumption, running costs etc of manuals and automatic models of the same car? From a fleet user perhaps.

You can't expect an auto box to replace all the functions of your brain! I live in a very hilly area, and am continually slapping the shift from D to 3, and even 2, and I too like to think I use the brakes less than the guy in front. At 65k I am still on the original shoes and pads, with plenty of meat on them. The really relaxing thing about an auto is that doing nothing at all is almost never hazardous , but sometimes you can help it if you feel like it.

Drove one whilst one work experience, zippy but bland and that is all I can remember about it.
Was waiting at the traffic lights behind one of these today.
I don't know about the front view, but the view of the back is UGLY.
Am I being unfair?
The A3 looks good from all angles, but that is in a different league. Read more

Thanks T, Last reply for the time being, but, as you say, don't leave it too long before you return and say how you're getting on.
Err... almost but not quite not quite. Not unless Ma & Pa had you just as they were leaving school, but a clue would be - for the past 28 years, my firms truck has been a bright shade of red, with 'designer' stripes down the side, and I've not got much time left with them.
Yes it will have PAS and, no you won't struggle with it. Have a look at
www.4car.co.uk/jsp/main.jsp?lnk=231_2&reviewid=98 and that will make you feel even better, they think it's great. Pleased you're settled and hope the two dogs like it, (what are they?) and am sure they'll appreciate your moving out of London to wherever? The only reason I looked at 4X4's myself is my hope that when I leave the 'firm', I can escape from here to somewhere quieter and a bit more remote and considered the possibility of one mainly for the winter. Anyway, bye for now, KB.
While on holiday in the US, I saw spray cans for disinfecting the heater inlet and air-con ducting to prevent the growth of bacteria and fungus. Is anything similar available in the UK? Read more
Well Carl obviously doesn't write those instruction sheets for Ikea then. :)
That was great Carl, muchas thanks.
Right , look in the passenger footwell, you'll see two struts that brace the dash to the floor. look above the right hand strut, there are two silver phillips screws, mine have a blob of blue paint on each. Aim the spray at the ducting directly above the mid-point of these screws, and it will hit the spot.
I've used so much smoke testing all positions of the heater controls - seems to vent best with the left hand dial (distribution) turned fully left or fully right - that I expect the bugs in the pipes have expired before I've even found the spray product you guys are talking about.

Watching Driven this week {CH4} with the Rover 75 estate {AKA MG ZTX or similar}, V the Lexus and Audi, never mind which is best now, which will be best at 5 years old?
The Audi will look as new, the Lexus will have had nothing changed at all, apart from serviving, the Rover, with its doddgy engine will have had its head gasket changed twice, the bumpers will all be cracked and most of the trim will have fallen off.
Plus as implied on Driven, its already 10 years behing the times in terms of engineering.
The Rover will make the cheapest 2nd hand buy no doubt and so will be the worst new buy. So sad when you look at our motoring heritage.

Yes, quite.
A great way to 'shed' pounds (sterling).

My 2.0 Fiat Marea keeps overheating and as yet the local garage can't find anything obvious wrong with it. Symptoms are that when the engine has to work at all hard, the water temperature gauge starts to point skyward. Strangely enough, giving it plenty of revs bring the temperature back down. I'm no mechanic, and the car is going to have a new thermostat as the next cheapest thing to replace but I thought I'd see if this makes any sense to anyone. I bought this car very cheaply 18 months ago to do lots of miles and although it's a good drive, great engine etc, I have grown to hate it. If I wasn't almost bankrupt I'd change it for something quiet and cosseting.
Cheers,

I'd go for the radiator
