My 12 yr old Gunson analyser has just packed up. (I think I remember daughter dropping it in the summer!). Of course it happens when I need it.

Anybody any views on what is best buy as a replacement? Read more

If you are serious troll through the classifieds and try and find some older professional stuff that is not suitable any more for pro use i.e single or two gas which should be adequate for your needs.

A girly friend of mine has a Met blue 98 S Pug 206 LX 3dr with air. She over-expended herself to buy the thing and can't really afford to run it. So now it is playing up bad (out of warranty in July) and she can't afford to fix it.

A mechanic friend has looked at it and he says it is only running on 3 cylinders and she is complaining of loss of power. She is taking it to Peugeot tomorrow. She has kept the servicing up to date and it has done 21k miles. What is the possibility of Peugeot stumping up for some of the work? I don't know if it has had the recall done but she has had to have the cat replaced.

Also - what is the car worth in present condition and engine fixed condition? She basically wants rid of it. Thanks all. Read more

I'd advise she gets it fixed and then sells it privately, as a sound-condition one will be worth much more than one with problems. 206s are extremely desirable, in fine fettle she'll get a good price

Stated in Saturdays DT( its always a day late in Dresden)the number of front line police in the UK is 120000 this does not include days off ,sickness etc For 56000000 people no wonder the solving rate is only 1 in 10 and 30% of crimes go unreported. Its not cut price under trained traffic wardens an these new wardens but ahigh paid well trained police force that is backed both by the government courts and the people hand all the paper work over to civi staff would be a good start. Its understandable that if you get stopped for speeding you could lose your job house and family and your house gets broken into and nobody is bothered to turn up Read more

Should the total not be devided by 4. Thats 3 x 8hr shifts = 24hrs and then someone will be day off!

after posting note about door mirror bezel mounting ring being ex stock Rswipes replied:-

Are you sure that was a Land Rover Dealer????

reply- yes that's right!

also vehicle is in workshop for 1st mot & check over, while in process of replacing back light bulb that lights up the Lcd display for the climate control (you have to strip out the centre consol a fair bit), its now transpires that the bulb is not blown but there is no supply to the bulb holder from the circuit board.

on the basis that the new control unit required is £520 & there is nothing to loose, a quick look under the covers shows that it will be possible to snip off the bulb holder contacts from the pcb & solder in new feed wires connected to a suitable supply

not a genuine LR repair, they would just fit a new unit same as they would of put on a whole door mirror instead of a bezel ring & glass!! Read more

Does anyone know the Law on passengers in Vans (new and converted to a "camper van") and seat belts?
Presumably, if seats are fitted they must have belts and the latter must be used.
Ditto if more adults carried than there are seats this is an offence.

A couple of people have asked recently where they could get insurance quotes, in particular on-line.

Try this link and it seems to be not just for Motor, it appears to list quite a number of people who do on-line quotes.

This made my day (it's raining), I just saw a pristine Citroen DS with pre-suffix plates (so that makes it over 40). It still looks the business. Most modern stuff will look rubbish by the time it's 4! Read more

You're asking the question today that I will be asking in about 5 years time. What will I eventually replace the Xantia HDi with?

I think by then that the styling of the C5 will have grown on us - after all, the Ford Sierra eventualy looked quite OK didn't it? The trouble with styling that instantly looks stunning is that it rarely lasts. For example, I now think that the Focus and Mondeo/Audi A4 look look passe.

I like the basics of the C5 - size, suspension, HDi engine etc. but I am very concerned about the amount of electronics it has. This point will probably apply to most cars by then, so maybe it will be Hobson's choice.

Purring along the Chester High Road at 70 mph on the Wirral last night in my 10 year old Volvo 740 SE, I wondered how a newer, more modern car would feel.

How could it be better? Bob Harris on the radio, memories of grilled mushrooms with Brie and bacon as a starter, rib-eye steak, perfectly cooked by the chef at the Clegg Arms, friendly, attractive waitresses, good company, fine wine (for the others, not me, I drank a jug of water).

Car was running very smoothly and sweetly - only slight annoyance was the the imposition of a new 40 mph limit where it was previously 60.

Dunno why folks buy brand new cars. Wheel in each corner and one to hold, what more is there? Spend it on the rib-eye. Read more

When I was a kid, farmer Bob Jones used to wear a fascinating cap.

I was later told by mother that I asked "Where can I get a cap with a peak at the back?"

Is business so good that franchised dealers can treat potential customers with contempt?

Getting ignored in a delearship seems to be the norm. But what about "we are too busy to offer test drives on a Saturday?" I was the only customer but the three salesman seemed to be enjoying the rugby. No I won't be back. Read more

KB has suggested I drop you a line for advice as you own a Rav4. This Sat I have put a deposit on a Toyota RAV4 DX 3 door. 1996 (N Reg) 28,000 #6,495 immaculate condition etc. can you tell me any downfalls of owning a Rav4 (I have researched about expense) but can you tell me a few other facts I might not be aware of.

Many thanks

Hello Tracey

I can't think of any off-hand... but please email me. In the meantime I'll give it more thought.
