Just spoke to a rather upset mate who discovered last night that some SOB has tagged the bonnet of his new silver Golf with what looks like spray paint.

He's desparate to get it removed by the weekend, but his VW dealer was as helpful as offering to book him in for a quote on Friday afternoon...

So can anyone advise what the best way to remove or cover this is in the short timespan available?

Would it just come off with a bit of T-cut and elbow grease? Read more

Thanks all for your advice!

1987 C BMW 316 requires a new rear exhaust section. I have been quoted around £20 - £30 for a replacement. However, I am interested in a stainless steel rear section as I think that they look more attractive over a longer period of time.

I would really appreciate any information on:

- Whether it is possible just to fit a stainless steel rear section, or does the whole exhaust need to be replaced?
- How to go about selecting a rear section. What will fit my car?
- Relative costs?
- Will the performance of my car improve?
- Any other pitfalls that I may have overlooked?

Thank you very much in advance

Yours

No, fitting a 1500cc exhaust to a 1900cc TD will not cause the head gasket to fail.......:-))

It will just blunt the performance slightly.......

Hi

Here in Nottingham the barmy Local Council are planning to introduce a workplace parking levy. This levy will apply to all parking spaces in the City and the Council state that the levy will be set at £150 per year per space initially rising to £350 per year per space after 10 years.

It is possible to e-mail comments to the Council and it would be greatly appreciated if as many as possible could be sent (objecting preferably) in order that they might come to their senses and scrap the idea.

It is thought that the Council are trying to force people to use the buses and the new tram system (when built) - not surprisingly the Council own the major part of both of these modes of transport.

The e-mail address is:

Thanking you in anticipation.

Similar set of lights here in Bristol near the M32 junction - out of order last week, traffic flowing freely as a result, easier to park in the bays near the local shops, shopkeepers very happy. But they have been repaired and it's back to the usual queues and pollution!

Does any body know of an after fit kit which will enable me to use sidelights as running light, ie they come on with ignition rather than having to switched on manually.

Oops! Colin Shawcross has very politely put me right on this by e-mail. I should stop and think before I type. Sorry!

Would be interested to hear your opinions on the best sounding car.
Personally i like any Alfa Romeo with a V6.
But probably the best is a Diablo V12. Read more

I remember the earliar Shell product fom the 1980's. Believe they marketed it as Shell with ICA - Ignition control additive.

Lateral thinking suggests that Shell Optimax is a product evolved from ICA but without its downside. However Shell with its world class labs and years of expertise, got it wrong the first time. Pleased to hear via the Forum that the product appears to work well in terms of increased engine efficiency. ICA also worked well.

Does anybody remember what damage was caused to cylinder heads by ICA and the process that caused it? I seem to remember that Vauxhalls were given a hard time by the product.

Any idea's as to its likely mode of action?

Makes you wonder with all these aftermarket petrol additive thingies, like injector cleaners. Most just say :"add contents to petrol tank" and give absolutely no clue as to proper (sic) concentrations...
Do they work, or is it the placebo effect ...

I have spent the last couple of weeks searching for an Xara TD around 1997/8. I am told that "there are plenty about" - so where are they then? Read more

I visited the Science Museum today. They have an interesting display of old cars and a number of cutaway engines - including the current 2.0 16v 4cyl and 3.0 24 V6 units.

My question is HOW on earth do you change the spark plugs - they appear to be burried at least 6" below the rocker cover.

I don't own an Alfa but was gobsmacked as to how difficult this apparently simple task appeared to be. How much would a dealer charge to do the change?

Any comments chaps? Read more

I must have a peek at my son's GTV 2L twin spark to address your question about access to plugs on the Alfa. However, back in the early seveties I had a Peugeot 404 with quite a clever crossflow head, having hemispherical combustion chambers, and with the valves operated by pushrods. The 404's plugs were buried deep in tubes in the rocker covers and were accessed by means of a special box spanner. I wonder if the Alfa is the same.
