We took the car into a halfords/aa garage. (Are these people any good?) and the guy there said he reckoned the noise is coming from the top end, so this weekend i'm going to open up the rocker cover and check for play in the camshaft. Also, he too like diesel reckoned that there might be an oil pressure problem. One point, the oil filter is a Bosch are these any good, also, the garage put Duckhams QRX in apparently, I don't think that stuff is any good, is it worth doing another oil change with a Purflux oil filter and Magnatec/Mobil 1?
Cheers
Andy

I've bought a Citroen for my sister. although she doesn't actually know it yet..
It wasn't my fault, it was the salesman's kids which did it........
Seriously though, I was driving, and subsequently bought, a Xantia Diesel Estate today. They're really quite surprisingly good and quite amazing value.
So, from here on in, I agree with that nice Mr. Woollard about Citroens.

Now here's a thing...
My Father collected the car for me. Normally he drives an XJS automatic. He drove said Citroen Xantia TD some 100 miles and loved it.
My sister is over the moon with the thing.

Anyone ,directly or indirectly, had experience of problems arising through accidents when trailer's attached. I tow a nearly new medium size goods trailer on a regular basis, all legal, (particularly in relation to car weight ). Must they be 'disclosed'to your insurance co. or are they by virtue of being coupled classed as automatically underthe car insurance? I don't want to run any risks which might ultimately prove uninsured withthe potential for horrendous costs.
Yes , the answer might lie in the policy doc. or by ringing my co, but would still like some hard facts.

Play safe and inform your insurer. Get the name of the person you tell with a date and time.
Two possible outcomes:
1. They charge you extra for cover (mine, Direct Line, didn't) and you're then covered against the horror of an uninsured accident.
2. They don't charge you, but you've told them so you're then covered against the horror of an uninsured accident.

Yes, we are indeed. HJ had it, and sent it to me by mistake. It doesn't affect Macs, so my desktop machine was ok (even though Virex checks every email, this is a very new one. Remember to keep your virus list up to date!). And I don't download emails onto my PC laptop; instead, I use my service provider's webmail facility to look at emails on their server, and then either delete or hold them there until I get into work again.
Incidentally, each of the emails I've had containing this virus (and one of them came from The Watson Family, Chris) has had the email name preceded by an underscore character -- a good means of identifying potential trouble.
Anyone had one?
I fancy a late model DTR Turbo 2 - was once the fastest diesel on the road (125bhp, 0-60 10secs, 120++ mph) Seeing as they go for about £500 I reckon this could be a good bangernomics buy. I might improve my car engineering skills too - having to fix electrical gremlins and suspension problems ;) Read more
Where's your sense of adventure?
You'll never know what you are missing ....
This thread compliments Alwyn's post re the Welsh assembly but I also thought it important enough to create a new thread from:
Last night (Friday) I left my company Christmas do about 11:30pm and got in the car to drive home. Before any comments are made, of course I'd had a few drinks, I'd had 5 cokes throughout the course of the evening...
Coming out of the hotel car park and heading towards Manchester town I was very aware of the number of people spilling out of pubs who were all around and consequently was driving 20-25 along a very wide road (30mph limit).
I saw a taxi pull over on the opposite side of the road a hundred yards or so in front of me but didn't think too much of it. The two guys in it, got out (neardise onto the pathway) and then as bold as brass without even looking in either direction walked round the back of the car and across the road, right in front of me. I'd already noticed they weren't paying much attention and was waving my right plate over the brakes and when they did this I had to stand on the brakes and steer to avoid them. As a result I ended up with the car about 45 degrees ("North East") to the road and half on the oncoming lane which unfortunately had nothing in it (else that may have nearly hit them as well). How I missed one of these guys I will never know - the other had the sense to start running but one didn't. When I looked up even the taxi driver had his head in his hands (thank god there might have been ONE witness on my side if I had caught one of them). The guy who I nearly hit was stood in the road LAUGHING and got a bloody big mouthful from me afterwards but then told me to pee off and disappeared into the pub he was heading for in the first place.
At this moment I had been doing about 20 mph but this back up my comments previously that if someone does walk out in front of you in this way, you are not going to be able to stop whatever speed you're doing/car you're driving.
I had to sit in the car at the side of the road for a few minutes to collect myself - it'd be me who was banged up in Mr Plod's cell if I'd run him over and how would that have been my fault?
My point is, that in addition to everything that has been said on here recently, you CANNOT leave ALL the responsibility of road safety in the hands of car users. It doesn't work like that and if anything is actually making the roads an unsafer place than they already are. I just hope that noone on here ever meets a similar situation where it all happened half a second later...
Safe driving everyone

Thought of a new "bumper" sticker, in the style of those irritating "Baby on Board" things how about a free round the neck badge with every pint saying,
"Danger P*sshead on foot!"
I seldom buy a car but I've bought a new Zafira 2DTi recently and when I got a chance to examine it several things struck me.
The engine compartment is really impressively tightpacked. I've no ambitions for home maintenance but this would kill any such stone dead. If there is front end damage the bill would be expensive, GM have tucked in the fan and the turbo intercooler right behind the bumper member and the compartment must be expected to run hot since there is a neat insulating jacket over the battery.
The "deluxe" front seats have a strange panel at the front which is free to slide forward about several inches, it looks like it's meant to support your leg further towards your knee but it seems more comfortable if left alone.
The side mouldings look like they are made of soft rubber but in fact they are hard plastic with an aggressive end profile. Together with a strong detente it means that I'll have to be particularly careful in car parks.
Well, at least it's got an honest chain cam drive - bye bye GF25 , GF50 and all that. Read more
The adjustable bolster under the thigh is a fantastic idea and common on exec mobiles such as BMW's I think. For people like myself with 36" inside leg it helps but also for people with short legs as this can be just as awkward having a fixed seat.
"A product of councils given a budget to use or lose on cycle facilities."
I get really angry about the waste of money on cycle lanes. These seem to fall into two categories.
1. A green stripe painted down the side of the road. What a pointless waste of money! Most of the time they are full of parked cars and even if they weren't I can't see the difference between this and just cycling down the side of the road.
2. If you are really lucky a section of pavement will be set aside for the use of cyclists. Again useless to anyone who wants to get anywhere. Now you have to stop at every side road and the cycle path will be full of meandering pedestrians throwing themselves into your path at every available moment.
After trying to use some of the cycle paths on my route to work I quickly gave up and started to use the road again. Cars are safe and predictable compared with pedestrians.

OK Chris, where do you think "spondulicks" comes from? My dictionary gives it as 19th century, origin unknown. Any ideas?
