Update on 306 woes - Andrew Petterson
We took the car into a halfords/aa garage. (Are these people any good?) and the guy there said he reckoned the noise is coming from the top end, so this weekend i'm going to open up the rocker cover and check for play in the camshaft. Also, he too like diesel reckoned that there might be an oil pressure problem. One point, the oil filter is a Bosch are these any good, also, the garage put Duckhams QRX in apparently, I don't think that stuff is any good, is it worth doing another oil change with a Purflux oil filter and Magnatec/Mobil 1?

Cheers

Andy

Andy

I suggest you sell the 306 at auction,

contradictory diagnoses and 50% of value repairs are then avoided.

I realise that with entry costs and fees you may not recover the original £3,600, but you may be able to buy a less problematic car with the proceeds.

John

John has a point but if the "boys" hear a rattly engine in the hall you'll be lucky to see a grand for it.

I still think you need to take it to a Peugeot independent specialist, like the one mentioned in the previous thread.

As a matter of interest I have a 1996 in for service today at 60,000 miles, perfect engine as you would expect.

If you were travelling Scotland - London thinking about repairing it contact me for a FOC 3rd opinion on the way down. I'm only 15mins off the A1.

How do they 'reckon' an oil pressure problem?

Did they measure the pressure or not? Too much 'reckoning' going on in the industry. The trouble is, half the 'proffesionals' don't have the necessary equipment and start making guesses at your expense. Oil pressure testers are not exactly rocket science, nor will the purchase of one by a garage bring the recession on.

Find someone reputable that will give a proper diagnosis based on some hard facts using up-to-date equipment and practices. I would even go so far as to suggest you won't get this at Halfords! Air freshener, or hot air, maybe.

Spend a few quid on petrol and go and see Dave W.

If you do decide to auction it, haggle for "proper" commission otherwise they will charge joe punter 10% , whereas I've seen dealers selling a 30k car for fifty quid. (ok these guys put through a lot of cars)

Make sure you get a reserve price on it which you are happy with, as they will often tell punters that one can't be set.
Something like £100 flat fee sounds about right to me plus the entry fee. Worth a go though, if it doesn't sell it's only the entry fee £15? down the drain.
