I am a Brit living in the land of cheap petrol (US) we are looking to buy a late eighties or early nineties Bentley Turbo. Any model recommendations would be greatley appreciated. Are the electronics complicated? is the transmission British or a US product?

Randolph,

I concur absolutely with your advice on service history, independant inspection, and contacting the RROC, as I have already advised Eleanor by email.

Can't speak from personal knowledge of the situation in the United States, but in UK there certainly are specialists outside the dealer network who are more than able to carry out all aspects of service and repair, certainly up to mid-'90s vehicles. Indeed, Rolly-Royce Motors have had several important cars restored by independant specialists, including the Silver Ghost AX1, and 'Olga' the prototype R-Type Continental. I have a nasty feeling that the importance of the older cars to the company and the dealer network may be reduced post BMW/VW ownership - only time will tell.

Hi all,

I have a really annoying squeak coming from the back of my astra - it seems to do it while driving along bumpy roads etc or when coming off the drive etc.

It sounds like I have a family of talkative chipmunks on the parcel shelf but after further inspection its seems I have not.

Ive tried putting tape round the parcel shelf pins, checked the boot is shut tight with no movement, nothing seems loose, but its still there, and its still annoying me. Its not a really loud noise nor is it always there - just happens every so often, sometimes worse than others.

Any ideas or suggestions of how I can stop it?

The vehicle has 160k miles, I am experiencing poor starting, rough idle and less power when picking up speed. I have changed the Exhaust manifold oxygen sensor but the symptons persist. Could the problem be the tempreature sensor? I do not trust the local dealer who has a bad track record. I have never found a third party workshop manual for these cars. Read more

These cars are so hideously complicated - take it to a competant dealer!

I have recently had some warranty work (used car) carried out by a well known Rover main dealer in SE London.

I had a lower radiator outlet pipe split.
I took the car to the dealer and explained the exact fault - I even drew a diagram for them! (I knew the precise details because I had to effect emergency repairs in order to get the vehicle to the garage)

They charged me for a radiator pressure-test , saying this was a requirement of the insurers, before they would agree to the claim. I checked with the warranty company who said they did not ask for any diagnostic work.

I am disputing the garage fee ( 0.4 hour @ £64 per hour) saying that the test was unnecessary and in any event, they would have seen the fault if they had simply removed the bottom hose--work that they have already been paid for.

It would seem that diagnostic work is not covered by the warranty, but this is not stated in the policy document.
Has anyone any experience of similar problems? Read more

I'm 'near' London. Maybe I can up my rates.

Does anybody know if the claims made by Shell for their new Optimax petrol are justified? It suggests your car will go better but I remamber a special petrol introduced by Shell once before and it damaged engines........ Read more

Who was driving - speed camera loopholes !

I am told that some people with 'points' on their licence ask friends or relatives to say that they {the friens / relative} were driving.

The ?guilty person may pay the fine, of say their 90 year old grandmother who has not driven for 15 years ? {but has kept up their medical certificate}, but granny takes the points.

Or perhaps more commonly, say the ?innocent? wife has taken the points for him, he insures the car 'any driver' the insurance will remain largely unaffected ? certainly cheaper than insuring a named driver with 9 points? In this way too, then anyone can 'take the points' for the speding driver.

Speeding drivers keep their licences clean and insurance low, they insure their car as any driver and then anyone can take the points for them.

I assume that many get away with this? No problems hiring cars either this way.

Perhaps some people even take a driving test and apply for a licence in a false name - used to put the points on?

Clearly the police and government know that this goes on and perhaps other similar ?scam?s, but they do nothing about it.

Does this not prove that speed cameras are used mainly for generating revenue and have little to do with road safety?

Richard T (above) mentions dragging things out beyond the 6 months limitation on proceedings for speeding but bear in mind it is open to the prosecution to lay an information with the Mags Clerks within the 6 months then they can play with it for years.
Likewise a Notice of Intended Prosecution sent to the last Recorded owner defeats the 14 day rule.
Years ago we used to get warrants of arrest for flashers all called John Doe because we didnt know his name but we did know when and where he did it?
Getting another driver to take the rap, wow you're really talking big time if you get caught. Hello Ronnie and Myra.........

I read HJ's comment on the need to let the engine idle on a Audi 2.5d. in the Telegraph today. How long should you do this for to prevent turbo wear? I am now sold on diesels after 14 months with a Xantia 1.9 turbo. I hanker after an Audi A6 2.5 diesel Avant Would I be better of with a Mercedes diesel if I were to upgrade to the "prestige" class. Trouble is the price of the 300 and 320 diesel estates may me wince compared with the alteratives.

Thanks everyone. Having recently become the proud owner of a my first turbo diesel I knew that you have to let the oil cool. The question was - how long ? I'm pleasantly surprised at how short a period of time it is. Any long, high speed runs tend to be followed by bumbling through town, so as long as I can avoid motoway service stations it sounds like there's nothing to worry about. I'd just like to add how useful and helpful this "phorum" is.

Mid 90s, cheap and fast.

I am considering buying a circa ?95 Rover 800 fastback, as they are so cheap and indeed fast.
Dear all in the back room,

I cannot decide between a Rover 800 Vitesse {2 litre 4 cyl turbo , 200 BHP} and an 827 Sterling {24 valve 2.7 litre auto ? Honda Engine and power train}

The 2 litre in slightly more economical and faster, however a turbo charged Rover 2 litre engine will be more ?stressed? than the Honda 2.7 litre normally aspirated unit.

I would assume at that age that a turbo will be nearing the end of its life? The Vitesse is perhaps more likely to have been thrashed, has expensive low profile tyres and lowered {road humps !!!} lowered suspension.

The petrol and insurance are not a problem. Which is likely to give me the least problems?

Any suggestions please, on the Rover 800 above, or can you suggest any other motors that are as well equipped, large, cheap fast?

Thanks Tom Read more

Get a Saab 9000 2.3 Turbo (200hp). Alternatively the 2.3t (note small "t") with 175bhp (otherwise known as 2.3 ecopower). Solid as a rock, good ones have stopped depreciating. Lots of room. Safe as houses. Depending on budget, the very last 2.3 Turbo CSE Anniversaries had 225bhp (as did 2.3 Carlsson c. 1990-1991).

But then I'm biased.

I have been looking at various oils recently and have seen some quoting very wide viscosity ranges, for example SAE 10w-60. However what really interests me is the odd one that claims, SAE 0-40. How can this be? How can there be an oil that can possibly claim to be frictionless, or am I missing something?

Any help welcomed ....... Mike Read more

The Crime action team only takes a couple of hours every two months. We have the local police inspector, (good chap), social workers, ( Hmmm); Officers from the Councils Social Inclusion Unit (More Hmmm) Neighbourhood watch folks etc.

I don't really know if we yet make a difference as it quite new here in
woolly-back Wales. (I can say that 'cos I am Welsh!!)

The Community Council is really a waste of time as we have no "clout" to get anything done .

Ask around. Bet you would be a valuable addition to any group.
