Is it my imagination or do these garages on newly-built houses get narrower and narrower. There was a Clio the other day parked outside a garage on a new housing estate the garage door was open and I lined the wing mirrors up with the garage sides and it would be a very tight fit indeed it would only just make the garage door opening. Now the Clio by anyones imagination is not the widest of cars how on earth does a larger car fit in these garages is beyond me. You might be able to drive in, but can you get out? Also the older one gets the more space needed to maneovre while getting out as the joint don't move too easy as one gets older. Read more

Regarding modern garage dimensions, do builders think that people put cars in them? Nearly every garage I've seen is full of junk and garden tools etc.

Remember the the tornado at Bognor a couple of years ago? The film of the garages with their roofs blown off. Not a car in sight!

I had a car die on me recently: all ignition circuits were dead and no ignition light. Lights and hazards working and central locking.
I checked fuses and fusible links and looked for loose connections.
After about an hour, the warning lights came on and the car started and ran normally.

My prime suspect is the ignition switch, although the car seems to be OK now.
Any ideas? Read more

similar thing andrew - the starter gets old and tired, and unless the contacts are close, no joy.

In 1955 there were 823 robberies in England and Wales. In year 2000 there were 95,154. And the response by The Chief Constable of North Wales, Richard Brunstrom? ?Lets crush the motorist?

He now wants road deaths treated as homicides until proven otherwise. Is it his wish to make drivers afraid of venturing out in their cars in case they become the subject of a homicide investigation should they be involved in an accident?

He says ?There is now recognition at all levels of society that the investigation of road deaths is core police work. Many road deaths should be treated as homicides until proven otherwise?

Where has this "recognition" come from? Never heard it before.

We live in a service economy. Consumer goods are cheaper than ever, but fixing them is more expensive than ever. So we can afford to buy bigger (and more) cars than before. A house with a garage of any size in the 1930s was a big deal; it said you had made it. If you had a car to put in it, that was even better.

Who says there is nothing in this life for free? I thought I had found something close to it today.........But,
A major high street tyre specialist are offering oil and filter change for £10 with Duckhams oil or £15 with semi synthetic. Any car up to 2:3L. My 10 year old Volvo 360 (two litre B200K non injection) fitted the bill. The outlet in Warrington were very obliging, ordering in a filter as they didn't have one in stock and today I went along for the job. Alas the technician was unable to release the sump nut stating it had seized solid. He broke a spanner trying to free it, and wouldn't go "all out" with a hammer incase he damaged the sump thereby causing extra expense. So my "for nothing " oil change never materialised.
What should I do now though about the seized nut. The tech' said it was alloy and wouldn't respond to a little loosening from the blow torch. I'm not adverse to having a crawl under the beast to have a look but am concerned about causing serious damage when I weild my sledge hammer.
Any suggestions?..............Oh and before you advise scrapping the car which I would love to do, It alas has proved to be a far too reliable and faithful workhorse.......... Read more

when I went to school & did metalwork (resistant materials nowadays!) you had to let copper cool naturaly to anneal it?

and as for alwyn's new sump because the brazed insert twisted out, whats wrong with brazeing it back in, or cleaning it up & welding it in if its steel? I give up, what ever happened to the old ways? give me bakers fluid & a stick of tinmans solder, a leaking brass rad, gas torch & soldering iron any day!!

Last night I saw a near accident. A woman was actually brushed by a car as she walked over a zebra crossing. The wrinkle is that this was in a Tesco carpark, i.e. not on the public highway? The lighting was poor. So what's the legal position on this sort of incident? Read more

interesting info - and for free - what a great site this is, HJ
seems to me charging £60 an hour is hardly extortionate for professional service .. and it could even look cheap compared to some dealer service rates

I have been told that Andy Bairstow is an expert on the idiosyncracies of the XM. I have been advised that there is a possible problem with the non turbo 16valve 2.0litre engine..if unmodified.due to poorly designed pistons. Can you tell me if this problem was fixed by Citroen under warranty recall? I am interested in purchasing a 1994m MK11 with 80000miles on the clock with FSH.
Would this be a safe bet,or are these cars particularly troublesome. PS
The car is a 5 speed manual. I would appreciate your advise .Cheers M Hirons Read more

Mark (Brazil, but in UK)

I'm leaving the UK and what a great time I had.

When I get back there I am going to write in here about driving on UK roads and the behaviour of the UK Police.

Good roads, fast limits, polite & helpful policemen, no kidnapping, good petrol, fast travel..................

You lot have *NO* idea how lucky you are and how it is still very good.

In 2wd I can get the tail out in a straight line, never mind a corner. In 4wd drive I've never got it to do anything interesting like that. Although I have had it airborne once or twice.
