1987 C BMW 316 requires a new rear exhaust section. I have been quoted around £20 - £30 for a replacement. However, I am interested in a stainless steel rear section as I think that they look more attractive over a longer period of time.
I would really appreciate any information on:
- Whether it is possible just to fit a stainless steel rear section, or does the whole exhaust need to be replaced?
- How to go about selecting a rear section. What will fit my car?
- Relative costs?
- Will the performance of my car improve?
- Any other pitfalls that I may have overlooked?
Thank you very much in advance
Yours

It is possible to replace just the rear section. Which type is a personal choice based on the bewildering variety of tailpipes available. At this age, your choice may be limited. Cost? Likely to be in excess of £150 for a decent one. Performance may improve slightly due to reduced back-pressure, but only by 1 or 2 bhp. Pitfalls? Only the cost based on the age of the car and the extra noise it'll make.

You can het a full stainless system, a normal one as opposed to a 'sport' one that will probably not make any difference anyway. There is a link in the FAQ section for a stainless exhaust place. You may find the rear box won't come off anyway without removing the whole lot, or the rest of it is about buggered anyway when you get under there and have a look. Stainless systems usually have straight slip on type flanges, whereas yours may have some sort of flange.

While on this subject - if the wrong size exhaust is fitted on a car can it adversely have any effect? Eg would fitting a 1500cc petrol exhaust onto a 1900 cc diesel cause a head gasket to blow?

What you have to remember when you do this (part replacement) is that the stainless steel component, being more 'noble' than the rest of the system, will cause the adjoining parts to corrode more rapidly.

No, fitting a 1500cc exhaust to a 1900cc TD will not cause the head gasket to fail.......:-))
It will just blunt the performance slightly.......
