Now that's a conversation I would pay to overhear...

Someone speaking to the Brazilian Policiar Militar explaining that I was photographed by an English Speed Camera.

That could be *really* fun.

Does anyone know where I can get a spray that looks like chrome ?
I have two small vertical lines on my old chrome bumper and I can not justify getting the whole thing rechromed ? Any ideas ? Read more

Picking up on Dan's suggestion about model shops, you can buy heat adhesive covering materials for model aircraft (Solarfilm and Profilm are two) and they are available in chrome.

You might just be able to cleverly cut them into strips to cover the original damage. The material is applied with a hot iron (mum's domestic one will do) and then shrunk using the same tool (a little hotter).

Non-motoring topic. I peeped at the site of a well-known motoring magazine last night and my virus checker, for the first time ever, said,

"This is corrupted with the W32 Nimda virus, clean now?"

Any else had this problem? Read more

I think the NIMDA likes 'always on' IIS (windows web server boxes) that aren't patched. Unless l'm mixing myself up with some other gubbins, you can get rid of this virus by turning your computer off and on again, (it lives in memory).

Help! The connection to the demister on the back window of my wife's Honda has broken off - does anyone know if a conductive adhesive or similar is available to refit it?
I don't want to have to get a new window fitted!
Many thanks in anticipation,
Peter. Read more

Thanks, everyone,- lots to think about. I'll try the cheapest fixes first, then a scrap rear window, before deliberately parking under a falling rocket! We do have comprehensive insurance, but the windows have a £40 excess, so it's a last resort. I'll let you know how I get on.
Regards,
Peter.

My Mk 4 Golf was broken into on Friday 19 October, the door handle an lock barrel prized out.
Two points
1. I am still waiting for a replacement barrel which I understand has to be programmed in Wofsburg and

2. Why is it the dealer network can't carry door handles in common colours such as black and silver to avoid delays whilst handles are sent off to paint shop.

Nothing was stolen from my car - what should have been a minor irritation is now a major problem.

The dealer suggested I contact my insurance company and get a replacement car for the duration - is it any wonder our premiums are so high

If the lock provides so little security then why load such a vulnerable part with so much technology? Read more

three weeks today since barrel ordered and still not a squeak about when new one will be forthcoming - dealer tells me I'm one of many still waiting. But that doesn't make me feel any better. I'm told its because the security is so sophisticated that it takes time to programme the lock.

Sophisticated my ....

it seems to me that vw need to have a word with themselves.

is anybody else sick of those orange street lights, you cant see the road markings, all cars look the same colour, but this is the best bit - the government put up these lights because they are half the price of white lights, but they only last half the time, so you might as well have the white ones. My Sunny1.4(1989) currently enjoys a Castrol fully synthetic oil surging thro' it's veins ,which was used at oil change(for the first time,) solely because I had a spare can designated for a recently departed Toyota.
What sort of mileage interval should I work to, to the next change. Is it reasonable to assume that the added cost of such oil and much proclaimed superiority should see something well in excess of the oft quoted 5k. interval for the standard lubricant. (for this age of car particularly I guess.)
The car does not suffer the 'school run syndrome 'and usually reaches working temps. with considerable motorway work of late. It has always been regularly serviced and is coming up to a genuine 60k on the clock. Gem of an engine! Read more

error in first letter of 00.23am nov 6 . should read 'semi-synthetic oil' not 'fully synthetic.' sorry folks - too rushed and I'm new to this job.

We (that is we on this site) tend to be rude about Ladas and their fans.

Perhaps we should remember that where and when the choice was not between some no-parts-servicable-by-user, pressed-from-tinfoil-and-plastic electronic box of tricks and a Lada, but between a Lada and no car at all, very many people made considerable and varied sacrifices to possess one. In the same circumstances, so would most of us!

At least (except for the unfortunate Samara digression) they drove at the right end for roundabouts! Read more

from now on i will leave off anything about ladas (unless someone asks, but i highly doubt it), i will only look at this website, and maybe put on serious questions.

Saw an article in our local paper tonight (tucked away on Page 8) which refers to Essex County Council Environment & Transport Committee being in favour of retaining tolls on the Dartford Crossing beyond the end of next year. Apparently this will bring in 'an additional £50million' to be shared on transport schemes in Essex, north Kent and the M25 corridor. Tolls will remain at £1 for cars, lorries £1.80 or £2.90 but only £1 between 10pm & 6am, motorcycles free.
This has been mooted by the Government and is out for consultation, CLOSING DATE NOVEMBER 7th!!!!!
The first thing that annoys me, is, why the apparent secrecy to date? Are they really that frightened that someone might notice before it's too late, which it almost certainly is.
The second point is that when the original tunnel was built it was just a link between Essex & Kent and the tolls would end when it was paid for, or so we were told. Then it was discovered that we needed a second tube to take the traffic so the tolls would stay to pay for it but the tolls would go when it was paid for. Once the second tube was opened suddenly the M25 conveniently, for the Government, because they didn't have to build a Thames crossing, appeared at either end. Then of course the traffic increased to such levels that we needed an additional bridge so the tolls stayed to pay for it, surprise, surprise! But the promise was that the tolls would be lifted at the end of 2002 when all the costs would have been recouped. So now just as we can all see an end to the interminable queues at the toll-booths the tolls are going to stay. So it would appear that we are going to carry on paying endlessly, as if 35 years or so hasn't paid for it already.
My apologies if this has gone on a bit but I think I've probably bought one lane over the years and it feels like someone's just told me that I've got to carry on paying the mortgage. Read more

> Neither cheques nor credit cards are legal tender.

You know, I should say "weren't". There was a couple of changes recently, one related to the Euro and the other to the standing of E-Payments.

I didn't pay any attention, but that or another recent change may have affected it.

Before I put a second mirror to cover the blind spot, I occassionally found problems with cars concealed there. Now I never get caught out when going to overtake another vehicle as it is obvious. I am not sure why more panel vans and artics do not do the same. Read more

double mirrors on 95 model transits are spot on & wide angle bottom one is better than looking over your shoulder when pulling over to right. but.... having tried a lucas copy at 60% ford list price on the nearside I think the old saying about getting what you pay comes to mind, when using that mirrors wide angle lense the image is no where near as accurate as the OE version
