I was in Slovakia a few weeks ago and saw several whale-like Tatras lumbering about - rear engined V8s I believe.....

Hi.

I would be grateful if anyone can recommend a good clutch garage fitter. I have a problem with the clutch on my 97 Vectra and possibly need to renew the friction plate. I have lost faith in my local Vauxhall dealer and would like to take it to a good independant garage specialist.

If you can recommend a garage north of the Thames preferably (although not essential) I would be grateful.

Thanks

Don't just change the friction plate, Tony. False economy.

A full clutch kit will not be too expensive, even from Vauxhall. They are well known for aggressive parts pricing.

Mark (lost in Brazil)

I had one, which I borrowed for some time at college.

If only it hadn`t been winter, then it would have been fine - not much of a heater.

ladas are cool

i am getting sick of having all my cars, so i am thinking about keeping the lada riva, getting rid of the other cars, and going for the KIA RIO, but has anybody driven one of these cars, the local KIA dealer is selling them from £4995 on the road, so i dont really care about comfort etc, as long as the warranty is there. please please please dont think i am just talking, as if i was making this up i would be talking about getting a £20 grand car, not a £5 grand car. And any way, you`re wrong. Its currently 18:33 on my computer, and I strongly suspect that`s not what the forum will show.

ladas are cool

tonight i was parked in the morrisons supermarket carpark, and somebody opened their door and hit the rear door of my lada, the good thing is that my lada had no damage, but the edge of the door on the other car had dented quite badly, and it was a (V) mercedes c-class, so it looks like my car is more robust. I am about to buy my 3rd punto. OK, we all have our odd, little perversions - don't we?Motorpoint seem to offer a good deal but if anyone has dealt with them I would value their opinion.I know that the cars are not UK sourced and have only 12 month's warranty but do they have any peculiarities I should look out for.Any advice, knowledge, whatever gratefully received. Thank you Read more

As already stated have a good look around for dents, etc. Make sure it has the keys - if new. Additionally make sure you are familiar with the model you are buying as you may only notice bits and pieces are missing after you have left the place, though you are technically buying "as seen".

I bought a Mondeo unseen, I was going away the day it arrived at Motorpoint so I had a flying visit to make sure it was exactly what I thought I was getting. The car was factory fresh as it still had all the protective wrappers on. However, during a cursory inspection, I noticed part of the armrest storage was missing and a large black plastic cover was placed on the back seat. Me being naive, I thought that will be sorted a couple of weeks later when I collected the car. The storage box component was still missing - 2 quid to replace from my nephew at Quicks - but the black plastic cover was nowhere to be seen. I consoled myself that it had been placed where it belonged. It turns out it was the battery cover and guess what? That was absent too. Again that was cheap to replace.

What does give pause for thought is the apparent indifference that appears to be given to preparing your valuable purchase. Don't get me wrong, I made a substantial saving and I am happy with it and the tenner it has cost me for the parts pales into insignificance when compared to the £3.5k I saved. The nagging doubt is if the "valeters" are careless with trim bits what are they doing when actually driving the vehicles around the site?

Help Please. My son is determined to buy a 1600cc manual Type 2 Bay window model. I know nothing about these,as he wants me to look at it, so would appreciate any advice on faults or problems with the bodywork mainly. The person selling is prepared to put it on a ramp to inspect the underside. Please don't talk him out of it. I know he's going to buy one!.

Don't know what junior's budget is for the VW, but it might save a lot of worry if you lent/gave him the extra money to buy a new one. At least one company imports these aircooled vans and minibuses unofficially from Mexico, including a bare version that can be fitted out. They're not wildly expensive ...They also sell aircooled Beetles for about £7000

Unfortuately some ejit has hit my car when its been in a car park and as a result theres a couple of 3 inch square patches where the paint has practically come off (Thunder Grey Celica 190). Ive sanded the worst of the red paint from the other car off but Im wondering whats the best way to get it touched up and looking new. I tried T-Cutting a car with metallic paint once before and made a right hash of it and the touch up pencils you can get from Toyota would not leave a good finish as the area is too big ?

Its also left the paintwork uneven in some places ..(i.e some is scuffed, some the metallic lacquer has come off etc )and Id rather get it done properly on me pride and joy

Would a dealership touch it up for me? Or are there specialist garages? Ive got the little tin of mathcing paint that came with the car when I bought it? Can someone suggest any better alternatives? You have to look to see where the scuffs are but you know how when its your own car and you know its there and you cant stand it !

What I dont want to do is have a go myself ( I was never very good at art at school ) and make it worse Read more

I have read with interest the various threads over the last few months about air con. When I choose my next car, it likely to be 3 to 4 years old ex fleet and not more than £5K. I intend running the car for another 3 years (30K). For the first time many of the cars falling into this category have air con.

I can?t help wondering if air con may be more trouble and expense than it?s worth in these circumstances. What do people think? Read more
