Thinking about an old (i.e. H-reg or something similar) Mercedes-Benz estate to replace our Peugeot 505, but worried about running costs and prices for parts. Any advice? Read more
All these threads about tyres has reminded me:
Is there any chart or conversion to quickly compare rim sizes and therefore the appropriate tyres to retain the overall diameter of the wheel.
I understand the rim diameter in inches, the XXX/XX size being the width of the tyre itself in millimeters and the second figure giving tyre wall (rim to edge?) as a % of the tyre width. Am l right so far?
For example if l wanted to change a 14" rim 185/65 tyre to 16" rim what XXX/XX figure should l be looking at to keep the overall wheel size?
I have tried working it out manually but what with the rim being in inches then adding 2 X the % of the width in millimeters it is frankly pissing me off and l don't really know what l'm doing.
Can anyone help?
dan
P.S. Can anyone also tell me of any ill effects from increasing the width of the tyre (regardless of rim size) to say 225mm for example? Read more
Cheers guys,
I spent ages trying to find this info.
Thanks again.

All,
Be warned about Daewoo's warning of 4 years/40,000 on the cambelt on the 1.5 DOHC Engine. This a Vauxhall inspired unit!
Mate of mine just had his go @ 38k. Daewoo wern't interested as the car was 4 years and 3 months old. Repairs cost almost £1300!!
I know of another Deawoo car where the belt broke @ 45k.
Hope these messages from real life serve as warning to Daewoo drivers! Read more
Interesting info Robert. I've just taken on a 5yr old Daewoo with that same engine, it has only covered 27,000 miles.
Despite my advice the guy is hesitating about having the belt done on time rather than mileage.
Might just show him this!

For those of you who live in the south, I have just returned from a day trip to France.
In the supermarket at Cite Europe, they are selling Mobil 1 (4 litres) for £20 (195 Francs), compare that to over £30 in Halfords !!
Also for the same price is Shell Helix Ultra (Synthetic) Turbo Diesel but 5 litre size Read more
The Mobil 1 in France is not the same as the UK oil. In the UK, the viscosity is 00-40 but in France it's 10-40 as far as I remember. This will account for some of the price difference and it's why I didn't buy it + they don't sell the turbo diesel version. But I agree with others - I have found a lot of bargains over the years in French and Spanish hypermarkets.

Has anyone else had their Civic diagnosed as having 'a slightly sticking throttle body' and been quoted by dealer £3-400 to recify.
Civic bought new august 1998-27000miles.
Honda offering to pay 50% labour but this still leaves a bill for £265.36
Any advice welcomed. Read more
This is a problem with Carina Es, acknowledged by Toyota with an extended total four year warranty.

Re Volvo 960 24V
I am thinking of buying another Volvo - I have a 940GLE estate
Early 90's 960 24v saloons appear a great bargin at £1500 to £2000.
Driven steadly, on mainly motorway runs, what MPG might I get? I can get low 30s out of my 940.
Do any readers own 204 BHP 24V 960s, what do they think, what should I look out for?
What do people think of the auto box - any good?
Thanks

I am pretty sure the 6 pot engine is a Renault (and it is a straight 6!). Volvo did use a 6 cylinder truck engine as well which is a 2.4 Volkswagen engine as fitted to the 740, 760 and 940 cars.
The petrol tank is what intrudes into the boot and you're right, it is pretty ridiculous for such a big car isn't it?!
I am thinking of getting a two to three year old Honda Aerodeck estate in a few months time. (1.8 Vtec if poss.)are there any satisfied (or annoyed)owners out there who can advise me on the wisdom of this? My wife's Honda Civic (G Reg.) hasn't missed a beat in 6 years, so I'm hoping that Aerodeck will be just as reliable.
Thanks in anticipation,

The company fleet has a Honda Aerodeck 1.6 estate which has run well for over 2 years apart from a rear wheel bearing that was noisy from day one, diagnosed by me and denied by the dealer until a recent service when they replaced it under warranty. By this time the noise was so loud that conversation was difficult at town speeds. The previous driver was allowed to spec the car and went for leather and air-con instead of the bigger engine. It's a nice drive, feels solid if underpowered and has plenty of boot capacity.
Can someone explain to me what is going on here:
Price of a new Daewoo Leganza (Mondeo sized approx) 2.0SX as far as Daewoo is concerned: £12,495
As far as Fords of Winsford are concerned (and several similar retailers) £8.100 for the same spec, BRAND NEW car.
There is a difference here of over 4 grand - what the hell is going on? I can only think Daewoo are taking the pee somewhere along the line. HJ commented recently that Daewoo were bringing in Matiz's for £1,750. Who'd buy a car straight from Daewoo when it can be bought so much cheaper elsewhere. Also it must have a horrific effect on used values of 1-2 year old Daewoos...
Can the Joe Public Esq. buy these cars direct from the importers at these ridiculously low prices? Read more
I'm not knocking the koreans, I have just seen the new Hyundai Coupe.
Wow, a great car.
And for Mondeo money too.
I know which one I would prefer.
And that's the Hyundai in case you think I am being sarcastic.
With a min 2.0 engine!

I own a 96N Micra 1.0 S, which currently has Dunlop SP Sport D8 175/60 R13 H tyres (pity my car can't do the 130 m.p.h. the tyres are rated at!!!), which may need replacing early next year. I know that the car can take the 155/70 R13 S/T type, but am unsure which type to replace the main set of four. The spare is the same type as the other four and has not been used as yet.
I have noticed the large price difference between these types of tyre, and would prefer to go for the 155/70 R13 S/T type. Is it safe to go for them as I would have to use the 175/60 spare if one of the new ones suffered a puncture?
Any comments about which makes to look at are welcome. Please note I will be only using the car for private use (say approx 2000 -3000 miles per year max.) and would like tyres that give a comfortable (and quiet?) ride with reasonable handling characteristics and wear rates.

Andrew - me again. I have always had good service from local ATS, but I should think it depends on the commitment of the manager as much as anything else. What is certain is that it pays to shop around, as there can be huge price variations for the same tyre.
Incidentally the difficulty of getting hold of a set of tyres exactly matching original spec. can be a strong deterrent, never mind price!
Just read a story in todays paper about a guy with a Porsche Boxster that was stopped by the police thirty times in thirty days It doesn't say why he was stopped, but it does seem rather excessive.
Anyone else out there with a performace car had the same kind of treatment?

Nick,
I try hard to be pro-police but your story, is as simple as it sounds, would make me explode.
It is just the sort of thing that could turn the pros into antis, PR disaster type stuff.
PS. There are soon going to be enough confessed Cotswold based/routed backroomers for a separate section!

But the Volvo 900 series estates are bigger, better, faster and just as rust proof.
Merc has better image, but I would go for a Volvo 900 anytime, the 2.9 24V 960 pertrol has leather plus all the toys - just got the MPG to watch.
940 more MPG, 940 HPT almost as quick, massive old style bumpers o 90 - 94 {ish} models, later models went for flimsey modern bumpers - that can't take bumps !
