Saw the efolowing ad the other week:
"Volkswagen Polo for Sale, in mint condition, call ..... "
Polo, mint, get it?
Anyone seen any others? Not sure if the above was intended.

I may be getting older but I find these new numbers confusing.
DA51 DEL could be easily mistaken for D451 DEL, couldn't it ?? There are many examples like this but can cameras or the general public distinguish these at a distance ? Why isn't there a space between the first 4 characters such as
DA 51 DEL - surely it's obvious ???
Also....
Is it true that digital cameras can't read number plates as on Motorbikes where the first few characters are directly above the second set ? Anybody tried this ? Read more
Ian's right. It's OOO not zero, zero, zero. OO was an Essex registration. My dad had an Anglia (c'61 or '62) OO 3577. Plenty of MOO's and BOO's about so I'm sure OOO was used.

John

I have mixed feelings about it. Corruption annoys and offends me. IMO, if you have a law you enforce it, or you don't have the law.
On the other hand I have escaped a number of tickets with bribes.
I think I'm just going to have to focus on accepting my own confusion and hypocrisy.
Conversation about a week ago. I'd left my car double parked outside a bar, intending to only be in there a minute or two, but predictably it didn't work out that way.
After an hour I left the bar to find my car attached to a policeman.
Policeman (P): you can't double park in this street
Mark (M): Don't speak Portuguese, no idea what you're saying at all
P: You get a fine for parking here
M: not one word, you could be speaking chinese
P: Or I can have your car towed away (yeah right, too hi-tec for Rio)
M: Its my birthday in February
P: Give me your driving licence
M: I'm going to buy myself a Ferrari
P: You can get another fine if you don't show me your licence
M: I'm thinking a red one. Did I mention I don't speak Portuguese ?
P: Are you English ?
M: Yes (oops, forgot, don't understand/speak portuguese)
P: I like beer
M: Me too
P: I *really* like beer
M: Me too
P: It makes me forget things
M: ?
P: Like tickets.......
M: How much beer do you like ?
P: 6 or so usually, unless I have a lot of things to forget
M: I suppose it takes about 10 if you have a lot to forget ?
P: More like 15 !
So, I gave him the 3 quid and we both left happy.
Is it just my bad luck, or are the roads getting fuller of nails screws etc . In the last couple of years I have had 5 punctures (4 repairable ) in 20.000miles. I dont remember having this level of problem in the past! Read more
I thought that was Sod's Law.

One thing i've always wondered when i've been driving around....
Is it better, when stuck at lights or whatever, to put the car into neutral or is it ok to just stay with the clutch down? which is better for the gearbox or is there no difference?
similarly - when slowing down etc, I tend to go through the gears since i find it gives better control over braking, but can this put adverse stress on the 'box too? Am I better off using just the brakes? My driving instructor taught me to not go through the gears - but he said that in days of old they did used to teach students to go through the gears like I now do.
Also, has any of you out there done the Advanced Licence? I was thinking of applying to my local IAM and doing the test, since hopefully it will knock the price of my rediculously high insurance (£1300 tpft) down a bit (i'm only 19).
Cheers,

My father bet me he could change gear without using the clutch but by matching engine speed to road speed(?)
Of course I didn't believe him, twas rather spooky to see it done. (Very old Sierra).
heard a rumour that the new police radios being issued cause allsorts of interference - one such example is the breath test machine (nowadays an electric box) often give false readings with the new police radio's nearby...
so if you get knicked for drunk driving make sure you get a proper blood test done...
it would be interesting to run some tests and see if they also interfere with speed entrapment kit... Read more

Doesn't work (404)
The correct link is far too long to post, so just go to
www.bt.com
Then look for a link labelled "Police" and then take it from there.

Does anyone know where I can obtain a noise reduction kit? I believe Acoustikit is no longer in business. Read more
Dont spend a lot of money its not worth anything. You dont say what year the car is, but i will presume you have an earlier model without any damping under the bonnet.
go to a scrap yard and see if you can get a genuine VAG diesel underbonnet liner. This will reduce noise noticeably. Next go to www.falcon-acoustics.co.uk and buy some 2mm dedshete pads. USe thse at doubel thickness and stick to the bonnet before you fit the liner.
Most of the cabin noise comes throught the firewall. Covering this is difficult, unless you take the engine out.
Also, if you have a K&N, take it out. THese things make horrible induction noise and dont filter properly.

Ok - you've bought a new car but you're worried about expensive repairs so you want to get some warranty/MBI - who is the best outfit to buy this from? Any good/bad experiences of the various contenders? Read more
As with any insuance based product, make sure you read and accept the small print. Glad to see the positive comments re:Car Care Plan - they are indeed quick and efficient.
It would not be normal to have the catalyst covered - I for one have never seen a catalyst replaced under a MBI type warranty.

Does anyone else have a renault with the (otherwise great) newish 1.6 16valve petrol thats lumpy at idle. It doesnt sound like its misfiring but the thing can be felt shaking through the whole car, and you can visibly see it move on its mountings with the bonnet open! It goes like stink and is great on fuel, has only done 11000miles and is otherwise fine. Just wish it would idle smoothly. Anyone else experienced this? Read more
David - I've heard stories about the shortcomings of virtually every make on the road including, dare I say, Rollers. So is your clear antipathy to Renault based on your own unfortunate experiences or on hearsay?
I'm puzzled.
Why can i not sale my 306 GTi6 ?
It's been advertised in the Autotrader and various online sites but there has been no response.
It's a R/97 (later shape) with 53'000 miles and full peugeot history, Black.
The Price £ 7250.
Price guides say: ( i know these are useless but anyway....)
Parkers £ 8150 private sale
What car £ 9350 private sale
I thought i would be fighting people off for this car with its glowing reputation and sensible price but i was wrong.
Any idea's

I'm not bucking the market.
Simply looking at what other sellers are pricing their cars and then adjusting the price accordingly.
You will not find another GTi6 below £ 7000 with similar spec in the ex mart or auotrader.
The Auction price £ 6000 - £ 6500 would trade price so 6995 would be a fair price privately.As mentioned earlier dealers still ask £ 8500 - 9500 for a simsilar car.
And no it wont pass Porsche's in a straight line but on a twisty A-road it could give some supercars a hard time ( check out EVO test's ).

Yeah, not mine either. It's a game played by crossword enthusiast sub-editors.
