I have a 1994 golf driver 3 door to which i would like to fit electric windows (with vw switches etc so it doesn't look like a bodge job).

Has anyone ever done this before, or do you know what it entails and where could i get the bits from ? Read more

The holes left behind can be made clean by the "grommet" or finisher as standard on all golfs with electric windows.

I was driving along this morning, doing the 30mph spped limit, when i noticed a copper, hiding in a bush with a speed camera. Is this legal? i myself obviously didnt get a ticket, but i would imagine the bloke doing about 50 in his M3 the other way prob did, i am not condoning speeding, but is it right for them to hide? and just out of intrest, how long does it take to get a ticket through and what is the fine?

cheers

Remember - if you're done by a rozzer as opposed to a camera he will give you the NIP verbally!

A mate runs a Rover 820 as part of his "bangernomics" philosophy but has become attached to the car. It has just failed it's MOT on emissions and was told it needs new injectors (multipoint system?) at a cost of £800, obviously out of the question to him.

It's a 91 model with "only" 80k and he'd like to keep it, so could any kind soul recommend a fuel injection independent in the Heathrow area or other tips to get the car back within limits?

Cheers

A while ago there was a tread regarding the way a local authority has to go about reducing a speed limit. I have used the search facility but can't find it . I seem to remember there was a website with the rules and regulations. Can anybody help please? Read more

I am thinking of buying my company car next month when they get rid.

Its a Vectra 1.8 SXI in blue with about 23000 on the clock.

What should I offer ? The book price seems rather high for this car.

Brian,
No jokes about the Vectra from me. I think they are brilliant.....
Although mine is a diesel.
Doom Blue Mike!!!!!!! so is mine.
I just take all this with a dignified silence about Vectra's.
Hundreds of thousands of us can't all be wrong.
And J.D. power surveys..... I would as soon believe Saddam Hussein.

What about bringing back the lad from Manchester who rode bikes.

Always struck me as a northen Mike Brewer {of CH4's driven}.

Much better than the current lot - what was his name anyway? Read more

In a few weeks, here in the bleek North at least, I will need to put 'anitfreeze' in my washer bottle.

The warning on the container says "Keep off paint work" - however the roof and screen pillars etc get covered with the stuff - diluted of course.

Will the paint work be damaged over time with this product? Read more

I guess the question relates to the fact that if you put additive in at the concentration recommended in winter it costs a fortune and you still have frozen washers in extreme temperatures.

Up here in the frozen northern wastes I find that if I use the washer additive at the recommended dose for winter motoring there are also unpleasant smeary side effects on a hot screen, possibly due to the concentration of other additives, plus the smell is oh so unpleasant.

What I do is go to a chemists, one supplying commercial laboratories is better and cheaper as the local pharmacist will think you are an alcoholic. Buy a winchester of iso propyl alcohol , or propan-2-ol. Make up the mixture at the normal strength of washer additive, add an additional few% of the ipa and unless its ridiculous, like -24C then its not a problem.

If you really want to be scientific maybe you could make up different strengths and see at what level it freezes in the domestic freezer which is at least @ minus 18C. In fact I might do that myself and let you know the result. But I have never had any problem with paintwork, wiper rubbers whatever. But all you are trying to do is get the alcohol content up to the level that the manufacturer says is good for low temperatures but at a lower cost.

Maybe a proper chemist has an answer on freezing point and alcohol content?

Hi all,

After all the events over the week it seems that this world isn't all it's cracked up to be, but hey, it's what it is so let's make the best of it !

I've been nattering to a local lad, Jamie is his name. He is the proud owner of a 'Y' plate Honda XR8 S moped. He's owned it for about 6 weeks and he loves it to bits, so he tells me. We chatted about what it cost him to buy, and the cost of running it. Here are the figures:

Cost of moped £1600.
Insurance £300 per year
Tax £15 per year
Fuel £4.40 per tank
Mpg ? About 120 !

It looks the business to be honest with you, apart from when it rains when it can get a bit unpleasant. But he's got his independance and that's got to be worth something. When in Belgium what strikes me is that everyone has one, so why is this country fascinated with the car ? ( says he with three cars in the family ).

My point ? well if i worked in my local area, i'd sell my car and buy one ! The only thing that'd put me off is the 35mph max speed and the puny noise it makes, but i'd put up with that when i'd be saving all that money that i'd be paying out for my car !

Rgds,

Ash. Read more

Hi Bill,
Sorry for the late reply but I have been in hospital.
The bike I use is actually 233cc and quite capable of 70 mph+, with a reasonable acceleration.
I refused, not too long ago, to sell a 50cc restricted scooter to someone who wanted it to commute along a single lane (each way) road carrying heavy traffic at 50 mph or more. They would not have lasted a week and I did not want their death on my concience. Too low a power can be more deadly than too much.
Keep safe
Regards
Brian
