I have 1996 Discovery with usual twin sunroofs. Has done 35,000 used mainly for towing caravan. New sunroof fitted June 1999 because the rubber seal was leaking. Just two years later the new sunroof is leaking again. Told this is a common problem, main dealer are unable to reseal without fitting new roof light.
Landrover will not supply a rubber gasket which would probably cost a few quid. The cost of a complete new sunroof is approx. £250 plus VAT plus fitting. Somewhere in the region of £340. WHAT A RIP OFF. Anybody else have this problem, any answers? Read more
Just travelled back westbound on the M27 from Portsmouth area towards Southampton. Just after junction 9 a series of 50mph temporary limits were displayed on the overhead signs. There were no roadworks etc to provide a logical reason for this reduction but I slowed down none the less. Within 3 miles, 3 patrol cars had pulled over a group of cars keeping to the original 70mph limit. This is 11:30pm at night. My question is
Do the police have a right to reduce the speed limits from 70mph for no apparent reason?
-usually I ignore the temporary signs at this time of night as often no reason for them, it was only because I had travelled eastbound a couple of hours before and seen approx 20 different patrols within a 15 mile stretch that I slowed down. Read more
Once upon a time, many years ago, I got stopped by the police not far from home for no plausible reason.
It turned out that the local police motor club was running a rally and the uniformed branch had been set the task of intercepting the contestants as an exercise in initiative.
Trouble was, my then car closely matched the description of one of the contestants.
Hi,
I have test driven a 306 XSi at my local Peugeot dealer which I want! It's on the forecourt for 10295. It's a June99 T-reg, 11K miles in blue pearlescent with a CD changer & A/C. The lowest the dealer will go is 9995 with a free service and says I have to get my own tax!
Any comments from anyone? I would think that the dealer could come down at least 500 and include the tax as well.
Any suggestions would be helpful!
Thanks,

Russ,
This sems about right for a nice spec/colour 306. They are always in demand.
If you are determined to buy this one let the dealer know you are very serious and wear him down the extra few hundred. It may take a few cups of machine coffee though!

Does anyone know what the legal situation is about liability in an accident?
A couple of years ago, i witnessed an rta. A van had pulled out into the road with the intention of turning right. He was holding up the traffic on that side of the road. i indicated that i would let him out, except the car to his right, waiting for him to move, overtook him, on the wrong side of the road (ie my side) at the same time he started to pull out.
I have at last received a form from the insurance co, asking me to provide the details of exactly what I saw. Before I do so, i just wanted to find out whether I would be opening myself up to any liability. I did not cause the accident (imo, it was the driver who overtook on the wrong side of the road).
Thanks

Whether or not you signaled to give the "OK" doesn't give the guilty party the carte blanche to disregard his/her liabilties and you are totally in the clear.
Think of it like this.
A motorist is pootling thro town and sees a pedestrian trying to cross the road and the motorist stops and gestures to the pedestrian to cross. The motorist cannot stop the cyclist/motorcyclist from driving up the inside/outside and going straight into the pedestrian who took the gesture from the motorist as a 100% OK on the carriageway gesture so took no further observations.
You have nothing to worry about.
Since we have some VW experts in the house . . .
Has anyone had trouble with Golf Mk III door electrics? If so, is it best sorted by an auto-electrician or a dealer. My local VW specialist couldn't diagnose the fault (dodgy connections in the bulkhead connectors) so I don't want to give it to them.
Also, can compression tests be done on catalyzed engines?
TIA

I drive an old 90k mile '88 VW Jetta 16v. I have had the car two years. Occasionaly there is visable blue smoke from the exhaust as the engine is started. I put this down to oil leaking into the metering head via the breather pipe. I am starting to be concerned about the general condition of the engine, in particular the valve guides and stems, and the valve stem oil seals. At a recent MOT the car recorded a HC count of 65 ppm- is this figure useful in determining how much oil is being burnt? Additionaly, despite changing the tappets and cam chain, a couple of the tappets at the cam-belt end have become a bit noisy, yet the car recently produced 124bhp at the wheels, with the only modifications being a high-lift inlet cam, and a vernier pulley. I wondered if there were any knowledgeable people out there that could tell me how best to assertain the conditon of the engine, and how soon a head rebuild will be likely?
Thank you for any response,
Ben Chapman. Read more
Surely it is a good idea to remove the dirt that can build up in engines? When i bought mine i removed the sump in case there was any accumulated "junk". Junk tends to build up in the sumps of this engine, as a fair amount of oil remains in the sump when the oil is drianed. I concluded that if any significant wear had taken place to the cams, followers etc, that the remains would accumulate here, and wreck my main bearings. Thankfully there was no junk.
I believe Mobil acknowledged that its oil could lead to premature failure 8 years ago, and subsequently changed the formula. How long ago did you experience problems?
Soon after i bought the car, i removed the rocker cover to investigate the condition of the cam chain, as HJ had mentioned these could wear. The chain appeared tight, but i replaced it anyway, along with a set of tappets. At the time i fitted a high-lift inlet camshaft. The tappets, 15k miles latter still make no noise when starting from cold. However, two at the cam-belt end occasionaly tick when hot, which makes me think they are faulty. If i get time i will replace them and see if that cures it. Earlier 16v engines are noisier than later ones due to the different shape of the teeth on the cam-chain sprocket. When i changed the inlet cam, i stuck in a 40k mile cam from a J reg 16v, this had the more rounded teeth.
One reason HJ's Jetta went better than mine when i bought it (thats if anyone is interested?) was because it was fitted with a 42mm inlet manifold. VW fitted 50mm intakes to 88' Model year cars onwards. These manifolds loose you 7 ft/lb of torque at peak. VW stuck to the 42mm for the mk.3 and Corrado. As a result i have stuck a 42mm manifold on my car. The manifold, intake cam, and a vernier pulley have increased mid-range torque from 119 ft/lb (which is standard for a 50mm car) to around 135ft/lb of torque (107bhp @wheels at 5k rpm). As a result the engine has a far better power curve, and i have lost no top-end power. Other than the pulley, i have profitted from changing the manifold and the cam. Cheap power. I think when the valve guides wear out, i will get the head ported by the wonderful David Baker if i can afford it. Then it might make some decent power.
I have cleaned the oil out of the metering head, and placed additional gauze in the breather pipe. I have seen no oil from the exhaust since then. I have thrashed the car for the past 1k miles and it appears to have used about 1/6 of a litre of Mobil 1, though i think a tiny amount may be leaking from one of the pipes to my Mocal oil cooler- is this excessive oil consumption from this engine?
Hj, the gearbox bearings didnt put me off your car- i could hardly hear them- it was the body work, lack of power steering, and the price you were asking for it at the time. I can do mechanical work reasonably, but i am useless with bodywork. The car i bought still has no rust other than a small amount around the scuttle gromit. When i bought it, it had recently had a new exhaust, alternator, raditor fan, two new tyres, a full service, and new engine mount. The car also had power steering and 256mm brakes. The interior was virtually brand new appart from the drivers seat.
The other cam type noise has turned out to be faulty water pump bearings. I had the water pump replaced about 2k miles ago, so i am not pleased. It makes the car sound like the small end-bearings are about to give up!!
"Don't try any fancy oils in your mota - stick with recommended semi-synthetic 10W40. Full synth can loosen the engine up and remove deposits leading to an oil burner - this could be your failing. A 13 year old VW engine does not warrant Mobil 1 or anything similar."
I cannot see any reason why synthetic oils are not reccomended for 13 year old VW enigines? I use Mobil 1 in the winter, and Valvolene 5W-50 in the summer. Synthetic oils last far longer than mineral oils, and protect the engine better. I know which i would rather have supporting my bearings at 7k rpm. The Mobil 1 will lubricate far better from cold, and when hot than a 10w-40 mineral base oil.

I purchased a Mazda 323 GT from Motorpoint, and have since suffered a broken lense on the offside front foglamp, my local Mazda dealer has quoted me approx £65 the first time I enquired and £205 the second time. Is there anybody out there that can direct me to a Bosch dealer to get a replacement at a resonable price Read more
Original Equipment Manufacturers like Bosch and Hella produce electrical equipment for car companies but do not necessarily have an aftermarket programme for them through motor factors. This means that you can only get them from dealers. However you could try a salvage breaker for late cars. Hope this might help.

Mark (Brazil) don't worry about posting lots of web links, at least it keeps Bogush quiet while he's reading them all.
Thinking about an SLK 320 for the girlie boss.
I've driven it, albeit briefly, and I like it a lot. She likes it also and thinks its top (spanish for cool) - mind you, she drives a 4-Runner and thinks thats top as well, so what does she know !
Anybody got one or had experience and got comments ?
In particular, is there anything about the RHD (which is what I will buy) that I wouldn't have noticed on LHD (the only ones I have had a good look at or drive of).
Especially given HJs comments about the "offset seating position". (see, I did read the site first).
Having said that, I am assuming that an LHD on British roads is a pain in the butt, but I've never driven a "wrong-sided" car in any country, so I wouldn't know for sure. Comments ?

I've already suggested to AST that he goes to a Motor Factor, ask if they can find out who makes the sunroofs for Land Rover, and source a replacement sunroof seal that way. Maybe another backroomer has a more direct answer as to who makes this pop-up sunroofs: probably Weathershields or Webasto.
