Today's Daily Torygraph has a report of court proceedings in which a man, caught on a police video taken in a police car was caught doing over 110mph in his Aston Martin. The traffic officer could not state positively that the accused had been at the wheel and the defence solicitor persuaded the court not to view the footage of the driver getting out of the car on the grounds that getting out of the car was not, in itself, an offence and that the film was therefore irrelevant. Amazing! Might be an interesting case to bear in mind! Read more
A letter in the latest CSMA Magazine Motoring & Leisure) comes from a man who claims that with careful checks of his fuel consumption he found himself spending £20 on unleaded to go one way on a journey and £27 on low sulphur to come back. Another claims a 20% increase in consumption on a 1.6 Daewoo. Anybody else experiencing similar consumption increases out there? Read more

Now he tells us!
I'll have to stop recycling all those old telegraph motoring sections OUT of the skip ;-)
1 I am amazed that local authorities can spend a fortune on speed reduction measures, to make things safer? for all users and then landscape 'grass super mini' roundabouts with massive lumps of granite with near vertical faces! Anybody hitting this veritable immovable object even at 25 mph will be lucky to walk away. A cyclist or motorcyclist will probably be dead!
2 I have often wondered why in our area on many sections of roads the lamp standards are frequently placed on only the outside of bends, in the natural impact point for anybody losing control, whereas placing on the inside would result in minimal damage. I have seen one standard that has certainly been replaced x2!
Is there a good (illumination) reason for this or is it just a job creation program? In which case, moving them all to the inner radius will create even more jobs......
can anybody make this to diesel lemons in 2? Read more

Has anyone heard of rear discs on Porsche 911 996 models getting so rusty they are u/s after a year and 10,000 miles. I've got a punter screaming blue murder about this and a copy of a Porsche TSB warning dealers to expect rusty rear discs, but not to replace then FOC under warranty. I strongly suspect the reason is that the anchors are designed to stop the car from 177mph and consequently don't self clean if all they have to do is stop it from city speeds. But is anyone any the wiser? (The GT2 was supposed to have ceramic discs which obviously couldn't rust.)

To Chris,
Yes, I did post it on the bulletin board at www.pelicanparts.com from the URL you kindly supplied in an earlier thread. Trouble is, how quick do American drivers drive their 996s? Maybe they are braked differently for the USA.

I look after a '96 Espace with air-con. Yesterday met the owner in a social situation who said it had just failed, blowing warm air she said. When asked if it would cost more than £30 to fix (sort of) I replied with the potential for huge bills on this. I'll just leave it broken was the reply, a very common one for a 5yr old car with air-con problems.
This is one particularly for Dave N, any likely causes of faults on this age of Espace? Any particular air-con firms in Cambs that would be good to look at this?
I have read the HJ faq on this and noted the advised contacts there.

going back to earlier a/c session & question of do you leave it on or off & how it drags the engine down, well us country bumpkins with a/c on todays ag tractors & a digital dash can tell you that the revs at idle will drop by 30-50 rpm & when hitched up to a dyno on the pto the a/c will consume approx 3hp at full revs.
backing up dave n, don't go for a regas- get it fixed by an independant specialist- or a good /recomended garage, theres lots of easy money & fools to seperate out there!
I have read in some of HJ's reviews that bad or "cheap" petrol can cause significant faults in engines. Which brands should be avoided and who supplies the major supermarkets? Read more

My alter ego has been exposed...
I have owned a royale for 4 years now it is a great car but is showing its age on a V plate 1979. I have looked after it and feel it a great shame as it will take to much time and money to get it through its next m o t which is in the middle of september so was hoping you can put me in contact with an owners club who may be able to use some of its parts the engine is on 98000miles and that is correct can give more detailes to anyone who is intrested. Do hope you can help john dont want to just scrap a great car thanks Andy Read more
As the Royale is a rebadged Opel Monza, perhaps the best bet is:-

If I did not have my beloved Celica Supra I'd like one of those myself, so I hope it may be saved, Andy!

My daughter has an 'M'reg Ford Escort, red colour. Last weekend I noticed a dull whitish bloom on the paint over the rear wing. I removed this with T Cut application then polished off with Mer.
What causes this and can I stop it?

In addition to the other suggestions you've had.....
Working on internet, web site, and e-business strategies is something I do. Including business plans, ROIs & CBAs of other lines. Especially convergence which is a big coming thing.
Dunno whether I'm good at it or not, but if I'm not, I get paid a lot for being bad.
If you want help, I'll help. (bearing in mind that sometimes the answer is "sorry, its not going to work").
And, contrary to everything I believe, no charge.
Here or e-mail me.
If you're already getting the right advice & support, don't worry, I shan't be offended.
Mark.
I have a barely used set of continental headlights for a Rover 200 Series 1989-96.
The original car was bought in Germany new in 1991 and imported into UK by me 2 months later when UK lights were fitted. The car has now been sold. The lights are in immaculate order. Any offer considered as I don't want to have to put them in the bin! Read more
Thank you all for your advice. I hope I took it all on board. The dealer's own check list had more items on it than mine so I think I've been pretty thorough.
I'm pleased to say that I haven't found any problems...long may that continue. I went over every centimetre of the paintwork, I was so paranoid. It rained for a bit on the trip back to the office, so I know the door seals are intact!
Out of interest, where would I have found an independent expert to have checked the car over for me? Without going round in circles, how would I know that he was an expert - and how much should I have expected to pay?
For those who are concerned about such things, the car is a BMW 318i estate (oops, sorry TOURING), the dealer is Snows in Portsmouth.
For the record when asked a few months back, HJ suggested going for something else instead - but that's the good thing about advice - you don't have to take it. (Fingers crossed I won't have to eat humble pie in the months to come!) Read more
No problems with the maths Rebecca, hated it at school though, real bully of a Maths master, used to hit you round the head with his gown, couple of overhand knots in the end, yikes did it sting! Wouldn't get away with that today.
I was guilty of assuming that nobody has private fuel these days unless they do mega miles of private motoring.
As for diesels and autos, you are quite right N/A on a 320d but it is an extra £1220 on a 330d which hikes up the Touring list price to £28765, which is just a bit shy of 2X what I paid for my first house. :-(
Personally I hope on my next car I can manage to get a diesel and an auto. There are a few cars where the addition of an auto box has been seen to be just what the manual diesel version wanted, eg Xantia XUD1.9TD, and IMHO the Rover75 2.0CDT, with the tourer auto being the one to have.
